news Talks. Ed B.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Joining us for the Friday Sports Kickoff is All Sports
Breakfast host Adam Cooper, Morning Coops, Money, Nick and weekend
sports hosts Jason Pine twelve till three Saturday and Sunday.
I want to start good morning, by the.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Way, Good Morning.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
That's rude of me, wasn't it?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Not at all?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I'm over the moon with Grant Ryan. Grant Fox, Yeah,
the Sun Ryan Fox, incredible story. Piney, I'm going to
start with you on this. Not only did he win
his first major, but he's now leading after day one?
Is he still leading them on? Mister Bunk, He's.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Well, he's in a typher third. So there are two
players at five under and Ryan Fox is in a
group of players at four unders, so effectively tied for
third in a tournament that he had no idea really
he was going to be playing it. The only way
he makes it to the PGA Championship is by winning
last weekend at Myrtle Beach, which he did. He was

(01:25):
all set to have a weekend off, and here he
is in the in the year's second major, and after
the first round he's tied for third and at.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
One stage he was leading. It was when I came
in to start the show, he was leading it. So
it's pretty amazing.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Keeps.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
The story that I loved most was him arriving. Did
you see the story about him arriving to the tournament
and Rory McElroy saw him across the car park, put
whatever he had down and walked across to him and
gave him a big hug. He said, I got the
second greatest player of all times, you know, after Tiger
Woods stopped and gave him a hug and congratulated of

(02:00):
a winning myrtlet very special.

Speaker 5 (02:03):
I think he's you know, Ryan Fox seen that he's
that person guy that seems to get along with most
people on tour. And when you hear him chat, you
see the interactions he has with his caddy, with you know,
his his entourage, his family when they're there like they
have been in the past week, you can understand why
he's just a very easy going, you know, laid back
kind of guy that's just sort of loving what he's doing.

(02:24):
And this is all the more special as well because
it has not been easy for him since he's made
this step up to the PGA Tour. You know, he
was He's been pretty honest about this. He was pretty
lost at times through you know, through the first you know,
six to twelve months of being on the PGA Tour.
It was a huge step up from the DP World Tour.
Some of those parts of the United States are a

(02:45):
lot more foreign than some of the more sort of
central parts of Europe and other places where the European
Tour goes. So it has been a challenging road. And
you know, he's been on this tour for a week
while now, and you know, it hugely significant that finally
he was able to get that first win last weekend
and set himself up for the Major. And you know,
it'd be easy to look back in a year's time
and remember that, but I think you have to, you know,

(03:05):
look at it as a collective the several years build
up to this moment and he's finally reaping the rewards heidy.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Do you know how long is that season go for?
How long is he in the State's touring?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
It's pretty much a calendar year. The PGA Tour is
pretty much a calendar year. But you obviously can't go
in and out. You can't possibly go to all the tournaments,
which is why the win at Myrtle Beach is such
a big thing because it gets him a two year exemption,
which means he can now pick and choose the events
that he goes to. So what you do is, straight away,
you look at the you look at the year, and
you say, right, where are the tournaments that have the

(03:35):
most prize money? And then you say, right, I'm going
to go to those twelve let's say, then you put
those on your calendar and then say, okay, I'll go
to that one. I don't have to go all the
way over there for that one. I'll go to this
one and this one. He doesn't have to qualify for
any of these tournaments. Basically, the two year exemption. Yes,
the prize money's nice, obviously there is, Yes, the entry
into the PGR Championship terrific, But it's the two year

(03:56):
exemption which is the big thing for Ryan Fox. As
Coop said, it's been hasn't been a straight line for
Ryan Fox, and now he's going to get the opportunity
over the next two years to just have a bit
more freedom about where.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
He goes and to think only what we're in May
now to thinking about October last year, he was genuinely
weighing up whether to carry on on the PGA tour
and go back to the DP will to that was
a real you know.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Do you reckon the troops that they actually pick and
choose to see who's attending? What's too? So say, for instance,
the one in Alabama's worth two point eight million dollars,
but you know Rory's there and everyone else is there.
But I could go to North Carolina and I don't
even know who those names are that are coming up there,
and it's eight hundred thousand. Do you reckon they'd choose,
pick and choose, and do it like that just so

(04:41):
they can.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Well, I think the ones that with the most prize
money probably attract the better players. So I think that's
probably the two things probably follow one another, that the
ones with the most prize money are the ones with
the better players, and he gets to go to all
of the ones he wants to.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Right, Oh Gosh's good luck. Absolutely, I mean that's unbelievable.
I mean, you would have talked to him a few times.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Where I have. I've never met the guy, but Chris
iss dead right. I feel like if he came into
our for some sat down, you could just start yearning
away to Ryan Fox. He is such, He's just a
he's just a KEYWI guy, just like us.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Well, I had a lot to do with Grunt well
a little bit to do with Grunt Fox for a
for a short period of time. I had a lot
to do with them. And I'll tell you what. As
famous as he was, he was that guy next door. Absolutely,
so obviously the apple doesn't fall from far from there.

