News Talk fourteen thirty Kasi. It'seighteen and a half minutes past six o'clock
on a Thursday morning. Dave Sproutalong with Scott Kovac with you this morning,
filling in once again from Bell inthe morning. He was burning off
another vacation day. Good morning,Scott, Good morning, Dave. We
got a little Elton John for youto get the day started. I love
that song, you do, Ido? I really loved that song.

(00:20):
I've actually loved it even when Iwas a kid. Yeah, do you
actually see the movie? I haveeven cultural milestones you've actually experienced. Yeah,
it's hard to miss that one.Well, did you know that the
film from which that song comes, which is Lion King, The Lion King,
the original Lion King. Don't getextra points for knowing that? Yes,

(00:42):
yes, I'll give you that.Uh, that movie debuted in theaters
on this date in what year? What have been ninety two? Something like
that? And um, I gota I got a confession to make.
Oh, I know this. Thisis where you get to make fun of
me. Oh, I don't likethis movie. It's I'm not saying it's

(01:06):
a not a bad movie by anystretch of the imagination. It's it's it's
a fine movie. But there arepeople who, and I starting to sense
here among them, just adore thismovie with all their hearts, and you
just think it's, you know, just a great movie. I'm not well,
I don't know if i'd say allhard day, but most of your
heart a sizeable person percentage, Ithink that's the way to put it.

(01:30):
Yeah, I mean, it's fine. That's my reaction. It's just it's
fine. Um. It was ahuge box office smash, though obviously it
was the second highest grossing film ofnineteen ninety four. Do you recall what
was number one that year at thebox office? Oh? Man, that's
pretty close to Uh, it's goingto be a long time ago. It's

(01:52):
almost thirty years ago. I know. It's kind of pretty close to the
time Good Will Hunting came out?Was that? I don't remember when that
one came out. The top grossingfilm of nineteen ninety four was Forrest Gump.
Forrest Gump, which also fine movie. I'm not enamored with it.
It's fine whatever, it's not bad. It's not bad. But the uh,

(02:16):
The Lion King took in more thanthree hundred million dollars at the box
office in nineteen ninety four. Thesoundtrack was our top more than ten million
copies, which was a record atleast to that time. Might still be
the record for a soundtrack to ananimated film. Okay, and that song

(02:38):
circle of Life courtesy of Elton Johnone of several songs that Elton John co
wrote with Tim Rice, who's bestknown as a lyricist for several Broadway plays,
particularly with in collaboration with the AndrewLloyd Webber. You had your circle
of Life. I just can't waitto be king. You know, I
don't Hokuna matata. I know that'sthat was maybe a detract on my part.

(03:00):
You don't you don't like that song? It means no worries? Yeah
yeah? And can you Feel theLove Tonight? Which we just heard.
Uh those songs actually uh, notall for it, but three three songs
from The Lion King were nominated forSong of the Year at the Academy Awards.

(03:23):
There's five songs that get nominated.Three of them were from The Lion
King. That's that's pretty slow,Kuna Mattada, Circle of Life, and
the winner that year, can youFeel the Love Tonight, which I don't
know maybe I should have played thatone since it actually won the Academy Award.
But for some reason, when Ithink of the Lion King, circle
of Life, is the first songthat comes to mind for me. Yeah,

(03:45):
I don't know, well, andI would say, can you Feel
the Love Tonight is probably a likea ten PM show, you know,
the first thing in the morning.I don't know, can you Feel the
Love? They're kind of the samethough. I think they're very very um,
I don't operatic, might be toostrong with but swelling, you know,
love, you know, and veryemotional songs, you know, with

(04:08):
a lot of uh, there's alot of instrumentation on that circle of I
mean, there's a lot going onwith the whole tonight business. That's what
I think throws it off for amorning song. Anyway, you have weird
standards. But anyway, that wasthat was what's going on in nineteen ninety
four. I'm sure a lot ofpeople were very excited about the release of
the Week and I I don't thinkI saw it in the theaters. I

(04:30):
seen remembers watching it on home video, and at that time probably I might
still have been watching vhs at thehome video at that time instead of at
you know, DVDs were coming intothe marketplace around that time, I think,
and now you know, we streameverything. But yeah, I just
it didn't a lot of these Disneyanimated movies, these Pixar animated movies,

(04:54):
they just they don't hit me.They don't hit with me. I just
maybe it's because I'm I have noemotions. I'm just a robot. I'm
get inside. Maybe those are thereasons that I don't. I don't really
connect with animated movies so well,at least animated the Disney. There's some
animated movies or particularly animated TV showsthat are made for adults that I like

(05:16):
because they have very cynical, youknow, sense of human you know,
a lot of dirty words in therethat you can't repeat on the radio or
say amongst your kids. So mate, you know, that's more my kind
of sensibility. I don't know, but yeah, I just the Disney Flix.
I mean, there are some oldschool ones. Dumbo in some of

(05:38):
the older ones. Fantasia is actuallyI like that one a lot, probably
my favorite of all the Disney animatedmovies. Um, but that one also
was very experimental and it gets alittle weird at times, which I kind
of like. That's what I likeabout the most. It's good, it's
very creative. But anyway, TheLion King, which is probably for many

(06:00):
of our listeners yelling at their radiosaying, shook, Dave, it's my
favorite movie. It's a great song. You don't know anything about anything,
you heartless jerk, which you're You'reright on all counts. I'm heartless jerk.
Anyway, Come on, Dave,it's not that bad. No,
no heartless jerk gets up this timein the morning to comfort. Oh I'm

(06:23):
not here to comfort anyone, justhopefully make you laugh for something. On
the way to work. It issix twenty five on a Thursday morning,
Dave and Scott filling in from lin the Morning on News Talk fourteen thirty
k SI News Talk fourteen thirty kSI six twenty seven on a Thursday morning.
Today is June fifteenth, and I'mgonna go out on a limb,

(06:43):
Scott, Yeah, I'm gonna.I'm gonna make a wager. I'll bet
at least one person has a birthdaytoday or knows somebody who has a birthday.
At least one person listening to usright now either has a birthday or
knows someone who has a birthday today. You know, Dave, I think
that's a dare. That is adare. I think that's a dare to

(07:03):
the listening audience. And I Iam willing to put a little skin in
the game here. Yeah, ifsomeone calls and informs us that it's their
birthday or the birthday of someone theyknow, one such bird, at least
one such person will receive a freebirthday cake or balloon bouquet from the games

(07:25):
Hive. I am willing to makethat bet right now. Oh man,
I know, go one out there, daring bold move on. Oh wow.
I will say that if two peoplecall in, they will both receive
either a free birthday cake or bouquetaballoons. My friend Scott here is doubling

(07:46):
down, and I dig it.We should probably let you know that if
you want to let if you wantto inform us about a birthday, whether
it's yours or somebody who knows somebodywho sell bring a bird to today.
Five one, five, two, three, two, fourteen thirty is number
to call. Let us know.Scott will take down the names. I
will think they'll put together a wholelist if we get a whole bunch of
people, will just list them alloff and then pick two winners out later.

(08:09):
But five one, five, two, three, two, fourteen thirty
is a number to get that liststarted. Let us know who has a
birthday today, and then later thismorning we'll pick out a winner of a
free birthday cake or balloon bouquet fromthe Aimes High Bees. If you have
a birthday today, who do youcelebrate with? Well, there are multiple
celebrities also celebrating birthday's day. Whomay or I may not be listening.

