News Talk fourteen thirty KASI proudly presentsAmes High Softball, brought to you by
Northwest Bank, Freedom Tire, Ceand K Heating and Cooling and Mormon Clothiers.
Let's go live to the Diamond withKASI Sports Director Dave Sprow. Good
evening, Welcome to the Ames HighSoftball Diamond as a Little Cyclones play host
to Mason City tonight, a doubleheaderbetween two teams out of the North Division
(00:29):
of the Iowa Alliance Conference. Amesis nine and five overall this season,
winners of eight of the of itslast ten games, and the Little Cyclones
four and oh in a division playso far this season for Mason City of
three and six overall record, twoand four mark against division foes on the
(00:50):
year. Sydney Smalley will get thestart for Ames. The sophomore It takes
a five and two record to therubber and it'll be junior Addie Evans on
the pitching rubber for Mason City. She has one and five on the year.
Ames will be without one of theirtop hitters, Ireland Bus down with
an injury. She's missed basically thelast week with a thumb injury. We'll
(01:11):
hear more about that, as wellas a preview of tonight's matchup as we
visit with Aames High head coach Meganvon Barren in our pregame interview that's coming
up next. This is a littlecyclone Softball a News Talk fourteen thirty KSI
welcome back Names High Softball pregame show. We're visiting with head coach Megan von
(01:32):
Baron. Coach got the win atDowning the other night. What were some
of the keys to come out ofthat three nothing winners? Yeah, Sid
did a great job pitching on themound. She only walked too, so
that's been a big focus for usto cut down on those walks. And
we hit the ball well. Wescored some runners you know, on base
and we hit a lot of ballsto the players, but we also got
(01:53):
some through. So we're hitting theball well. We just have to find
more gaps than right to them, but hitting them hard and they're hitting them
deep. So how does that outingfor smally compared to how she's performed the
rest of the season. It wasprobably her best one so far. For
sure. We put a little pressureon both her and Josie, like we've
got to cut down on those walksand they did a good job. They've
(02:15):
done a good job there and Sidyou know, was able to go the
distance and get that shut out,So that was a big win and really
good job of her for her tryingto cut back on the walks. Is
that as much a mental thing there'smaybe something you can tweak in terms of
their mechanics as well. I thinkit's a little bit of more mental and
just being ready to go from theget go. And so we've been talking
about that and focusing on that andyour center field or Ireland Bus has been
(02:42):
out of the lineup for a fewweeks. Now, what's her status and
how do you adjust, you know, with the lineup and the defense without
her out there. Yeah, thatwas a tough one for us to lose
her here these games and she's stillher status is unknown. We're hoping to
still get her back here yet thisseason. So um, you know,
we just do the best we can. And Nora has stepped up really well
in center field. She made agreat catch to end our game at Marshalltown
(03:05):
and she's done a good job there. So yeah, I mean, Ireland's
still in the dugout, so westill have our leadership, and she's still
got a great attitude and so that'sthat's really helpful. And so we're just
taking every game at a time anddoing our best. And we've got three
great outfielders out there now, andwe knew that we were going to have
four great outfielders to start the season, and so just you know, doing
(03:25):
what they can, stepping up anddoing a great job. And you're mentioning
her leadership in the dugout, whatdoes she added to the team at least
in terms of that respect. Well, she does a great job of keeping
her head up and keep cheering theteam on and really trying to bring them
up. I mean, her voiceis the one that I hear all the
time telling the kids, you knowwhat, like let's go and you know,
okay, shake that one off andthings like that. So she does
(03:46):
a good job of just trying tokeep the attitudes up and the you know,
the morale up, and the offenseis keupped up in large part thanks
to Ellie Lynch, who was oneof the best some of the best numbers
in the state and obviously leading theteam a lot of categories. Is that
pretty much everything you could expect outa player like that in her senior year.
Oh yeah, absolutely. I meanwe definitely expected Ellie to hit the
ball well. So she's done agreat job and we get her on base
(04:10):
and we're likely to score. Sohow does that kind of feed the rest
of the lineup When she's able toset the table like absolutely, it sets
the tone and she knows it.So if she if she doesn't get on,
she's disappointed with herself for sure, because she wants to do that.
