Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another episode, Uh I tell you what, featuring
an ex singing Minnesota Viking. Hello, dude, I don't know
how I'm gonna get through this call without calling you
by your dad's name. Your dad was a household name
in football for me. I loved your dad.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
That well, I love you too. I think you're great.
Your dad can't sing a note. I'm sure you can't, right,
I mean.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hey, that's true. My dad definitely is tone death. I'll
say that is he.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hey, can I ask real quick, who's faster? Right now?
Are you faster? Is he faster?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Oh? For sure? Me, it's not even close.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
I can't picture your dad getting beat by anybody. He
was just dude. That guy was like a like a
utility knife. He was like lightning back in the day.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
He was he was. He was pretty legendary.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
No, are you faster than him at his fastest?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yes? Oh for sure. He'll tell you that too.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
No way, I did not know that.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Oh yeah for sure. He You know, we got different
a little different games. But I was definitely a speed
guy for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
And it's kind of cool because you're one of us.
You're still I mean, once a Viking, always a Viking.
And you're coming back, yep to where it all started.
I mean you first headlined here at First Avenue. That
was what like three years ago? Two years ago?
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, yes, I think almost three years.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Almost two years ago. Yeah, and you're coming back now
to the Green Room on December twenty seventh, So that's
gonna be pretty sweet. Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Hey, I'm I'm pretty excited, man, I'm super excited to
be back. I'm actually here in town right now for rehearsals,
and I leave for Christmas and I come back. So
when I come back, I'm guns blazing. Baby. Let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
There you go, Yeah, there you go. What involves the rehearsals?
It sounds like you're like, it's not a play, is it?
This is gonna be you at a show?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Right? Yeah? No, this is not a play. No, I'm
basically just I'll be I'll be seeing a lot of
my original music with a band, and it'll be it'll
be a party. It's pretty up tempo. I dance a lot.
You know, it's two days after Christmas, so you know,
if people want to spend their their Saturday after Chriss
with a with an ex Viking, and see him make
(02:03):
a fool of himself on stage. It'll be pretty pretty entertaining.
So what was more nerve wracking for you? Auditioning for
American Idol or playing in the NFL. Oh, my gosh,
auditioning for American Idol for sure, not even close one
thousand percent American Idol. Why Well, you know, I think
with football, you know, I grew up, you know, my
(02:24):
dad played for so long, so it was like everything
I knew, like it was like second nature, like muscle
memory for me to step out, you know, once I
got to the league or even in college in a
big stadium, like it just you know, came to me
because it's all I've ever known. But with music, I
you know, I left the Vikings and went straight onto
American Idol weeks later, and I had never done music.
(02:45):
I'd never taken any classes, No nobody in my family's
musical so it just felt so out of the ordinary
for me. And there was no muscle memory, no reps
of practice. It was just like, wait, I have no
idea what's about to happen. So it was more of
like a god saying, you know, like it was. It
was a lot scarier to not have those reps, you know,
to lean on in the in those high pressure moments.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
So you're more afraid, if I have this right, you're
more afraid of the singing and the dancing around and
that kind of stuff whatever takes on idol. Then getting
hit by a three hundred and fifty pound defensive tackle
knocking you out and concussing you have, possibly taking your
knee out, You're.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Definitely for sure, one thousand percent, no question in my mind.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I think you're funnier that you should. You may want
you may want to incorporate some comedy. Dude, this is gold.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Hey, it happens naturally. I don't try, it just comes out.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
So this whole thing, did it start when you were
singing on video for your grandmother? Is that where it
kind of all it?
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Did? I mean pretty much? You know? I yes, honestly,
that's when I, you know, kind of caught a following online.
I would say, as I posted that video, my my
teammates at the VICE and he was like, you should
start TikTok, And I was like, oh man, I've heard
terrible things about that app but I was like I
was hurt, and I was up in Minnesota, far from family.
I was like, might as well start playing guitar and singing.
(04:11):
So I'm kind of that's me, Like I just try anything,
and I just fell in love with it. So I
pranked my grandma a couple of videos into creating a
profile and it got like thirty million views and the
next thing you know, I got hundreds of thousands of
followers who who were supporting me, and then I just
had to figure it out from there.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Did your grandmother ever reap the benefits financially from this
or did you keep it from her? In all honesty,
I won't tell any about it.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
No, she shes the real star of the show. I'm
telling you. After her American Idol debut these she I mean,
people recognize her all the time and she soaks it up.
So like, yeah, that was me. I'm like, whoa, Okay,
now are you liking this?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
So I didn't look at the lyrics of falling into you?
But is that song about your grandma?
Speaker 2 (04:53):
No? That was about an ext girlfriend that we don't
talk about.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Okay, thank god. Okay, so that's over. Now do you
even sing that? You're still saying it though, don't you.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Uh yeah, yeah, I'll I'll sing it from here here
today a little bit. But uh, I have a lot
of new pop country tunes since moving to Nashville that
I would say be out a lot of you know,
a lot of music that's on on Spotify. Besides a
few recent ones were me just figuring out how to write.
So there's a lot of unreleased demos that I'll be
singing at on the twenty seventh at the Green Room
(05:24):
that are definitely my best music yet. That'll be really
really I'm excited for for fans to hear them.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Will any of your buddies from the Vikes be there
at that show?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Well, you know, my close friend Adam Adam Thielan is
supposed to be there with the whole family, but you know,
now he's over in Pittsburgh, so that's that's that's tough.
But yeah, I'm sure I haven't talked too much. I
talked to Adam pretty much every day, but I don't
there's a lot of the guys that I was there with, actually,
don't you know, are have kind of dispersed to other teams.
But you know, I'm actually talking with the Vikings today
(05:56):
doing some interviews with them, So I'm sure some of
them will come out cool.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Nice dude, We're looking forward to it. This looks like
a really good show. The green Room. The green Room,
December twenty seventh, Like you said, a couple of days
after Christmas.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, and a it's it's early though. It starts at
like the doors at like six o'clock. It starts at
six thirty, so it's like, you know, it's you're not
getting home too late. You know, it's not a traditional
concert where you're getting home super late. You know what
I'm saying. This is fantastic for the film.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Told me, well, not just that, but is that because
your Grandma's going to be there.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
I mean, hey, that's exactly why she got to go
to bed on her on bedtime. She doesn't even care.
She said, you gotta start this thing early. I got
to be in bed by nine to thirty.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Big guys, dude, I love it. You're the best here.
Before I let you go, if you ever met Luke
Combs or Eeric Church or Scotty McCreery from Carolina Country,
since you're from down there.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
I've met Luke on passing, but I haven't met anybody else.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
See how to your grandma for us. You know what
I mean, she's the big n Well, for a she'll.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Be enlightened that she was talked about on the radio
station today. She'll be very excited. Guys.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
All right, but well listen, stay safe for the next
week and a half, enjoy your rehearsals, and we'll see
at the green room December twenty seven. Thanks for chiming in.