(08:30):
We don't know for sure. Wecould never show. Uh, do you
know does a name Julie Haggarty ringa bella? Have you ever seen the
movie Airplane? No? No,what shouldn't Sorry, we're right back into
your cultural right back under the rock. Yeah. It came out the late
seventies. It's a it's a hilariousmovie. One of my all time favorite

(08:50):
comedies, just totally a total spoofof like disaster movies that were very popular
at the time. And um,Julie Haggerty is very funny. In the
movies. She played uh, whatwe would then call a stewardess, but
now we referred to as a flightattendant on the plane, and she she
has some great moments there. It'spretty much the entire cast has some great
moments in airplane. Someone that hadKareem abdul Jabar playing a pilot, you

(09:13):
know, I mean, it's justit's fantastic. She is sixty eight years
old today. Jim Belushi is sixtynine. You know Jim Belushi Okay,
they used to be on Staray Live, had his own sitcom. It's been
in a bunch of Blues Brothers rightthere. Well that was his brother John.
Yeah, now this isn't John passedaway? Yeah, he died early
eighties. Yeah, all right. Also Salarmember today is rapper actor Ice Cube,

(09:37):
who is fifty four years old.I struggle to wrap my mind around
the idea that ice Cube is formergangster rapper. That's what he used to
say in the eighties, gangster rapper. Uh, ice Cube is fifty four
years old today. How about CourtneyCox? You know, you know,
sorry the pop culture world, didyou not watch Regrets Existing? No?

(10:00):
I didn't know. Wow. Mymy sister though one of her favorite shows
even to this day. Well, she would want to celebrate the fact that
Courtney Cox one of the stars ofFriends is fifty nine years old today.
How about Neil Patrick Harris, HowI Met your Mother? Yes? Do
you remember the show he was onprior to that when he was a kid.
He was just a kid. Hewas like a teenager. He was

(10:22):
on a show called Doogie Howser MDabout a teenager who was literally a doctor.
He's like, you know, asuper genius dude who earns you know,
earns his MD as a teenager andbecomes a doctor. And TV shows
all about how this teenager is adoctor. He is now fifty years old.

(10:43):
He still looks thirty. I mean, it's incredible. He's one of
those guys that just he's gonna lookthirty forever probably, but yeah, very
and he's I think he's performed onBroadway. He's I'm very talented. You
know, I didn't sing a dancer, you can do all that stuff.
So he's done some drama, he'sdone some comedy. First guy fifty years

(11:05):
old today. So just a handfulof the celebrity birthdays. You might be
celebrating a birthday with today, orsomeone you know might be celebrating a birthday
with today, And if you wantto let us know who has a birthday
we'd love to hear at five one, five, two, three two,
fourteen thirty is number for the HighvyBirthday Club. A News Talk fourteen thirty,
k SI News Talk fourteen thirty,KASI six forty four. On a

(11:26):
Thursday, Dave Sprouse, Scott Kovac, phil In in fro Mel in the
morning. Mels taking a vacation daytoday and he'll be back tomorrow for the
latest edition of the Breakfast Club thatgets underway at seven thirty at the Aims
of Water Plant. You'd think bynow I'd taken enough the time to look
up the official name of the pollutioncontrol facility. I think it's I think

(11:48):
there's something water control. You knowwhere it is. It's thirteenth Street.
They're not far from the interstate.Mel will be their live seven thirty to
eight thirty or however long it takesto get everybody a chance to come out
and promote what's happening in Aames.I know there's a lot going on this
weekend. Juneteenth celebrations are happening thisweekend. We've got um, you know,

(12:13):
preparation for Ragbrye continues. I don'tknow if that'll come up. We've
got you know, the AAMS onthe Half Shell on Friday night. Maybe
somebody from the jay Z will stopby jay Z's Jac's listen to jay Z.
Maybe they'll be yeah, yeah, exactly, jay Z and Beyonce will
be at the Breakfast Club. Itis confirmed now the jaycs will be there.

(12:35):
I would have I don't want tomake any promises, but I think
I'm pretty sure that the jac's willstop by to talk about AAMS on the
Half Shell and you know a lotof other stuff. I mean, we
always seem to have some kind offundraisers, fundraisers, you know, other
live music events in addition to thehalf Shell concert series there and uh,
there's various places around town. Infact, we'll probably talk about this a

(12:58):
bit with Kevin Burke later this morningwith his weekly visit around seven called eight
forty five. Uh As we haveour weekly visit with Discover Aims coming up
this morning yet, but there's alwaysplenty to talk about the Breakfast Club.
So anyone who wants to talk aboutwhat's happening in Ames, Uh, yeah,
you can pop by and say hito Mel at the Water and Plution
Control Plant tomorrow morning. Mel willbe back with the City of Aimes Electric

(13:22):
Services administration. I'm pointing the wrongway, aren't I? I'm yes,
like anybody can tell which way I'mpointing well, in the in the studio,
it is very importial because people cannotice gave over the year which way
you're pointing across from somebody. Somebody'sspidery scents started tingling there when I pointed
to my to the to the east, to the wet I see, I

(13:43):
don't even know what direction I'm lookingat this. Yes, that's that is
your west, that's west. Normallywe're doing something a little different today where
I'm in the newsroom, Scott's inthe studio, but normally in the studio.
You know, I sent in thestudio I'm looking north, but now
I'm looking south. But I can'tget that square in my head. So
I think I'm still looking north, and I think west is to my right,

(14:05):
but that's not the case. East, yep, West. There we
go, And anybody who has stereoin their radio can tell you tell exactly
what happened. Am stereo that reallycaught on back of the nineties anyway?
Uh I mentioned you know Rag bryis coming of course, the state in
Aims is on July twenty fifth, and we've talked about this with the aforementioned

(14:31):
um uh Kevin Burke with with DiscoverAims that there had been plans to make
an attempt for the worlds to seta record for like the world's largest bike
ride or something like that, butnot the case. The Des Moines Register
itself is reporting uh that the UHthe Cross State Bike Ride, the Register's

(14:56):
annual Great Bicycle Ride across Iowa ifyou're not familiar, well no longer attempt
to set a Guinness World Record withthe this year's fiftieth anniversary of the week
long event. Now that that theplan was to set that record during the
ride between Aimes and Des Moines onJuly twenty sixth, but um, it's

(15:16):
probably apparently they're not going to tryto make it an official, officially official
record. The record for Ragbride participantswas actually set last year. No really,
twenty nineteen. Pardon me, twentynine. She just read the whole
story day forty thousand riders we're partof the ride with the last time it

(15:39):
went through De Moines that was intwenty nine or the De Moines area winner
set to Indianola in twenty nineteen.Ride director Matt Fippen had speculated that the
July twenty six Aims to de Moinessegment of this year's Ragbride will draw upward
of one hundred thousand riders as itpasses through Slater Madrid in Polke City and
then down to Ankeny, where they'repreerving for to host at least sixty thousand

(16:03):
rioters, which would break a Guinnessrecord for largest parade of bicycles, which
was set in two thousand Jun twothousand, forty eight thousand, six hundred
and fifteen people participated in an eighteenpoint two mile ride in I'm probably gonna
butcher this name. Okay U DeeneItaly U d i n E is the

(16:26):
name of the town in Italy wherethis happened. If you want to look
it up and figure out how topronounce it, because I don't know the
Guinness record entry. Also notice thatthe most participants in any bicycle tour and
excess of a thousand kilometers is morethan two thousand, which happened during the
Australian Bicentennial CALTEX's bike ride from Melbourneto Sydney in nineteen eighty eight. That's
a mouthful. It's almost as badas saying all the words in rag Bye.