But the team knows too that it'snot one player. They all have to
do their jobs. So but itdefinitely helps when Ellie gets on and starts
it off and she gets running aroundthe bases. She's fun to watch and
(04:31):
fun to get her in to score. Let's take a look at Mason City.
What's your scouting report on the Riverhawks. Yeah, well, we've played
them a lot, you know, and so it's not going to be easy,
and that's what we talk about. So they can beat anyone. They
have split some games and so youknow, there we just have to come
out and play our game and playtough and just go out there to beat
(04:54):
the team and not just show upto win. How do you want your
pictures to kind of attack their picturesthey're hitting. Yeah, we got to
hit our spots and um, wegot to just make sure that everything we
throw is working. So um,same thing. Just eliminate those walks.
I mean, if we if wecan keep girls off base, it makes
a huge difference with our game andputs a lot less pressure on the pitchers.
(05:14):
Then we can go and score someruns and then that helps them too.
Coach, thanks for your time, best of luck tonight against Mason City.
Thank you as head coach, Megavon baron joining us on the pregame
show. This is Little Cyclone Softballon Newstalk fourteen thirty KSI Aims and Amazon
City getting ready for a doubleheader hereat the twenty fourth Street Athletic Conference Complex.
(05:36):
Part of me as we past long, just a few more details on
Arland Buss, the aim center fielder. It was actually about a week ago
that she injured her thumb, andshe is slated to have surgery tomorrow,
but it's not until after that they'llknow for sure how long exactly she'll be
out and whether she'll be able toreturn to the diamond this season. Although
(05:58):
I've heard rumblings there's a chance shecould maybe pinch run or something along those
lines for Ames, but we'll seeif it works out in that way.
So that's a big adjustment for thelittle Cyclones for the remainder of the season.
Let's take a look at the startinglineups. First, for the Mason
City Riverhawks, Brogan Evans the shortstopto lead it off. Gwyneth Fiser is
(06:19):
batting second. She's the third baseman. The pitcher is Addie Evans. She's
in the three spot. The cleanupbatter is the catcher, Aubrey Graven.
Hayley Shinn is at second base andbatting fifth. Batting sixth is Reggie Spots.
The center fielder. Left fielder GraceBirding will batt seventh. Batting eighth
is he designated player Dalen Gensler. She'll hit for the right fielder, Kylie
(06:40):
Johnson. And rounding out the MasonCity lineup is Kelsey mcdonnah The first baseman
batting ninth Brogan Evans, Gwyneth Fiser, Eddie Evans, Aubrey Gravin, Hayley
Shinn, Reggie Spots, Race Birding, Dalen Gensler, and Kelsey mcdonnaugh.
The batting order for the visiting Riverhawks. Ames will have Ellie Lynch leading off.
She's the shortstop, right fielder KayleeMasker batting second. In the three
(07:00):
slot, it's Maya Geffrey the firstbaseman, center fielder Norah Morkan hitting cleanup.
Batting fifth is the catcher Kira Anderson. Mia Vogel is the designated player
for Ames. She'll hit for thepitcher Sydney Smalley. Third baseman Katie Rieselman
is at batting seventh. Batting eighthis Josie Tiland. She's at second base
and running out. The games lineup is the left fielder Alie Franson,
(07:20):
Ellie Lynch, Kaylee Masker, MayaGeffrey, Norah Morkan, Kira Anderson,
Mia Vogel, Katie Rieselman, JosieTiland, Alie Fransen. The lineup for
Aims start. Starting pitcher for theLittle Cyclones is sophomore Sydney Smalley. She's
making her ninth pitching appearance of theseason and her eighth start of the year.
(07:43):
Smolly has a five and two recordwith a three point five nine R
eight and thirty seven innings pitch thisseason. Point it's batting average of two
eighty four Smolly has logged forty twohits, twenty nine runs, nineteen of
those earned. She has walked twentyone batters, has not hit a batter,
and has struck out twenty eight opposingbatters whip one point seven oh that's
(08:07):
walks plus hits divided by innings pitched. Baddy Evans, the starter for Mason
City, is making her ninth pitchingappearance of the season and her seventh start.
