Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk, said B getting u said, for your
sporting weekend, it's the Wellington Mornings Friday sport kickoff on
news Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Ed B getting in the vibe for Sunday. Hold on, guys,
(00:41):
I've just got the list of sports things here. Uh,
Liam Lawson, Hurricanes, Phoenix.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Saints.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Well we knew you bring them up next. No, no,
the topic here the producers getting fired. That's firing. First
game of the season fired, Well you're fired.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Good luck finding another one.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
But yes, Saints our home Sunday afternoon two o'clock can
be looking forward to the new season.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
I hope we thank you. But let's move on Friday.
Joining has for Friday sports check off as news Talk,
said B Weekend sports host Jason Pine, good morning, and
All Sports Breakfast hosts Adam Cooper, good morning. Come right,
I'm going to get fired. Now, don't worry about fire.
But but Lisa, I'm going to get fired. Promoting my
(01:29):
own is a huge weekend for Liam Lawson. Now I'm
really bought into this. I'm not a Formula one guy.
The most I know about Formula one is listening to
Mike Hosking in the mornings. Right, he's our resident, he
loves what he's our sport.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
He loves it.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
He loves it. Right, So that's all I know about it,
and I watched Drive to Survive? Is that what it's called.
I'm in love with Liam. I'm a fan, I'm absolute fan.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
I think what this is as an example of it
doesn't actually matter if you're a motor sport or a
Formula one fan at all. There's a key we doing
something that very raally happens. A full time drive for
Liam Lawson with red Ball alongside the full time defending
world champion Max for Stappan. This is rarefied air man.
This is right at the top of motors board. I
(02:12):
think we can all buy into it, just like you
don't have to be a basketball fan to understand what
Steven Adams is doing in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
This is bigger than Steve Adams. This is bigger than
Steve Adams.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
So that's an interesting point there.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
This is one guy.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
It's Formula one bigger than the NBA.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
I think it's equal, and it's one guy, one car,
one thing, not a member of a team.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
We're probably getting off track. But what we are all
looking forward to is seeing how he goes. But then
it's not just this weekend, COEPS, it's like a twenty
four events season.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, and go COEPS. Because I was just about to
say the guy the expert on early edition this morning said,
don't look at this weekend, look at the whole season.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
Well that's what he'd be judged on at the end
of the season, right, And you know, it's so easy,
especially in Formula One, to get really reactive. You know,
things don't go quite right, and then you know there
could be questions around Red Bull as a team. There's
been some chatter around today, you know, the constructors that
they have been over the last few years getting into
this season. There seems to be a bit of doubt
around there. But let's just let Liam Lawson go out
(03:09):
and do his thing for the first few rounds of
this season. He's got all the eyes on him, a
heck of a lot of pressure on him as he
has through the last set of phase of him, you know,
getting those test drives and slotting in as a fill in.
But Jesus tough and then when you got Max with
stuff and in the same team, colors. It's incredible, but.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
He's taken in his stride though good he's not even
affected by it.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
And he's become a star on the tour. He's become
a bit of a celebrity, you know, on the stage,
and I think a lot of people at this part
of the world, you know, you look at the motorsports
scene around New Zealand, there have been so many people
over the years that have got about halfway there, but
they've never quite got to this point where he's now
sort of pushing the ceiling in terms of what he's
capable of and what's been capable of for a New Zealander.
(03:53):
So it's absolutely incredible, pretty special to hear during the
week that interview about just how his parents have supported
him through because that's often the thing with motor racing
that you know, I'm few people from Wellington here over
the years who have been very promising, but they've just
never had the fun or the money to actually give
it a good crack, even if the talent was there.
So the sacrifice has been made by his family for
so long and here they are hopefully reaping rewards for
(04:15):
a very very long time.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
And I think just in case those listeners haven't heard
the parents sold their home. It wasn't like they were
a rich family and said we'll give you all the
money to do it. You sold the family home. You know.
That's the Crown Jewels, isn't it. Anyway, Let's move on
to the Hurricanes because I just don't understand. I don't
understand how badly. I mean, if you could think of
a worse start, you can't. There are eleventh piney. I mean,
(04:39):
what's wrong?
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yeah, it's a good question. I don't think we've got
time to unpack everything that's wrong. I think the performance
against more Ona Pacifica last weekend left a lot to
be desired, and they while they came back and shortened
up the scoreline near the end and actually threatened more
on A Pacifica late on, it wasn't a good performance
that off the back of the loss of the Blues,
which actually they played better. And I feel like tonight
against the Highlanders in Dunedin is getting as close to
(05:04):
must win as you can at the time of the season.
I mean, you don't win or lose Super Rugby in
March or sorry, you don't win Super Rugby in March,
but you can you can lose in your hopes of it.
So look, if they were to be one in five, sorry,
what would they be? One and one and four after
tonight against the Highlanders. Then they host the war Atas
next weekend, who are unbeaten. Let's not forget that.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Haven't played the Chiefs yet.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
No, correct, So look, they should they should win tonight.
They should win tonight. You know, they haven't lost the
Highlanders in five years. Highlanders though, fresh off of bye
Jamie Joseph and still in some real steal in that team.
A couple of wins so far in their three games
this season. It's a dollar eighty seven each on the tab.
(05:47):
They can't split it. I'm only saying they should win
because I'm a Hurricanes fan.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Probably see my gut's telling me Coops that they're not
gonna win. I'm sorry. I hate to say that, and
you know you know how big a fan I have
of them, But I think I can't see them winning.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
It's going to be a challenge.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
I think if last week was anything to go by,
and they've tried to reset, you know, through their defeat
so far this season, they came back to training this week.