(16:51):
Then yes. So rag Bye hastwenty eight thousand registered participants, so
I'm not sure why it doesn't holdthe you know, the official record for
long most participants in a bicycle tour, but it falls short because it only
covers five hundred miles. So it'sgot to be more than six one thousand

(17:12):
kilometers, which is six hundred twentyone miles to qualify for that record for
the most participants in a in atour. So apparently the plan is to
no longer be I guess certified bythe Guinness Book of World Records people for

(17:32):
having the most participants in a abicycle ride. The Guinness World Records people
informed Ragbyde at some point that ithad retired the record that was sed in
Italy, so it won't be availableas a mark for Ragbrighte to could beat
against. I don't know what thatmeans that, I don't know. Fortunate

(17:56):
for them, I guess we're gonnaput this on the Guinness World Records people.
Uh. They instead offered rag Brydethe chance to chase a record for
a bike race. But reg Bryeis not a race, as we all
know. Thank goodness for that. The way pizza, yeah, the way
people party along the route, it'sa nobody's gonna win that race, I

(18:17):
assure you. Um So, Iguess the record for for most participants in
a in a bicycle ride is notgoing to be set. It will at
least not be recognized. They're stilltalking, you know, sixty thousand.
Uh, people are more and maybethey'll hit one hundred thousand. I don't
know if they're still gonna bother totry to keep account, but even if

(18:38):
they do, it won't be recognizedby Guinness. So I'm gonna I'm gonna
boycott Guinness beer just now that's confusing. Yeah, well that I don't drink
it anyway. So and so ifyou're if you're thinking about being you know,

(18:59):
on a part of a record,I guess you you'll have to let
that dream go. Thanks Guinness, thanks a lot it. I mean,
it's the Guinness people to blame here, not the Register people, not the
organizers of rag Brye. I agree. Yeah, we'll take We're gonna take
bottles of Guinness and just smash themin the street when No, I don't

(19:21):
do that though it seems excessive day. Yeah, that'll probably pop a lot
of holes in the bike tires.Six fifty two on Newstok fourteen thirty k
A s I six fifty three onyour Thursday morning here on Newstok fourteen thirty
k s I. Scott and I'vebeen talking about rag Brye a little bit
and they're no longer going to attemptto set a Guinness World record because the

(19:41):
Guinness people are being stuck up aboutit. So what do we don't We
don't need them to set records.Nonetheless, they are expecting forty to sixty
thousand riders each day on rag Brye. Already twenty eight thousand riders are registered
as weekly or single day riders. And when it just actually got around to

(20:03):
reading the rest of this dein reistoricle, I have some any world record stap
Ragbye will turn to the official recordkeepers it has relied on for decades to
gage the size of the crowds. It draws the Iowa State Patrol, which
anyone wily provides route control and trafficdirection during the ride. So we'll check
in with the State Patrol. Iguess after all of a sudden done to
see how many people actually took partin the ride. Now you can be

(20:26):
as a single day writer. Youcan register that way. And I wonder
if riding from my home in Westdes Moines to downtown will qualify me as
a single day writer or can Ijust do I need to register or can
I just like blend in with thecrowd? Would that be cool? Because

(20:48):
the thing, there's the thing Iwant to do, which is right around
Jack Drice Stadium. Now I've beenobviously I've been a Jack Rice Stadium like
a million times, right, Butpart of the route, if you're not
aware, takes folks in and Ithink they enter from West aims Um enter
town from there and you go biketo Jack Trice Stadium and then you get
to go up on the concourse.Last time that's cool. Yeah, last

(21:11):
time to hear it was here. They had people riding around the outside of
the field itself. There's a kindof asphaltum, not a track, and
then but an asphalt area about loopyeah maybe four feet wide, yeah,
something like that that's along the edges. You probably noticed that. And then
they let riders go around that partand out of stadium. Uh Now,

(21:37):
thanks to renovations at Jack Trice thathave happened since then, you can actually
loop around the entire stadium without leavingand going back in, whether you're a
fan there or you if you're ridingyour bike. So they have, you
know, a way for people togo and ride up onto the concourse,
You ride around the stadium and thenyou as you leave, you go across
the pedestrian bridge over University Boulevard. And that's what I want to do.

(22:00):
So I walked across the pedestrian bridge, you know, pretty much every game
last season, as a sports directorshould as as all fans should really,
but I want to take my bikeover the or on the poedestrian bridge.
I mean I can do that, right, I can just like blend in
with the crowd and yeah, absolutelyyeah, and then make my way downtown

(22:22):
for all the fun and entertainment, right exactly, the festivities have got to
happen downtown. I was chatting withan acquaintance yesterday who wasn't in town last
time. Rag Byke came through andhe was asking me what's it what's it
like? And I said, well, it's kind of controlled chaos. I
think it's the best way to putit, because I thought, you know,
I was downtown hanging out, uhwhen the last rag Bike came through

(22:47):
town, and it was a littlecrowded. There were a lot of people,
but they were everybody's in such goodspirits that there really wasn't fear And
I kind of I gotta admit ofminiphobia of large crowds that are aren't at
sports stadiums, but everybody really justthey were all on the same page.
They were just having a good time, not bothering anyone else or causing any

(23:08):
trouble. So hopefully that'll be thesame case. July twenty fifth and brag
Bryce comes back to Ames twenty more. David Scott comes back after a Texas
Nation and a news update. It'ssixty eight A new Stok fourteen thirty a
SI new Stock fourteen thirty KSI seventwenty four on a Thursday morning. I'm

(23:30):
Dave Sprout. He is Scott Kovac. We are filling in for the vacationing
mel in the morning. He willreturn tomorrow. As part of that,
the Breakfast Club will be live atthe Ames Water Plant, the water and
plution control facility out on thirteenth Street. If you want to stop by,
he'll be there from seven thirty toeight thirty tomorrow morning. I hope you
can pop by and visit with melGood. Have him to pop in real
quick this morning despite taking a vacationday, so you can visit with Mark

(23:52):
Chasey there. Yeah. Absolutely,he was just in and out. Zip
zip zip. But anyway, Scott, I need your help, help me
make sense of this because I seeheadline number one. Yeah, Iowa issue
and Northern Iowa are increasing tuition thisfall. Yeah, I saw that headline
number two. University of Iowa, you and I presidents receive raises. Yeah,

(24:21):
help me make sense of this.I kind of understand. I'm more
than kind of understand why there's anecessity to increase tuition at all three universities.
Three and a half percent increase thatgoes to effect this fall at Iowa,
State, Iowa and Northern Iowa approvedby the Board of Regions yesterday unanimously.

(24:41):
It comes to about three hundred dollarsa year for in state students.
It's it's unfortunate but necessary. Idon't blame the regions for raising tuition.
That's not the issue I have hereI blame the legislature for basically not giving
any addition money to these state universities. They're called state universities for a reason.

(25:06):
They are funded. The legislature annuallyallocates funds. They have an increased
that allocation in a couple of years. I think certainly certainly didn't do it
this year, and as a result, there's necessity for tuition to go up.
I get that it's unfortunate, butit's got to happen. Part I
don't understand is that at the sametime, also unanimously, you're giving raises

(25:30):
to two of your university presidents.University of Iowa president Barbara Wilson received will
receive a fifty thousand dollars bump inher salary effective July one, the seven
and a half basically a little morethan seven a half percent raise increases her
yearly salary to seven hundred thousand dollars. Because that's in addition, University or

(25:56):
Northern Iowa president Mark Nook was awardeda fifteen thousand dollars raise to his annual
base salary, which bumps him upby almost five percent to three hundred seventy
two one hundred ten dollars annually.Meanwhile, I was state university president Windy
Winterstein did not get a raise herstbase salary of six hundred and fifty thousand

(26:21):
dollars or means the same, Idon't know. I don't like the phrase
that's a bad look because it reducesgenuine issues down to public relations issue.
But increase in tuition and giving yourtop university executives raises is a bad look.