She has a one win and fiveloss record with a four point four
nine ERA in thirty nine innings pitchedthis year. Opponent's batting average of two
(08:28):
ninety five, fifty one hits allowed, forty runs, twenty five earned,
fourteen walks, one hit batter, and twenty nine strikeouts for the Junior.
Evans, the starter for Mason City, aims coming off the win on Tuesday
at Dowling, a three nothing LittleCyclones victory, and Aims in that game,
(08:52):
interestingly, only drew one walk onlyhe struck out once at the plate,
but don't it'll get three run across. Kaylee Musker had a two hit
night, Norah Morkan and Mia Vogelwith RBIs and that one. It was
Kyra Anderson who recorded the only walkof the game for the Little Cyclones and
Smalley, who starting game one tonight, was the winning pitcher on a Tuesday,
(09:15):
defeating Dowling and holding the Maroons tothat four hits and two walks allowed,
didn't allow a run, of course, struck out one batter on her
way to the victory in that one. Evans last pitch on Tuesday, as
Mason City lost to Newman Catholic ofMason City eight to three, was the
(09:41):
final in that one, and Evanswent six innings, allowing seven hits eight
runs, four of those were earned. She walked four batters and struck out
three, taking the loss in thatgame. Burning had a three hit night
for the river Hawks, all anglesa couple hits for broken Evans. She
(10:01):
had actually two doubles and an RBI. Addie Evans and Aubrey Robin also with
run scoring hits for the river Hawksin that win over the Newman Knights.
Mason City Newman consistently highling ranked teamand the contender for state tournaments, so
(10:24):
it's a tough challenge for the riverHawks in that one. Speaking of rankings,
by the way, names has droppedout of the rankings Little Cyclones.
We're fourteenth last week after being rankedeleventh to start the season, but Aames
now out of the top fifteen inClass five A. Ankeny Centennial is the
(10:46):
new number one. They jumped upfrom the seventh ranking last week to take
over at the top of the fiveA rankings according to the IBA Girls High
School Athletic Union, and the Jaguarscarrying a ten and one record vaulting them
to the top of the rankings. Will go over those rankings a little more
(11:07):
detail as tonight's game moves along.I want to give your heads up as
the two teams are being introduced hereat the Eamesize Softball Diamond. This will
be the last home game for Amesfor a couple of weeks, and the
next home matchup for the Little Cycloneswill come on the twenty second of June
when they host a double header withMarshalltown. Tomorrow, AIMES goes to Pleasant
(11:31):
Valley. They'll play both Pleasant Valleyand see the Rapids Kennedy and then road
double header at Fort Dodge next Monday. Next Wednesday, they visit De moin
Roosevelt for Twin Bin Twin Bill Partof Me and then on Thursday, of
next week, two games at SoutheastFolk, and then it's next weekend the
(11:52):
Dodger Invite up at the Harlan RogersSports Complex in Fort Dodge. The Dodgers
will be part of that event, but not every team plays every other team
in that game. A lot ofteams are involved in that event, which
has held both Friday and the Saturdayof next week. Names also as road
trips to Waterloo East and Johnston onthe docket before they return home to host
(12:16):
Marshalltown on the twenty second of June. Ames Eye baseball team also has a
bunch of road trips lined up inthe next couple of weeks, so we
won't be over there again until thirteendays from now if memory serves, and
then we'll be over here once againfor softball a couple of weeks from tonight,
(12:39):
so hopefully a couple of enjoyable gamesbetween these division rivals as Ames and
Mason City Area getting set to goat it. The visiting river Hawks are
wearing white jerseys with red numbers andlettering Mason City across the front, with
a small number below that and alarge number and red on the back of
the years. They red pants aspart of their look tonight. The Little
(13:03):
Cyclones in all a black and theyhave the black uniforms, black numbers and
lettering outlined in white and white trimwith the uniforms as well. Beautiful knight
for softball. Two games coming upbetween Ames and Mason City and a divisional
matchup stick with us. First pitchis on the way next. This is
Little Cyclone Softball on Newstalk fourteen thirtyKasi. The guys fotball team on the
(13:28):
diamond here getting in their final warmup, says the host Mason City for
a double header. Dave sprout withyou here as the Little Cyclones starting pitcher
Sydney Smalley warms up. For catcheris Kyra Anderson. Maya Geffrey holding out
first base for the Little Cyclones JosieThailand at second and Katie Reeselman is at
(13:50):
third. The shortstop is Ellie Lynch, Ali Franson and left field Nor Morkan
in center and the Kaylee Mesker isthe right fielder for a Little Cyclones.
