Many of us think of hives as a short-term allergic reaction—they are itchy and uncomfortable but usually gone in a couple of hours or a few days. But for nearly 1.7 million people in the US, hives are chronic and unpredictable. This condition is called chronic spontaneous urticaria, or C-S-U, and it causes recurring hives and itch that last longer than 6 weeks and have no known cause.