(26:45):
I cannot reconcile those two things. And I understand you need to pay
people good people. And this isnothing against those three university presidents. I'm
sure they're all doing a great job. I'm not qualified to tell you whether
they are or not. But toincrease tuition again out of necessity, I

(27:08):
get it. But to also handout raises two individuals making six figures already
at the same time, it's lessthan ideal, I think, not exactly.
I mean. And because this isrelated to employment and things like that,

(27:32):
the Board of Regents gets to makethis decision in private, which is
allowed by state law. They alsochose not to say anything publicly about these
raises. Why they voted that way? Said that, I mean, they're
not obligated to but investigative journalists beingwhat they are, and this out pretty

(27:53):
clearly. Wow. But the resultof the vote is public. I mean
they had to do that in public. The discussions about the vote did not
have to take place in public. The vote itself did, and the numbers
have to be public. That's fine. Their reasoning behind it does not have
to be public. But I reallywant to hear the reasoning behind this,
you know, Dave, I thinkI might know. Why is that?

(28:15):
Well, it's you know, likeyou said, bad look or optics or
what have you. I like tothink that a president of our university,
well, if I can say thatas an alum of Iowa State, I
happen to think what happened behind closeddoors is that President Winterstein said this is

(28:36):
going to look bad if we allgive ourselves raises, and the other two
said, nah, I do.I'm going to disagree with that. Yeah,
I think, well, I thinkif if Windy Winterstein had been offered
a raise, she would have donewhat any sane person would do when offered
to raise and take the money. But that's just me. As we were

(29:02):
discussing earlier why I don't care forDisney films because I'm a heartless jerk with
a cynical worldview. So that's howI'm going. Obviously you have a different,
more optimistic worldview in your hope isthat when you're interesting or whoever interposition
would turn down the salary increase andsay, you know what, this is
bad timing because we're also increasing tuition. That'd be nice to think that would
happen. I find it hard tobelieve that would happen. And I'm not

(29:23):
necessarily faulting the you and I presidentor the University of Iowa president for taking
the raises, although maybe it wouldbe nice to think that they would say,
you know what, let's maybe notbecause we're asking students to pay more
and not offering them the support thatthis state should. Looking at you,
Iowa Legislature, and maybe maybe Ican get by on my six hundred fifty

(29:48):
thousand dollars a year salary, andnot necessarily, maybe I can get by
on my three hundred fifty or whateverit is salary prior to, you know,
the raise that you and I presidenttook. Maybe you know, they
can clip some coupons or find somediscounts on what they need to buy to
survive on those salaries and maybe putthat money into resources that will directly help

(30:14):
students on your campus or faculty onyour campus. I don't know, and
I understand. I believe that theregions also voted to approve or increase compensation
for faculty in general. But thisto me not a great as they say,

(30:34):
not a great look. Just it'sa bad idea, and it perpetuates
the perception that a university president orother executives in high levels of you know,
of the organization, are making verylarge salaries relative to general US population,

(30:57):
will not necessarily being in touch withwhat's going on actually with students and
everyday life on campus. That's mytake on it. Yeah, I would
say I like to think Dave, you know, we talk about your cynicism
and your optimism and my optimism. You know, as far as that cynicism
goes in Disney, I think that'swhat Disney is there for, is to

(31:22):
feat us optimist, feed us theoptimism that we find, and profits at
the expense of their writers and yeahsomething day labor and there do people who
actually make the movies happen. Yeah, we get look behind the seat and
see now see I'm getting cynical againwith that, we should probably take a
break and bring you the news, because otherwise I'll just take us down into
the whole of cynicism in which Ilive. Seven thirty three on Newstalk fourteen

Minutes. That, of course,is presented by Mary Greeley Medical Center.
IF Sergeant Watson from the East PoliceSpartan joining us on the line. Sergeant,
good morning, good morning. Howare you. I'm very well yourself.
I'm doing I'm doing good today. All right, is traffic doing good

(32:08):
today? That's the key question.Yeah, traffic, traffic is really good
today. We have nothing going onright now, so hopefully we can I
don't know, hopefully we can keepit that way. Yeah, that sounds
like a good plan to me.Hey, how about a quick shout out.
I probably should have mentioned this yesterday, but big shout out to your
guy Jason Tuttle, a commander withthe good old Aimes PD, was recognized

(32:29):
at the city council meeting the othernight. Yeah, so yes, for
the event that occurred, you know, a year right out, a year
ago out there at the church. So really really neat thing. Um.
You know, we had a smallpresentation here and then they did something up
in the council chambers with the councilso, um, you know, we
we like like to see those andlike to recognize those people who do those

(32:53):
good things like that. Yeah,I'm sure it's a you know, tricky
situation because we're talking about an eventthat led to the depth of two people
at the Cornerstone Church last June. But also just so happens, the Commander
Tuttle was was there. Uh,he didn't have his uh best on or
anything, but he sprang into actionuh when when the shots rang out,

(33:13):
and was recognized for those actions umat the city council meeting this week,
and uh, you know you gottagive him cred. I mean, yeah,
it's a tragic situation and nobody's reallycelebrating uh what happened there, but
it's worth that, i think takethe time to recognize what what Jason did
and how he helped help people inthat situation that I'm sure nobody saw coming.

(33:37):
Absolutely, you know, I certainlyagree nobody saw coming. Um.
Just you know, one of thosethings where people were there at the church,
um, and and actually Commander Tuttlewas there for for a meeting from
my knowledge, and hurt. Hurt, some shots rang out out in the
parking lot, so you know, jumped into action and and uh went right
out there. Was one of thefirst first ones basically on seeing officer wise

(34:01):
as he was right there, youknow, on duty, on duty or
not, he certainly stepped in anddid what he could do our best,
Commander Tuttle, and express our congratulationshere on earning the uh the award of
Valor. It's the city's highest honor. So that's that's a pretty pretty good
deal for him. Yeah, it'sa neat honor. That is the city's

(34:22):
highest highest award there, so um, certainly well well deserved for him.
All right, Uh now let's uhonce again, let's make sure everybody's safe
this morning. It's a kind ofa hazy day. I think that Canadian
wildfire smoke is uh is h amongus, if you will, hopefully that
I wouldn't imagine that would affect traffic, but it might affect folks who have

(34:45):
some respiratory illnesses or breathing difficulties.Yeah, I saw something on that that
you know, with these hot humandays, that that smoke was going to
be a little more prevalent. Soyeah, hopefully, um, you know,
kind of shouldn't affect traffic. Iwouldn't think, but yeah, if
you're feeling anything, certainly you've givenninety one one a call if if you

(35:07):
know health wise, Yeah, they'llget the ambulance right to you if you
think you need it. So don'tdon't hesitate to make sure you take care
of yourself. Not a lot ofpeople who want to kind of tough their
way through something like that, butsometimes we need help, that's okay,
Yeah, absolutely, yes, Sothat phone number is there for a reason.
Yeah, and that's why police arethere, ambulance, EMTs, fire

(35:30):
department, all those they're they're hereto help. We'll be right there absolutely.
All right, stay safe out there, Sergeant Watson. We appreciate the
time and the update. Very good. Thank you, sir. You bet.

It's report that's presented by very reallyMedical Center on News Talk fourteen thirty
KASI News Talk fourteen thirty k As I seven fifty one on a Thursday

(35:54):
morning, Dave Sprouse got Kovac inwith you if it's feeling in the vacationing
melt in the morning and we're joinedby are a good buddy, Damien Prigate,
Sir with the City of Aims. He's a traffic engineer. And I
didn't know you also carried this title, Damien the airport manager. Yeah.
It was a little bit of asurprise to me too. After I got

(36:15):
this job. But when the previousmanager retired, they were looking for a
home for it, and so Iguess I was the lucky lucky recipient.
Yeah, I guess something comes alongand say, oh, by the way,
we didn't tell you about this whenyou interviewed or anything, but just
so you know you're in charge ofthe airport. Yeah, that too.
Exactly. You might need a biggerbusiness card after Saturday because the name of

(36:37):
the airport is getting a little longer. It'll be dedicated on Saturday as the
James Herman Banning Aimes Municipal Airports. That I get that entire name correct,
Yeah, Yeah, that was great. Yep, I'm glad I got it
right. What's going to happen onSaturday? What are some of the events
that go along with the dedication?Yeah, so if you're interested that if

(37:00):
people haven't heard that the name changeis going to come up, it would
be great for them if they're availableto attend the There's a dedication ceremony and
it starts at ten am on Juneseventeenth, Saturday, and it's on the
north side of the terminal building. So if you're not familiar with where the
airport is, you probably aren't familiarwith where Sam's Club and Lowe's is.