A lot of action here tonight. They're just getting underway over at the baseball
Diamond. Ames and Mason City alsogoing at it a divisional double header over
there as well when admission gets youinto both if you're looking to stop by,
(14:11):
and you'll have some nice weather forits seventy five degrees as we are
set to get things underway, sunshineand wins are out of the south.
Generally speaking, about five to tenmiles an hour probably won't affect the ball
in flight too much, although seemight a well timed gus might be a
little extra oof for well struck ball. This evening, first pitch, swinging,
(14:37):
Brogan Evans falls into the bleachers andwe are underway here on a Thursday
evening. Evans, a freshman witha three seventy five average, four forty
four on base percentage and a fivethirty one slugging percentage. She smacks one
in a center driving Morgan back reachesup. It's off for glove and we'll
(15:00):
go to the fence around first intosecond. Evans with the two bagger to
open up the ball game. Thatwas well hit and Morgan tracking it all
the way back pedaling trying to keepRyan the ball and leapt up at the
last second the ball just in andout of her glove. She couldn't quite
squeeze that one, and it's adouble for Evans, which is her fourth
of the season, and that's ateam high for the Riverhawks. Now,
(15:24):
Gwyneth Visor, the batter she showsbunt, puts it down and it's smally
charging at the pitcher will throw thefirst throw across the diamond and out at
third is Brogan Evans and she isdismayed, as is her coach, Alicia
Kimball over there in the third basecoaching box, and now the field umpire
(15:46):
is going to ask the home plateumpire if he saw anything different, and
he says no, so the outwill be recorded at third. Visor's sacrifice
attempts unsuccessful, as it was JosieIsland over there at first who made the
throw across the diamond. She wascovering the first base bag, got the
(16:08):
force there and then threw across toget the out at third. Ball one
to Addie Evans, the starting pitcherfor Mason City. She steps in with
nobody on and two outs in thefirst and she takes high from Smalley two
(16:29):
and oh. Evans a five sixteenaverage, five fifty nine on base percentage
eight to seventy one slugging percentage leadsthe river Hawks in all three of those
categories the two oo, swung onand filed straight back. Evans also leads
Mason City and hits with sixteen homeruns with three in RBIs with sixteen.
(16:55):
He's got a couple of doubles mixedin there too. She was just walked
once. She's been hit by apitch twice. Mason has struck out just
three times this season. To onefrom Smalley is low three balls and strike
too, Eddie Evans with Aubrey Grovin, they'll cleanup. Batter on deck the
(17:18):
pitch it's high. I thought thatwas ball for it's actually ball three,
so the count is full to Evans. Smalley, trying to end the inning
right here, delivers called strike three, hit the outside part of the plates
and sends Evans back to the bench. Mason Citia does not score despite the
(17:42):
leadoff double in the top of thefirst after happening river Hawks zero Little Cyclones
coming up. This is Eames highestsoftball in new Stalk fourteen thirty Kasi I
think at the bottom of the firstnotes and runs from Mason City in the
top half, so Little Cyclones willhave the top of the order. Of
course, do up here with EllieLynch to start off, Kayley Mesker and
(18:03):
Maya Geffrey to follow, facing theright hander Addie Evans. Aubrey Grovin is
her catcher. Kelsey mcduonne at firstbase for the river Hawks, Hayley Shin
at second, when Fiser, thethird baseman, Rogan Evans a short stop
get to the rest of the defensivealignment as Lynch digs in right handed batter
(18:25):
ready to go. The pitch isjust past Fiser at third, down the
line and into short left. Lyncha big turnaround first, watching to make
sure that ball gets back to theinfield safely. She'll hold there with a
single and Lynch leads a little cyclonesand on base percentage and slugging percentage top
ten and Class five A in bothcategories, adding another hit to her total,
(18:47):
and he gets the lead off batteron now Kaylee Mesker stepping in left
handed batter to face Evans, andthe pitches off the glove of Grave Grovin.
