The All Blacks take on Italy in the final game of the northern tour on Sunday morning - and it will be Wellington All Black TJ Perenara's last game in black.

What's his legacy in the team, and how big a winning margin will we see?

Also, its a rematch of last season's semi-final with the Wellington Phoenix taking on Melbourne Victory. What are we expecting?

To answer those questions, All Sport Breakfast host Adam Cooper and Weekend Sport host Jason Pine joined Nick Mills for the Friday Sport Kickoff.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk SEDB. It's the Friday Sport kickoff with
the glass Shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
It's the Friday Sport Kickoff. Joining us for Friday Sport
Kickoff is All Sports Breakfast host Adam Cooper and Weekend
Sports host Jason Pine.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Adam is stuck in the lift on his way up.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
He's taking his time on the lift, but he'll be
here before too much longer, so me and Piney will start.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Good Morning Jayson.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Hello there, Nick and our coeps are just coming back
from Phoenix Media. He went out there to get a
mic in front of Jim Caloer Taliano a short time ago,
so I'm looking forward to hearing about a bit of
teen news and things when he gets back. So I
won't be too far away.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
But for me and you talk about I mean, maybe
you won't remember him, but let's talk about an All
Black that I grew up with, and I can honestly
say to you Piney was one of my all time
favorite All Blacks. I mean, I think whenever I compare
halfbacks in the modern world, I compare it with him.
I still believe to this day he has the best
pass out of any All Black halfback. And that's bloody

(01:19):
high regard. It's only my opinion, but I loved him.
Chris Laidlaw was on as an IRB Hall of Famer.
Now I don't know, you probably don't remember him, but
you were as a sports for sonado as you are,
you would definitely have read about him.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
I have read about him. I did not get the
chance to see Chris laid Law play rugby. His last
Test was in nineteen seventy, which was the year I
was born, actually, so I didn't get the chance to
watch him play. I've seen footage of him, I've read
about him, listening to you talk about him in such
high regard, and man, there have been some good halfbacks
wear that Black jersey. But yeah, twenty Test matches, another

(01:53):
thirty seven All Black games, fifty seven times he wore
the All Blacks jersey, three of those as captain, and yeah,
just so highly regarded, versatile, accomplished. But on and off
the field we know he's gone on to be an
extremely who's a Rhodes scholar. Yeah, I mean jeepus. He
was at Oxford.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
University a Rhodes scholar. I mean, I mean that's what
I'm saying. You grow up with it all black. That's
your hero that he goes and becomes a Hodes scholar.
You got yourself? Are you for real?

Speaker 4 (02:22):
Yeah? Diplomat High Commissioner to Zimbabwe served on as the
Commonwealth Secretariat. He was the Race Relations Conciliator MP for
a while, chief executive of the World Wildlife Fund. Talk
about an overachiever.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
And you know what, Jase, You know we because of
the industry are were, and because I'm on the streets
and willing to we get to meet those people that
some people would say as the heroes. Every day of
the week you meet people, famous people. I meet famous
people without being a d head about it. You know,
I have never met Chris lade Law and it's one
of the people I cried when I met Brian Lahore.
I cried, you know, I didn't sober like a baby,

(03:00):
but I had tears of my eyes ride Law, and
I would be the same with Chris Sladelaw.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Yeah, I'm just going to say how it be in
his eighties bydn't now If.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Someone asked me this morning, I said he must be
in his eighties.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
In fact, I've got it right here. He's eighty one
right now. But yeah, like such an illustrious career and
almost in many ways, in many ways, the rugby was
almost secondary to everything else he achieved. But that shouldn't
take away from the fact that he was an extremely
good rugby player and I think rightly on it in
the IRBA or sorry, the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
I think he still has the best pass out of
any half back. His pass was just spot on and
older people that would have remembered and would have saved.
Now Coops has just joined us. Scoops, have you got
in to add to the Chris laid Law story that
we've been talking about.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
I mean, he's far away before you.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
Before my time, but I mean just amazing. Look at
his CV, look at everything is achieved through his life.
I mean, from from the top level of rugby to
know politician, counselor broadcaster. Incredible contribution to so many areas
of society.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, yeah, crazing great.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Right, let's move on to other things rugby and and Chris,
if you're listening around and we all think you're an
amazing person, and congratulations I suppose you're be on his
way to the presentation.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yeah, I think so. Yeah, yeah, because there's one of
those awards next couple of days.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
On Monday morning, our time, DJ Forbes getting the same nomination,
which is very well deserved too with his stint and Seven's.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Well said Coops all Black named the team for me,
which I thought was incredible when I heard it at
four point thirty this morning or five o'clock this morning.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
I thought to myself, well, they gone hard.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I thought they would run all the dirt trackers in
and they would just seed everyone a run.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
But they've gone hard.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
Good. Yeah, interesting, isn't It was quite a surprise seeing
all those big names when I woke up this morning
to check the team. That was an ouncestar overnight obviously
shows and I think Scott Robertson has acknowledged this in
some of his comments after naming the team, that this
team would look very differently this weekend if they won
last week. So this is a last throw of the