(37:22):
So do you go down to aairport road in South Duff Head west on
Airport Drive just for I don't know, about quarter mile half mile on the
south side of the road is theairport. You'll see a big entry sign.
There's parking right in front of theterminal building, so you can go
there and participate in that dedication ceremonywhere we're going to unveil the new name

(37:45):
of the airport. And it's avery interesting story. We've we've talked about
this before as the name was underconsideration, and then the city council actually
voted to officially go ahead with thename change in honor of James Herman Banning,
who a ten at Iowa State backin nineteen nineteen became the first African
American to receive his pilot's license fromthe US Department of Commerce. He became

(38:07):
he and Thomas Allen became the firstAfrican Americans to complete a transcontinental flight,
not a single flight, they didit in legs, but they flew across
the country. And his great nephewis going to be part of the ceremony
from what I understand, Yeah, that's right, Christopher Heart, who has
quite quite a resume himself if youlook him up. He's going to be

(38:30):
there and kind of speak to misterBanning and his history and his life.
So that'd be really really neat eventsfor people if their interest in coming out.
And something else that I would pointout that wasn't maybe an information,
is that there'll be uh inside theterminal building, so like once the ceremony's
done, don't leave, you cango inside the building. There's a history

(38:50):
wall just inside in the lobby thatgives more information on mister Banning and some
other historical noteworthy people who contributed toaviation and aims. So that's a new
thing that just got installed. Soit would be something that I think you
should check out. Excellent. Yeah, I'm sure that will be pretty fascinating.
And I noticed I saw see onthe website here for the City of

(39:12):
Aims with a little article about theceremony that's coming up. They have a
picture of one of the signs alongAirport Road. They already got a name,
a sign up with James Herman BanningAmes Municipal Airport. So what was
the process like to put together thatdisplay you mentioned as well as the changing
in the signage, Well, therewas a lot of individuals. As you

(39:34):
know, we're involved when this namingwas kind of in infancy, so we
just worked together on kind of whatthe signs should look like. Um,
it was really important for a coupleof things. One that we had the
new name, but we wanted tomake sure that Aims remained in the name
so that people who who was justJames Herman Banning Airport and you're not familiar

(39:55):
with that, it's an Aims airport, so we wanted to make sure we
left the word Aims in there. But really it's if you out there,
the kind of the design is verymodern, very clean, So that's really
what what dictated what the design lookedlike. But it's a long name,
but I think it's really good tocelebrate the person by having like their full

(40:16):
name up there. A little bitof a mouthful, but I think it
looks really if you go out there, the new science, in my opinion,
looks really slick. Yeah, thepilots, they already have like code
for these things, and like theFAA, there's already like a designation.
I don't I don't think that changeswith the name of the airport changing.
They still have their like letters andnumbers that indicate pretty much every airport in

(40:37):
the country. Right. Absolutely, this is really, this is really for
our Aims community and people that comeand visit the airport. You're a pilot,
your life won't change hardly at all'sI can just imagine the pilot coming
on now. If you'll look toyour left, you'll see James Herman Benning
Airport for the City of Aims.Wait, oh no, we don't get

(40:58):
those kind of planes and names.I'm sorry, got carried. Small chargers
might do it, Small chargers mightdo it. Yeah. Now, I
don't know how much you're involved withthis, Damian, but I also see
that um Following the dedication on Saturday, folks are also invited to be part
of the Juneteenth Celebration Sunday afternoon tofourth thirty over Banshell Park. So that's

(41:20):
a whole day right there, justall planned out for you, I guess.
Yeah. So you could come anddo the dedication at ten am in
the morning and then get some lunchand swing over to the Juneteente celebration that's
in the Bandshell, which I thinkeverybody knows where the Benchell is. If
you don't, it's over on DeffAvenue between fifth and sixth Street. Yeah,

(41:40):
and then we're gonna have a presentationabout banning that starts at two thirty
on the stage there at the Bandshell. So if you want to learn a
little bit more about James Herman banning, that's another opportunity. And of course
all these things that both the dedicationceremony and the h the Juntee celebration at
Banshell Park both on they're free. That's the best part. They're free,

(42:01):
and another just another reason for ourcommunity to get together exactly and get out,
maybe meet somebody haven't met before. It should be really I think hopefully
the weather looks really good, soit should be a great day. That
sounds good in the Court City,Ames Police, Fire Department, of Water
Department, to Parks and X Department, all part of the event at the
Banshell Park for the Juneteenth Celebration onSaturday afternoon and again the airport dedication in

(42:25):
honor of James Herman Vanning gets underwayat ten o'clock Saturday morning. Damien,
thanks so much for your time, have a great weekend and enjoy all the
ceremonies. Absolutely thanks for having meyou bet. Damian Prankt, Sir Airport
Engineer and traffic Engineer for the Cityof Ames, joining us this morning.
We've got more to come. Daveand Scott filling in from Mel. A
quick reminder, still taking birthdays fiveone, five, two, three,

(42:46):
two, fourteen thirty to get onthe high Vee birthday club list. New
Stalk fourteen thirty Kasi, It's eightfourteen on a Thursday morning. Dave's sprout
here along with Scott Kovac filling infor Mel in the morning. Using a
vacation day today, but that doesn'tstop Michael Gallimo from stopping in the Maestro

(43:09):
as to say Michael and welcome back. And what's what's on tap for tonight's
Aimes Municipal Band concert. Oh,it's going to be a terrific concert and
it's going to be a beautiful nighttoo. So we have a vocal soloist
with us tonight, Mindy Pavos,And in addition to Mindy singing tonight,
her daughter is going to sing aselection as well. She's going to sing

(43:30):
a piece called Part of Your World, which is from The Little Mermaid Disney's
cartoon and just a beautiful piece. So it's gonna be fun. One of
the things that we're doing tonight thatspecial is we're starting a little bit early.
We're starting at seven forty five witha Flag Day ceremony which will be

(43:50):
presented by members of the Boy ScoutTroupe one ninety six and the Ames Elks
Lodge. So that's an annual eventthat's always very special. Yesterday was Flag
Day, so we'll be doing apresentation at seven forty five tonight, so'll
get out to Bandshell Park a littleextra early tonight, uh and the band
program. One of the pieces we'reperforming tonight is National Emblem March, which

(44:15):
is of course for the flag,a very traditional march which people know but
don't always recognize that in the firststrain of the march. The composer uses
the national anthem yum but um bumbum dum bum bum bum. So it's
it's dead march. So uh,apology, apologize for my singing, but

(44:37):
it's better than either one or us. Yeah, it's it's beyond me conduct
bands. I'm an instrumentalist, butit's a it's a terrific Uh. It's
a terrific piece and really a niceway to recognize Flag Day mandatory attendance for
Scott. We were talking yesterdaybe sinceit was Flag Day that Scott doesn't know
anything about the American flags, Americaand everything is I'm kidding, Oh,

(45:02):
it's fable. I couldn't. Icouldn't help, but gifts gotta well.
I could have helped, but Ididn't want to. I just gave him
a hard time about I understanding allthat. But we we love the patriotic
aspects of those municipal band concerts andoh yeah, you know what July fourth
right around the corner, right aroundthe corner. And as you know,
we always uh conclude our performances witha march by John Phillips. Who's that