Pardon me, was high. Grominhad to come out of her stands
to get to that ball and triedto squeeze it, but it just got
away and Lynch, we'll head downto second and just like that aims as
a runner in scoring position around theoutfield four Mason City, Grace Birding is
(19:08):
and left Reggie spots and center KylieJohnson is the right fielder, and the
pitch to Mescer a little low forball two Mesker, there's a five fourteen
average leads a Little Cyclones in thatcategory five ninety one on base percentage behind
(19:32):
forty one slugging percentage, and takesa strike correction on the On the count,
it's one ball and two strikes toMesker. As Lynch stands on second,
no ounce frames in a scoreless game, Evans looking into the dugout to
(19:55):
get the signs to what pitched tothrow. Here's a fly in the left
center field center field spots left fieldor burning and converging, but they can't
get to it and around a thirdand scoring Lynch. The throw gets away
and Masker's gonna end up on third. Credit her with a double and an
RBI to get aims on the board. Then an errand throw from the outfield
moves a Masker up to third basewith no outs, The Little Cyclones grabbed
(20:18):
the first lead of the game,Masker picking up her thirteenth RBI of the
season, and my Geoffrey the batter, the eighth grader three ninety four average,
four five on base percentage, foureighty five slugging percentage and a strike
(20:44):
to Geoffrey knee high right down themiddle plate, throw the third masker back
easily. She was just standing thereeven as robbing pumped. Fake a throw
and then turn until a throw actuallycame. One strike count to Geoffrey,
(21:06):
swings and missus for strike two.Jeffrey has thirteen hits and thirty three at
bats, including a double and atriple nine RBIs, a couple of walks
and one strikeout. Right handed batterdigs In, stands pretty much in the
middle of the batter's box. Evansdelivers. It's hit in the air short
(21:30):
right field. Actually, it's gonnastay on the endfield. The second baseman
shin maybe a step off the grass. They're still on the endfield to make
the catch for the first out ofthe game's half of the first Meska remains
at third base, with Norah Morganstepping in, marking a sophomore four or
(21:52):
six average, four twenty four onbase percentage six fifty six slugging percentage,
and she followed off first pitchy seasfrom Evans Market has thirteen hits and thirty
two of bats, including a teamhigh three doubles you know so as a
triple and a homer. Twelve RBIs, one walk, two strikeouts. One
(22:18):
delivery from Evans is in the dirt, knocked down nicely by Gravin and skinning
Mesker, almost daring the catcher tothrow down to third. Boll goes back
to the picture instead. It's oneand one to Marken one nothing games leading
Mason City bottom the first and oneaway. There's a fly foul back behind
(22:38):
home plate, over our heads andout of play. One ball, two
strikes torn a bit of a gapin right center Kylie Johnson, the right
fielders playing towards the line. It'sway high over the head of the ketcher
Grovin. Here comes the Massaker tryingto score. The throw off the glove
(23:00):
of the pitcher. Evans and Messkerscore standing up on a wild pitch that
was so high. Gromin really hadno chance to get a glove on that
one. And I hope was forthat ball to bounce back enough keep Mesker
from scoring. But she'll come inon the wild pitch and make it a
two nothing Little Cyclones lead. Nowthe base is empty with one down in
(23:22):
the first two balls, two strikesto Morgan and she takes strike three on
the inside corner. Turned away fromthat one thought it was inside, but
she goes down looking for a strikeout for Evans. Two outs in the
inning. Tyra Anderson will be thebatter, the junior adding three thirty three
with a three fifty three on basepercentage four hundred slugging percentage. First pitcher
(23:52):
Maddie Evans. It's up high Andersonten hits and thirty at bats, a
couple of doubles, RBIs, twowalks, one okay on the season.
The one zero in the air leftfield Birding moving over to her left makes

the catch and that ends the anyAim scores twice in the first after one