(04:58):
dice to say, right, we're going to finish this year
on a high because we did not get what we
wanted last week, which I think is fantastic. They want
to show that this team can gel with you know,
pretty much your your first string fifteen and white A
twenty three as per who's available. So yeah, great to
see a real star started team and most of the
main starters through. I think the only bit downside maybe

(05:20):
from a Wellington perspective, we're not going to see Rubin
Love Pierre, We're not going to see douopless Kidfi who
joined the camp and this game was probably ear marked off,
you know, for an opportunity for them to have a
chance to finish the year in the black jersey. But
great that we can see t J Pernada named for
I think we'll be Test eighty nine as very last
tests got that farewell here in Wellington during the during

(05:41):
the year. But so good that he can bow out
and tourin which would be great.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Oh that deep duplece thing upsets me now you just
mentioned I forgot.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah, I mean he hopefully his chance will come again.
But it felt like exactly what Coop said that he
was brought into the squad to cover injury. And yeah,
but for a you know, a couple more points last
week did if he could have been all black this
week not going to happen. Hopefully it still will. I
think Ruben love all we're that black jersey a lot
of times. But yeah, that's the only downside. Really, it's
a strong side. I've got to say a fear for Italy. Yeah,

(06:11):
I fear for them. They probably thought, as well, we
might get we might get a slightly easier I mean,
I don't think they'll ever suggest that they were going
to win the game. I mean, he could have put
out a second fifteen that'd still be deadily who aren't great?

Speaker 3 (06:23):
But I just.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Quickly ask you, because this will be the end of it.
We still I think we scored them last we scored
Scott Robinson last week. But I'm saying seven and a
half out of ten, and on a plasant on a
very positive note. I think he's the right guy, the
right age, the right everything about him is right.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
So I'm I'm seven and a half.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
If they had won on the week last weekend, it
would have been eight and a half, which is pretty
damn high.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
So what are you guys give them?

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Well?

Speaker 4 (06:49):
I think I mean, you know, I mean, Nick, I'm
I tend to be fairly positive. I think that's high.
I think what you've given is high. Yeah, I think,
you know, for the All Blacks, you know, the All
Blacks are going to finish the season with four defeats,
you know, four defeats from fourteen.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
That's you know, that's you.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Know, Ian Foster was was vilified for that sort of record.
And I know there's more to it than just the numbers.
We're actually you've.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Are you gonna give me?

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Come on, no, no, I'm gonna wait until we do
this officially on Sunday on weekend sport on news talking.
It's called Razors report Card. We're getting We're getting special
imaging done. We're getting special you know, I'm not gonna.
I'm not gonna. I'm gonna blow it all.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Now keep I suppose you're waiting to hold on to that.
All right, let's move on to somebody that you both
know a little bit more about than scor scoring.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
That scoring.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
I would have thought you would have had him. I
thought you would have had him about five and five or six.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
You know, me and you normally disagree on a lot
of things, you know, like but but we're on the
same track. We're on different tracks here. I think, looking forward,
I think it's just amazing.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Imagine if this was World Cup year and that was there.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
But it wasn't.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
It wasn't going to be when you get your report
card at school next to say he's going to be
good next year.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I didn't get anything but on my report card, so
I got he's going to be good next year on
my report card.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Phoenix. Let's talk about Phoenix.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
I don't like this idea of this idea and Pider
you're gonna love it playing Melbourn victory repeat of last
year's semi final. But they get them all in one
town and play the game. I mean, I mean, it's
it's an old basketball thing in it does it?

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Do they need to do it for football?

Speaker 4 (08:29):
I like it?

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Okay, I knew you would.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
Yeah, your night round. It's called all the men's teams,
all the women's teams are there the best. But about
this nick from a New Zealand point of view, is it?
On Sunday three thirty, just after we finish weekend sport
on News Talks there b which finishes at three rated
very highly very look a very very popular show with
with with the immediate family members of mine that listen.
We get Phoenix three thirty and then Auckland FC at

(08:53):
six I'm just going to absolutely couch it on Sunday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Oh yeah, someone's going to be looking after you with.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
Team news, team news from coachs Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
Unfortunately Sam Sutton defender friend All White picked up an
injury at training yesterday, so very unlikely that he's going
to travel. Almost a certainty he won't. And combined with
Tim Payne clicking up injury as well. Yeah, bit of
a tough tough seed tomorrow, tougher of defensive news for
the Phoenix. They are two key players from the season

(09:21):
so far pretty much ruled out of this game.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
They fly out tomorrow, play on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Yeah, they always do that one day. They go the
day before. Yeah, especially to the Eastern Seaboard.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
Basketball's fire out four days in advance.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Well, it's a lot more physical game. There's a lot
more money in the sport.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Thank you both very much. You can find out how
Jason Pine scores Scott Robinson on a Saturday afternoon on
his Scoreboard Sunday Someday on his Scoreboard show. And you
can find out how Adam Cooper scores the All Black
Coach on his show tomorrow morning.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
But I give it a give him a seven and
a half.