(45:24):
We're doing one tonight called the WashingtonPost bomb bomb Up you know, everybody
knows the knows the march, butit really was not a march when it
was first composed in eighteen eighty nine. There was a very famous dance at
that time called the two step, and this was probably the tune most associated

(45:45):
with the two step dance. Uhand uh um. It's become known as
a march, but that's not kindof how it was originally used. But
uh, it's it's a it's aterrific march. Susan wrote about one hundred
and thirty marches and they're all prettygood, and this is one of his
most famous. It's interesting I associatethe two steps with country music, like
old school country, western swing typemusic. Yeah. Different Back in the

(46:07):
eighteen eighties, I guess country musicdidn't exist, but no, no,
not really. Yeah. Yeah,And one of the things we're doing tonight
is a neat medley from the rockgroup Chicago. Uh make me smile?
Does anybody really know what time itis? Saturday in the park twenty five
or six to four? And asyou know that they were just at Steven's
Auditorium, I think like around thethird week of May they were. They

(46:30):
were out there, so you knowthey were out there. We're doing a
piece, a medley of Disney movieselections, which is going to be a
lot of fun, some contemporary Disneythings, anything from The Lion King.
Um, yeah, I think so. The questions are b our guest one
is can you feel the love tonight? That's the one. Yeah, that's

(46:52):
the one we were we were discussingthis morning. We opened up with a
song from The Lion King because todayis the anniversary of the release of The
Lion King. Oh really in nineteenninety four, Yeah, Okay, my
wife and I saw the Lion Kingproduction down in Des Moines, which I
think stage. Yeah, the stageversion, which was just spectacular. Oh
my gosh, that was so good. But a friend like me is in

(47:14):
there and you'll be in my heart. And then if I didn't have you,
a couple of other selections for somefrom Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast,
So just all that Disney movie magic. I'll put on my Disneys Disney
Princess outfit for tonight show that thereyou go, there you go. You
know. The part of your Worldselection that we're doing with Emma Pavsay is

(47:38):
a special arrangement and we had toget permission. Anytime we do an arrangement,
we always have to get permission fromthe licensing companies, and one of
the things that's in the contract thatwith them is that we will not dress
up in as a Disney character orto do any of that. So uh,
kind of a behind the scenes alittle comment that we're not allowed to

(47:59):
do that. Who would violate thecopyright agreement that we have. But if
somebody just showed up, you canbe nodding yourself out. Can't do anything
about that. I can't stop you. No, we can't stop you know.
That would be fine, but weare not allowed to do that.
Gotcha. So we're doing some otherfun things, a Spanish march and a
medley of Italian movie themes which isfun in an Irish air and uh.

(48:21):
And then prior to doing the SusanMarch, we will again do this hymn
tune called Prayer for Ukraine that wedo kind of a stand for solidarity with
people from Ukraine, and that's becomevery popular with the crowd and it's going
to be a terrific concert. Concertstarts at eight o'clock and again seven forty

(48:42):
five, we will do that FlagDay ceremony, and we are always grateful
to the members of the Boy ScoutTroop one ninety six and the members of
the Ames Elks Lodge for presenting that. They do just a very professional job
with that. It's a very veryspecial, very meaningful the way that they
present that. All right, Andif you can't make it out to tonight's

(49:05):
Benshell concert, we've got live broadcastof that right here on Newstalk fourteen thirty
k s I. So, uh, we'll give you. We'll give you
a feel, if not quite thesame experience of being there in person.
Great and we appreciate that. Andperhaps we need to bring Scout Scott out
for the Flag Day ceremony, somaybe he can absolutely does some information about
that. Yeah, I'll be runningthe board back he sprint better be here

(49:32):
to make sure we've been here inthe actual can't be in two places at
once, unfortunately, Scott. We'llFaceTime him. Yeah, there you go,
There you go. Michael, alwaysa pleasure, thanks for stopping in.
Best of luck with tonight's concert.Thank you all so much. Thanks
d Thanks Michael Gillimo, the maestroleading the Aims Municipal Band tonight at Benshell
Park and you can hear it liveas well on Newstalk fourteen thirty k A

(49:54):
s I at eight o'clock a twentyfour on a Thursday morning, Dave Sprow
along with Scot Govac filling in formel In the morning. Was taking a
vacation day. But we know someonewho never takes vacations. It's Vicky Newell
from Prime Time Alive. Vicky, good morning, good morning. Always always
on the job, right, alwayson the job. No, you know
what I do, enjoy my vacationtime. That's good for you. So

(50:15):
what keeps you going? You comeback, you get re energizing, you're
ready for whatever comes next. WithPrime Time Alive, absolutely everybody needs that
time. You know, you justneed a little time away, I think
to appreciate what you do have andand yeah, like you said, reinvigorate
yourself to get back at it.That's a lot of what Primetime Alive does
for our seniors in the community. It sure does you, we say,

(50:39):
Primetime Alive. Our our goal isto help you live well and age well
and give you the tools for that. And probably the one that people know
most about our education programs that wehold Gosh a couple of them every month,
and we we've already held our twoprograms for the month of June,

(51:00):
which were excellent programs, so wehave just a little bit of break then
with the holiday coming up too.So our next program isn't until Wednesday,
July nineteenth, two pm, MaryGreeley and Myers Auditorium, and it's weight
management for older adults. And Ithink there's hardly a person you'll talk to

(51:22):
that doesn't say, you know,I hit fifty, or I hit sixty,
or I hit seventy, and youknow, I just gained weight and
I couldn't get it off. Andso we have asked rachel I'm sorry.
Rachelle McCabe. She's a nurse practitionerwith Iowa Weight Loss Specialists and Iowa Weight

(51:43):
Laws Specialists have a clinic within MaryGreeley Medical Center and she's a nurse practitioner
there and she is going to coverwhy being at a healthy weight is important
as we age those challenges of losingweight as an older adult, and then
tips on losing weight excellent. Ican speak from a little bit experience.

(52:04):
I'm not, you know, inthe age group quite yet getting there,
but not quite yet. But Ican tell you one of a few years
ago, I finally got motivated tolose some weight because I went to my
aennial physical and the doctor and didall the tests and said, well,
you're getting your blood pressure is gettingup there a little bit, a little
concerned about diabetes things like that,And once I was able to drop some

(52:24):
pounds, those things changed dramatically. And I didn't, you know, really
add any exercise to my routine, which is a whole separate matter, but
just being able to lose some weightreally improved my physical condition in the sense
that I was much less risk forthings like heart disease or diabetes. Well,
and that's just it. I don'tthink people realize how losing just ten

(52:46):
pounds can make a difference with theirhealth. And really, exercise is so
important for so many things, butfor most of us it comes down to
our diet. And you know, the hard thing is, I think there's
not a person out there that doesn'tknow that being at a healthy weight is

(53:07):
better for you, and that youknow, how do we lose weight.
We consume less calories than or consumeless calories. Let me think we burn
more calories than we can Sue therewe go. You know, we know
those things, but sometimes it hereit takes hearing it from the right person

(53:27):
or in a different reason or ina different way, and giving us some
additional information. So you may thinkyou know this, but I will let
you know. I can guarantee you'lllearn something new from the program. So
yeah, I'm excited. You know. What the great thing is is,
I'm in this age group and alot of times I just sit back and
go what do I want to learnabout? What do I want to know

(53:51):
as I get older? And thisis definitely one of those, you know,
so hope you can a lot ofyou can join us out there.
And the great thing our programs atis one of our programs that's offered both
in person and you can also signon virtually. And then we do also
record, gosh, the vast majorityof our programs that we share out later

(54:13):
with our Primetime Alive members a linkto watch the recording, or anybody can
go to our website and get alink to the recordings as well. All
right, anything else coming up youwant to mention Vickie, you know,
I'll just throw out there quick. We have one other program in July.
It's Tuesday, July twenty fifth, which I know is the day right bryce
here, it's the afternoon it's stoppedthe bleed and one of our paramedics is

