Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another episode of I Tell You What in
the end, I guess for the Grammys last night, there's
a lot of people that are really you know, and
I get it. Man. It's like it's like politics and sports,
same and music country music. You become a fan of someone,
you love someone, you want them to win in a
big way, and you defend them to the end. So Beyonce,

(00:22):
I mean, it created a stir. Here's one of the
most amazing singers, performers in the music industry ever, Beyonce,
and she comes in not known for country music. She
I mean, I know that everyone says that everybody there
shouldn't be a lane and everything like that, but I
mean there's some in country music that have just like

(00:44):
Hank Williams country music, right, Hank Williams Senior is country music.
Hank Williams Juniory jazzed it up a little bit here
and there for the most part country music. I mean,
just a couple of examples. Laney Wilson to me is
country music. And Beyonce comes in and wins Best Country Album,
and boy, Facebook, look because I just made a statement.
Beyonce just won Best Country Album, and the whole world

(01:07):
blew up and went after it, and I guess in
the end, I don't know the whole system with the
Grammys and everything. I'm not really familiar with how it
all works or who is behind it, or who votes
and who doesn't. It's always been a little kind of

(01:27):
above the phrase. I don't know if that's the right terminology,
maybe a little outside the box. So some of the
people that have won Grammys in the past, you kind
of get a headshake or like, whoa what? I like
Beyonce's album and all the nominees, Hire Chris Stapleton, love
it Deeper well, Casey Musgraves, it's Casey Musgraves. F one trillion,

(01:48):
post Malone love it, great album, very country. If I mean,
I don't know what to call this anymore. I mean,
can we call it to me? That's country? And F
one trillion is the best album title in the history
of album. I mean, it just doesn't give much crueler
than that. We're all win. Landy Wilson absolutely love it
song for song, But who are we to say who

(02:09):
wins what? Especially, I guess when it comes to the Grammys,
and is there something in there that just gets makes
people talk a little bit between the CMAS, the Grammys,
the ACMs, they're all a little bit different. But is
this a statement that's being made. What's being said here?
Is it because she wasn't She didn't. She was snuffed
out of the CMA's as far as nominations or wins.

(02:29):
So the Grammys come in and like, hey, you are
Best Country Album. I mean, that's what a lot of
people say, I should say, a lot of people are speculating.
I don't even like to go there. I don't like
to go too intent if I don't know who knows
what intent is in people. Nobody knows my intent. I
don't know yours.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, yeah, I think it's tricky Beyonce, like you said,
she I mean, she's a living legend. She's amazing, she's
so talented, and she has won a lot of very
very well deserved awards for the work that she does.
But I think that for her to win Best Country
Album is just a little bit tough for me. And
then Album of the Year. This is the first time
that she's ever won Album of the Year. It is
for her country album. And the thing is, it's just like,

(03:06):
I don't know. I think maybe the uber Beyonce. Fans
liked her country album, but other than that, it didn't really.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Do much to resonate as much.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
I don't everyone else we did, We played her, we
played Texas, Hold Them, but I just feel like her
songs on that album they didn't. Not many of them
really win anywhere other than Texas, like that one did to.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Me, like, is it better than see? This is where
it's all subjective and who are we to I guess
in the end, who are we to say? Everybody's allowed
an opinion? For sure, I don't think anybody should be
trampled on for their opinion. But like to me, like
Whirlwind to me is like, if you're to ask me personally,
kind of a no brainer there. Yeah, Whirlwind was like

(03:50):
from Landy Wilson was like, I mean, from as far
as this list, and I think there's a lot of
other people that should have been in there with their
albums that weren't, But on that particular looking at it,
Worldwood just kind of would be my go to. But
I'm far more familiar with it, and I've talked to
Laney Wilson, and I'm not saying that as a name dropper,
but I guess you know, maybe there is more of
a bias and we play in country radio a ton

(04:12):
of Laney Wilson. I mean, she is strong for our format.
People love her. It's far more than we played Beyonce
Yes or Casey musk Graves post Malone. It could be
a tie there, right.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
If you want to talk about like a cultural impact
of an album that really like made waves, Post Malone's
album did a lot in the last year. It's up
there too, so it's like it's just tough. I mean,
I don't really feel like Cowboy Carter made that much
of an impact on the genre of country music on
people in general in terms of streaming numbers. But the