Speaker 5 (05:27):
And he's obviously got a very forgiving life because she
let him go out and celebrate with red wine on
Monday night, even after the family had had come out
and gone all the way over to visit it.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
I love the fact that he said he's going to
drive to the next to the major with a hangover.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
That thing.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
He brings it down to a level week and understand right,
I mean, it's like it's like your hacker gets a
hole in one, you know, on you know, and so
shouts the bar and gets absolutely hammered, has to go
to work the next day.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
That's Ryan Fox.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
I'll hopefully I'll just get there without a hag over,
because I've got to drive with a hag over. Let's
talk about the Hurricane siland now I said to your
Pioney on Monday morning when I was young, a bit younger,
Hurricans Highlanders was the biggest game of super rugby in Wellington.
I mean because all the university students that had been
to Otago over many years were still Otago supporters. They'd

(06:18):
all turn up. It was a big event. Something is
missing with the Highlanders. This isn't going to be the
greatest game, you know, attendance wise, it's not going to
be twenty thousand.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Why well, I think for starters, the Islanders have just
been extremely disappointed and nothing the Hurricanes can do about that. Look,
I think the Hurricanes go out there tonight and just
try and do what they did to the Chiefs last
time and the Warritars a little bit earlier the season
and and just win and win.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Well.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
The Highlanders I've been really disappointed because Jamie Joseph has
gone into that head coaching role having been the director
of rugby last year. With Clark Dermody taking the reins.
They've said, okay, Jamie, you belong in a head coaching
role on the grass rather than strategizing in an office somewhere,
you know, in Forsyth Bar.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
But he's coming.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
And they started well. They beat the Blues, they beat
one of PACIFICA, so they were two from three in
the first three weeks. Now they won't the six and
it's yes, you look at the cattle that he's got.
And it's always hard to attract the better players to
Highlander's land. It's always been the case. But Jamie Joseph
is a very good rugby coach and he just hasn't
been able to get a tune out of this team
this year.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
All right, let's center on on the Hurricanes, because you know,
we said, we all combined said that they were going
to beat the Chiefs last time we talked, and they
did a couple of weeks ago. They're peaking at the
right time. Tomorrow tonight should be reasonably easy.

Speaker 5 (07:34):
You know, hope so, and I think they need it.
They need a good twenty point win to carry on,
you know where they left off before the bye week.
You know, obviously it's going to be interesting. It's been
a year plagued by injuries, but now a lot of
these players are coming back. Brett Cameron and you've got
to give credit to him, you know, two months early
from his estimated time frame from that ACL surgery from
last year. Absolutely incredible. And must say, almost every Hurricanes

(07:57):
training that I've been to this year, he was there.
He was running around a lot earlier than anyone expected.
He was staying involved and you could he was doing
some goalkicking practice earlier on in the season while still
sidelined with this injury. So you know, he's thoroughly deserved
this shot to be back while it's happened, and I
can't wait to see, you know how long he might
be able to get on for tonight. So it's going

(08:18):
to be really interesting. Though I would stay packing Ruben
Love though at ten you've got to stick with your incumbent.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Just before we move on, I want to get to
something else. But do you know what the tab odds
are for this game tonight? The Hurricanes are paying a
dollar six the Highlanders are eight dollars. Well, and you
talk about what it used to be like, you never
used to know right between these two teams.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Carlas haven't won here since twenty fifteen, I think the
year they won the Super Rugby here well, so.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Quickly I really want to quickly because I want to
mention the Saints and Jets on Saturday night because it'd
be the last chance to see probably Corey Webster playing
in Wellington, which would be something. But I really want
to also talk about Aukland FC because they have been
the success story of sport in New Zealand. I mean
for the last five or ten years, it's been a great,
great thing. Are they celebrating too soon?

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Piny No, I don't think so. I think they celebrated
the Premier's Play. The regular season went absolutely then they
got their feedback on the ground. They're ready for another celebration.
I think if they can get past Melbourne victory home
and away and then the Grand Final. Look, I love
the way Auckland FC have gone about things this year.
I think they've set the standard in many areas and
looking forward to these two legs Tomorrow night and then
next Saturday out at go Media.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
That's set the standard for any kind of business, sport, anything.
They've set the standards, haven't they keeps Yep, they have.

Speaker 5 (09:27):
They've stolen the show, you know, and then they've really
made their presence felt and I think they are getting
support right across the country, including here in Wellington. I
mean it's hard not to enjoy what they're doing, and
even diehard Phoenix fans if they take that allegiance away
slightly and just remove yourself one step, you've got to
look at what, you know, what benefits this is doing

(09:48):
for football in this country. It's it's really impressive, but
I really hope they go the whole way.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Now I've got to go quickly. Can I just tell
you what are you who?

Speaker 3 (09:54):
You're picking Auckland and for the football?

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yes, Auckland and we're all Hurricanes.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Hurricanes on the Hurricane and Ryan Fox and Ryde Fox
sit Appreciate It All Sports Breakfast host Adam Cooper and
weekend sports host Jason Pye.