(54:37):
giving this program. It's going tobe hands on practice of applying direct pressure,
packing a wound, and using atourniquet to stop bleeding. And this
is a national program out there too, because they've found that there's a lot
of people that could have been savedif people knew how to appropriately stop the

(54:57):
bleed. And so it's a greathand program. You'll get to practice what
you are taught. This program though, because of the nature of it,
is only offered in person, soyou do need to attend in person Bessie
Meyer's Auditorium, Mary Greeley Medical Center. The only other plug I want to
put out there is we are renewingPrimetime Alive memberships. It's that time of

(55:22):
year, so as a reminder tothose out there who who haven't renewed yet,
it is now time, all right, Vicky. How can folks find
out more information about how to renewand the other all the other programs happening
with Primetime Alive. The best thingto do is to go to our website
MGMC dot org, slash PTA andyou can sign up for programs, you

(55:43):
can renew your membership and you canfind out more information about the benefits of
membership. Thanks for stopping in,Vicky, Always a pleasure. Thanks for
having met Vicky Knew Primetime Alive atMary Really Medical Center. Real quick,

Did we get any birthday calls? You know? Desperate? No? Why

(56:30):
is it when we fill in forMel nobody has a birthday? We just
I don't know. It's weird,but the Birthday Club remains open. I
actually will reopen tomorrow, I guessI should say. And keep in mind
Monday is a holiday, and sowe're taking that day off. Mel,

about sharing, and also don't beshy abouts by the breakfast club. Mel

not far from thirty five there, and it'll be a visiting folks seven thirty

(57:19):
to eight thirty maybe clock. Sometimessometimes it goes I'll write it to the
end of the show to nine o'clock, as so many people show up and
we know there's a lot going onthis weekend. We're gonna get more into
that with our friend Kevin Burke fromDiscover Aims. Just a few moments here
he'll presumably call in, or somebodywith Discovering Aims presumably calling in, So

(57:43):
we'll discuss the weekend events coming upwith with Kevin. You can go out
to the water plution control plant tomorrowwith Mel in the morning for the breakfast
club tomorrow. If you want topromote something that's happening in Ames this weekend
or in the coming weeks too,if you want to give us a heads
up something coming along, you know, in July, August, even,
well, what the heck, justlet us know. We'd appreciate that.

(58:04):
I'm kind of fascinated, Scott. You might have heard in our newscast about
this Iowa State study about the positiveeffects of staying off social media for darn's
sake, that was fascinating to me. Yeah, so I pulled up the
article that Iowa Stay put out aboutthis this research, and it is remarkable.

(58:27):
Researchers at Iowa State found that duringa two week experiment with two hundred
thirty college students, they scored significantlylower those who were reminded to limit their
social media usage to thirty minutes aday. That was about half the participants.
So was that one hundred and fifteenstudents. They scored significantly lower for
anxiety, depression, loneliness, andfear of missing out compared to those who

(58:52):
did not receive the reminders to layoff the social media and I particularly connect
with the fear of missing out part. I am absolutely addicted to Twitter.
I don't post a ton, butI if I'm at home, just sitting
around watching TV, or maybe thebaseball game is on or whatever, I

(59:14):
got my laptop on my lap,I got Twitter open. I'm checking the
scroll and I'm seeing what's going on. And if I try to remove myself
from that and you close the laptopor stay off my phone and don't check
the Twitter, I have that fearof missing out. It was like,
I'm disconnected from the world if I'mnot looking at social media, which can

(59:37):
be good or bad. I mean, there are times you want to be
disconnected from the world, right youMaybe you want to immerse yourself in the
ball game you're watching, or amovie or TV show or whatever you're doing.
But the more time that I spendon social media, the more I'm
like, I'm missing out on lookingat what all these other people are doing
and saying, and they're so funny, and there's so cool and they go

(59:59):
to such cool places. Is thatyou post such cool pictures and I'm like,
I can't do that, and likeit feels like I'm missing out on
life and it's not a good thing, not a healthy thing. Well,
and what's interesting is there's a couplelayers there, right, Yeah, So
you have a fear of missing outon maybe what other people are doing,

(01:00:19):
and you see what they're doing andposting, just like you said. But
oddly enough, there's another layer inthat is, if you don't have Twitter
open, you fear that you're missingout on what is being said on Twitter.
Yeah, exactly right, Yeah, like something something's going on, some
breaking news stories out there, andI'm missing it because I'm not on Twitter.
And I have found I've been onTwitter for more in two decades.

(01:00:43):
I mean, that's is now thefirst place I hear about breaking news?
Really, it's not. I'm notwatching CNN. I'm not. You know,
with these streaming services, you know, you don't get like the network.
If you're watching ABC or whatever andsomething happens and they break in with
coverage and say this is super important, you have to pay attention. That

(01:01:04):
doesn't happen if I'm watching HBO Maxor streaming the Twins game on live or
whatever. So yeah, there's thatkind of disconnect I feel. Many of
the participants in the Icy study commentedthat the first few days of cutting back
were challenging, but after the initialpush, one student felt more productive and
in tune with life. Others sharedthat they were getting better sleep or spending

(01:01:27):
more time with people in person.Imagine that human contact, face to face
interactions. It's wild, I know, but yeah, but this is another
thing that I find myself caught upin when I think about social media.
Is that in my head Because I'mnot a particularly outgoing person. I'm not
like constantly texting or calling people orchecking in on the humans in my life,

(01:01:52):
even though I should be. Itend to just let social media do
that. So somebody posts, hey, I got a new job, I'm
going here or doing this, andI'm like, okay, well, now
I am up to speed on theirlives. Their kids just finished first grade
or whatever, and now I knowwhat's going on in their life, and

(01:02:13):
I don't need to talk to them. That's obviously not true. It's there's
no there's no real substitute for actuallyreaching out, getting in contact with somebody.
Talking on the phone. Nobody talkson the phone anymore. I understand,
you know, even texting is probablybetter than using social media, but
even that there's still a bit ofa remove there because you're not actually speaking

(01:02:34):
to people. And then there's thewhole concept of actually getting together in person,
which I know is has been difficultat times in the last few years.
And you know, somebody like mewho's I know, it's hard to
believe a guy who is so awesomeand cool on the radio is not so
awesome and cool in real life. But that's kind of where it happens.

(01:02:55):
Yeah, I need to get outof my shell a little bit and not
rely on social media so much toto stay in contact with people. I
know a great way to find outhow to get in contact with people,
and that's with our friend to KevinBurke from Discover Aims, and he is
going to join us next here onNewstalk fourteen thirty KASI eight forty seven On
Newstalk fourteen thirty KS as we doevery Thursday, at this time, we're

(01:03:16):
joined by our friend from Discover Ames, which Kevin Burke. Kevin, good
morning, Good morning, Dave. How are you. I'm well glad that
you are along. You know,I think it was a week ago.
Two weeks ago, we were Scottand I were filling in from now.
We were talking about the attempt ofrag Bry organizers to set a Guinness World

(01:03:37):
Record for most participants in a bicyclingevent or something something along those lines.
We saw today. I don't knowif you saw this, Kevin, but
Scott and I were talking about thisearlier this morning. Apparently they're not going
to try for that record anymore, which is kind of yeah. I did
see that. I knew that Ragbywas having some challenges with that, and

(01:03:58):
so I wasn't too awful prize. But I still feel that they're probably even
though it's not a Guinness Book ofWorld Record attempt, I still think they're
probably going to set a record fora number of writers because they do keep
track. I think they have thestate troopers that actually track how many writers
are on the road between each ofthe overnight towns. And so I think

(01:04:23):
somebody said their record would they hadsaid it in back in nineteen and I
can't remember what leg it was,but I wouldn't be surprised if their own
record gets broken, even though it'snot a Guinness Book of World Records that's
right. Well, we can putit on the Guinness people. It's there,
it's their faults. It won't berecognized as the one of their world
records, but we're going to claimit as their own. Of course,