They've only had six days to get ready for this one,
very minimal training, just one proper day to actually run
around on the park out there at Upper Hut and
try and you know, remediate what's gone on this season
so far. It hasn't been flashed that the forwards were
(06:24):
just getting absolutely beaten up up front during that Mawana
PACIFICA game. Reminds me of those Hurricanes teams of the
you know, the late nineties, early two thousands, where the
forward packs just really struggled despite a very promising back line.
But at the moment, the back line's not there either.
And yes they're missing a lot of players, particularly the
experience of Billy Proctor and what he brings to the
back line. Yeah, exactly. Jordie's gone as well. So when
(06:47):
you're missing those two players, I think it's really exposed
the youthful aspect of this back line, the slight experience
there they've got getting a bit lost. Even though I
think Harry Godfrey, for a young guy in his early twenties,
has made a great start, it just hasn't quite been
enough to bring this team through. So with Rubin Love back,
whether Soffroom or Entyre Lomax, both back off the bench
this week. I know they're not trying to say that
(07:09):
they'll be relying on them to get the job done,
but the impact that they will bring I think will
be absolute and absolute necessity for them to get the
job done. I was watching that game last week, and
I don't usually yell at the TV. I don't usually
get to involved, but I was just shaking my head
and yelling how explete its as to how frustrating it
was from a hurricane's perspective.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Yeah, I had to watch it online and I was
wandering around a restaurant. Look, oh, this is not real.
This is not for real, Piney Phoenix woman, I mean
the Phoenix men. Not shaking my head?
Speaker 4 (07:41):
Which you focus on the Phoenix was we said, the
team that's carrying the flag for that club at them.
So they're both playing Sydney you FC this weekend. Wellington
Phoenix now were just trying to get some credibility out
of their season, even Chief, he said after the coach
after the game last week, where you know we're not
in playoff contention anymore.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Can I just quickly ask you about Chief? You do
you think his position might be under the spotlight?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Absolutely?
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Do you think that. Yes, they loved them last year.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Absolutely, but you know, professional swarts all about results, so
you think you'll be looking at well, well, the thing
is this contracts up, so they will certainly be think
the discussion. It's a different question. If you're asking me
whether you think whether I think he will stay or not,
that's a different question.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
I was just asked about absolute.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Well, look if he, if he'd been negotiating this time
last year, had a five year contract.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Pops.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah, but that's how quickly things can change. The Mariners
who won it last year are only one spot above
the Phoenix. That a league changes so quickly. The women's
there are one point outside the top six with five
games to go. Three of those games are at home.
They always play well at home. They've never made the
top six six. It's a small sample size, I know,
only four seasons, but I think this is a Phoenix
(08:45):
side that can make the playoffs of the A League
Women's Sydney FC tomorrow night, who are bottom of the
women's ladder, so win that back home for three of
their last four games. I think they're a really good
shot of making the.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Play How exciting is that?
Speaker 4 (08:57):
I mean, that is exciting to watch too, and a
park and a potty to a part, great venue.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
They're great to watch. They're get behind the Wellington Phoenix.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah yeah, Coops, Yes.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Chatting to a few of the Phoenix women and that
come from behind when they had a pottydoer last week.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
I think it's raally spurred them on.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
They were in a bit of a lull, that had
a great start to the season, then they had four
or five games without a win, and I think it was,
you know, it was starting to get do or die
and are we going to propel forwards or sort of
falter and fall backwards a bit. But you could see
the spring of the steps of a couple of the
players that I spoke to about there yesterday, and they're really,
you know, feeling that they are the ones flying the
Phoenix flag at the moment now, are the ones that
(09:32):
need some for this club, absolutely, and I think they
the club needs it right, The club needs them to
do well to sort of save face from what's been
a fall from grace for the men's team in the
space of twelve months. So yeah, really looking forward to
seeing them back home at Potty do over the next
few weeks and hopefully getting some good support through the
through the turnstiles there at Potty Do.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
I agree, get out and support them and let's hope
they made the playoffs. Just quickly. Back on the men's team,
what happens that needs to happen really quickly to both
of you between now and the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
For chiefly to keep his job, they've got to show
some heart. Results would help.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
They have to and he has to show that there
was a plan moving forward because a lot of those
guys are still on contract next year. So really they
you know, they wouldn't want to lose to any more games.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
Yeah, play for results. I mean, I think the biggest
fan great with them this year has been the staying
back that not you know, its just you know, being
a savior rather than trying to trying to win games.
So I think fans rarely just want to see some
some excitement, some you know, opportunities created and opportunities capitalized
on an executor to see some goals. See this team
show what you know we saw from them with a
(10:39):
largely different squad last year, but with enough of the
foundations there to do it at least for these last
few games.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Yeah, give it a crack.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Any any sport on Sunday in mornington, Do you know
is anything going on Sunday afternoon on.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
I think the Saints are playing is that this new
Indian Panthers, So.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
They're not played there, they're not playing them.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
The don't start me that would have been a nice
easy win for you.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Don't start me on that.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Do not start me on that, please, two o'clock on
Sunday afternoon at TSB Arena against the Taranaky Years.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Two o'clock start. What a great time for families.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Get there, get there, get there, oh Ethan, just sit
up the nikey oh god go, Thank you very much
Jason Pine and Adam Cooper.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