(04:45):
reality is none of that matters, because all it is
is they have people that are Grammy voters, that are
industry insiders or whatever, and they're the ones that choose
these awards and vote on them, and so you're really
just at the behest of whatever they think. Not necessarily
country music people. They're just people who for whatever reason,
they are Grammy voters and they have that say, and

(05:07):
it's kind of that is just what decides it. But
also beyond the country genre, the fact that that her
album that that Cowboy Carter won Album of the Year
against artists like Sabena Carpenter, who her album. If we're
looking outside genre, the genre of country music, Sabena Carpenter
had a huge year. I mean Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift's

(05:28):
album was huge, Billie Eilish, There's in like Chapel Roan,
those albums were huge, and it is crazy to me.
Beyonce's album just didn't do what those albums did this year,
and that's crazy.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
So at least may in our side of it, not
all jumped on that.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
If you're a Beyonce fanah, of course you're happy. If
you're a Swift fan, you're not happy. Like so if
you're specifically fans of them. But just in terms of
like songs that were just everywhere, I will.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Say few people put on better performances and sing better
than Beyonce.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Beyonce is one of the most talented vocalists of our all. Yeah,
and that's and that's just a fact.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
But I just I don't deserve country album but it
does because the gravity said that and that's the way
it is.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yeah, that's just you know what it is.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
You don't always like the results. People don't like who.
Some people don't like who just became president. Some people do.
Some people can't stand the Kansas City Chiefs. Some people
can't live without them, most of them in Kansas City.
Philadelphia Eagles pretty much the same thing. Yeah, you know,
Kansas City people don't like him because they went too much.
Philly people don't like him because well it's Philly. Yeah,

(06:43):
but it is. It is what it is. And she won.
And we basically said nothing in seven minutes, which is
the point, because there's nothing. There's nothing you can do. Yeah,
I mean it is. It's what happened. And I don't
know the system. And you know, if I had some
kind of Grammy voter on here something to explain stuff
a little bit more. Or is it just sometimes it

(07:05):
just seems like in any year, there's somebody that pops
in here and it's like, okay, who's out to do what?
You know? I'm not even saying in this case, it
just seems like sometimes there's something in there. It's like, wait,
what who's that? What album was that? It's like a
lot of movies that you know, win Oscars and stuff.
I've never heard of that my entire life. And four

(07:26):
people saw it, but that's the best one. Yeah, So okay,
thank you for listening, just seven minutes and thirty four
seconds of nothing but something.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Our thoughts kind of yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
But you have to be careful what you say nowadays too.
You know, people like to bring everything into the picture
and all that kind of stuff, and it's like, it's
got nothing to do with that. It's just like where
you know, if Laney Wilson won pop album, if she
did one, if she did a pop album here in
the next year, I'd be like, come on, but unless
it's really good, I don't know. I see, I don't know.
I can't picture it. I can't see Lacey Wilson, Lacey Wilson,

(08:02):
Lady Wilson doing a pop album. I can't really envision that.
I can't really picture it. Not saying she couldn't, but
if she won next year, then oh who am I
to say? Again?

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Yeah, I have no issue with genre crossing, and you know,
an artist trying pop and an artist trying country, I
have no issue with that. I think it's great when.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Top comes in next year and wins pop album and
beats Taylor Swift.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
I'd be surprised by that one because that top seems
so true to country. But it's his choice if you
want to do that. I just it's not my issue
as them like people crossing around genres, that's totally fine.
I would have totally been pleased with post Malone winning
something last night.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
We've gone well over a minute now. On top of
our seven and a half minutes of nothing, we've added
another minute and twenty to that. So thank you for
listening to this episode of I Tell You By the Way.
We never even mentioned that Beyonce and Miley Cyrus won
Best Country Dual Performance in this podcast. It's like, that's brilliant. Yeah, off,
it's brilliant, but it's kind of impressive, something you'll always