(01:04:43):
I bring it up because that's theidea, is to try to set that
record officially on the twenty six,the day after they stop in Aims,
and on the twenty six is theday that everybody goes from Aims to Des
Moines. So you know, we'rewe want to be part of that absolutely,
and we welcome people to visit Aimsand we've got a pretty good plan
in place for those that will bespending the evening with all the different campgrounds

(01:05:08):
and still working on housing. It'sprobably one of the pieces where we need
to Aims residents to help us withif you're willing to give up a bedroom
or a basement or your backyard. We've got a lot of a lot of
requests from riders looking for places tostay other than the campgrounds that we have
designated. So but you know,I think that the plans that we have

(01:05:30):
in place for those that will bedropping riders off or that will be dropping
leaving their car here biking down toDes Moines. I think we've got some
pretty good plans in place, andwe actually have a town hall a week
from tonight. A week from today, we have two town halls that will
be at City Hall that will beannouncing just kind of a lot of our
plans for rag Bryce and that oneof them will be at one o'clock and

(01:05:55):
then another one at six o'clock nextThursday at City Hall. Are interested,
they can check that out to hearall of our plans and what we're expecting.
All right, we got that,We got that on the calendar.
Now what else is on the calendarcoming up here? In addition to rag
Ride Corps. You know this weekend, there's there's just a hot ton happening

(01:06:17):
this weekend with June teams happening.Uh, there's going to be festivities happening
at Banshell Park on Saturday from noonto four thirty where they've got live music
and food, trucks and crafts andall kinds of things. But a part
of that is also the airport renamingceremony, which will be Saturday morning.

(01:06:39):
For those that aren't familiar, Thecity had had a lot of discussion about
renaming the airport from Ames Municipal Airportto the James Herman Banning Ames Municipal Airport,
and so they will have a specialceremony on Saturday. And James Herman
Banning was aviated groundbreaker that had flownhere in Aimes. He actually had a

(01:07:08):
plane that was called Miss Aims andhas a very strong history as a African
American in Ames in the twenties, back even when Jack Price was here,
and so the airport was named afterhim, and we've done a lot of

(01:07:28):
big displays out there and that willground or that ceremony will be at ten
o'clock on Saturday, and that's kindof an extension of the Juneteenth festivities that
they're going to have. But thenalso on Saturday, the Ames History Museum
will have a groundbreaking ceremony too withtheir new expansion of the museums there in

(01:07:50):
the Ames Pantorium. So I'm reallyexcited about what that future is going to
be for the Ames History Museum them. Yeah, Saturday is a tremendously a
busy day with the airport renaming andthe History Museum as you mentioned, and
then the uh the Juneteenth Celebration atBanshell Park Saturday afternoon. If you can't

(01:08:13):
find anything, oh, by theway, a farmer's market still you know,
happening as it does every Saturday.I mean, if you can't find
something to do this weekend, you'renot trying. Yeah, yeah, that's
for sure. There is something foreverybody this weekend. Uh. You know,
even Raymand Garden has the Rose Showthis weekend. And then with Sunday
being Father's Day, Father's Day,fathers getting free to Ryman Gardens on Sunday,

(01:08:36):
So that's kind of a unneat thing. But then also Actors has their
local production produced musical pump Boys andDinettes that'll be on Friday and Saturday,
and then they've got more performances nextweekend as well. So there there's definitely
a lot happening this weekend. Weshould also mention too, since we mentioned

(01:08:59):
June tenth, the official the ceremonieskind of actually gets started on Friday Tomorrow.
There's an event at the Public Librarywith Louisa Jagger, who actually wrote
a biography of James Herman Banning.Yeah, that's correct. Yeah, that
will be at the Games Public Libraryat four o'clock. And then even Friday

(01:09:20):
night that they have it will bea movie and I'm not clear yet on
what that movie will be at RooseveltPark and outdoor movie that they'll be showing,
but obviously it'll have ties to Juneteenthas well. So yeah, a
lot happened and with that, andI also want to mention that one of

(01:09:41):
the events that we have host annuallyand that we work with as USA Track
and Field Iowa, they're hosting thestate meet. It's normally at Piowa State
Complex over at Cyclone Sports Complex, but with the construction that they're doing on
the insuield for soccer, it's goingto be at Ames High and that brings
hundreds of competitors and visitors to games. And they're going to be at ames

(01:10:02):
High on Saturday and Sunday for theState USA Track and Field Meet. So
we've got a lot of visitors anda lot of things happening. And just
a note on that that movie night, as you mentioned, Friday Tomorrow night
at Roosevelt Park eight o'clock, they'reshowing if I'm not mistaken, uh,
Black Panther Raconda Forever. Oh okay, it's fitting and I'm sure we'll get

(01:10:24):
a lot of people out there tosee, you know, big blockbuster movie
right right. So, and theyalso I'll point out to if there's rain
and the forecast Saturday unfortunately, andso if if rain spoils the Juneteenth celebration
that schedule for Saturday at Benchell Park, they're going to move it to the
Ames Community Gym in City Hall.Oh all right, I'm trying to help

(01:10:45):
you out here, Kevin. Yeah, well, you're doing great. We're
here for each other. And that'swhy he was probably working off of our
website and I'm working off on mynotes, Dave. So so that's I
got. I got all kinds oftabs opening everybody. But our web site,
discover aims dot com has a greatcalendar and you can see all the
things that we've talked about in muchmore, you know, this weekend too,

(01:11:09):
there's just tons of live music. And that's the one thing I've talked
with Mell about before too. It'sjust that it's uh, it's so it's
awesome to see more venues in morelocal talent performing whatever, whether it's country
music or blues or you know, cover bands, whatever. There's just so

(01:11:29):
many opportunities. You've got the municipalband Plan tonight and then Aims on the
Half Shell tomorrow night, and thenjust a lot of places like Prairie Moon
or Roosevelt or Alluvial that have entertainmentand local acts performing. And we should
also mention too, I mean it'snot the events that Discover Aims talks about

(01:11:54):
and promotes. Uh, They're notjust limited to the city of Aims itself.
I mean there's always something going onover Lists have an oaks and you
know between here and Boone and folksand Boon have events and folks around you
know, Slater in Nevada and StoryCity. They're all kind of part of
the uh, the activities that happenin our area that are part of Discoverings.
That is correct. And actually Iwas just visiting yesterday with Chris Blocker

(01:12:17):
are partners over with the Boon CVVAnd actually I'm heading out in about five
minutes when we finish up to goto the Iowa Arboretum. They've got a
groundbreaking on a new activity and attractionthat they're going to have a treehouse attraction
is going to be multiple treehouses connectedwith rope bridges and all kinds of stuff

(01:12:40):
for adults and kids and all allabilities, so it's kind of a cool
attraction that they've got over there. And another way Discoverings can help us out.
And you've got so many places listedthere for restaurants and shopping. You
know, you want to find dadthe perfect Father's Day gift. You go
there, you'll find the story you'relooking for. Oh, that's for sure.

(01:13:01):
You know. We've got so manyunique stores. Obviously the box stores,
but just so many locally owned businessesDowntown Man North, Graham Mall too,
don't forget about. So there's alot of places locally and we do
encourage people to shop local to supportour local businesses. Kevin, I believe

(01:13:26):
you will reunite with Mel next Thursday, but as always, we appreciate your
time with us. I'm happy, thank you very much. Yes, great
to have you as always. Andone way or another, weather Mels here
or it's it's us, it'll beuh. Kevin Burke joining us from Discover
Aimes next Thursday morning. To lookahead to that weekend as well, I'm
sure it'll be just as busy.So thank you so much for your time,

(01:13:48):
