T twenty Cricket World Cup. Now on the show where
the black Caps kick off their campaign against Afghanistan. Saturday morning,
New Zealand Time, eleven thirty out of Guyana, joining us
SO on the CSB this morning out of the black
Caps campus. Darryl mt Your morning, Daryl, Hey, how you
going very well? Thank you? Just two sleeps away from
kicking off the tournament. You've been involved in a few
(00:27):
of these World Cups now, Darryl, do you still get
the same sort of nerves and excitement as you did
for the very first one back in twenty nineteen.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, Look, it's really exciting. It's a different part of
the world. World Cup wise never played over here although
a number of series now and it's yeah, there'd be
an exciting challenge ahead.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
You had to look at the venue. I mean, it's
not the easiest place to get to, is it.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah. It takes around two days to get to, so
there's plenty of hours flying. But look, it's definitely a
different part of the world. The conditions are a lot
different to what we used to and that's that's the
exciting challenge of taking on some of the world's best
teams and these conditions as it challenges your game and
helps you find ways hopefully win games of.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Cricket, and for the New Zealand team, for the Black
Caps a little bit on the back foot because no
warm up games before the before this game have there been.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
I look, that's the nature of international schedules is there's
a number of guys who've been away at the IPL
for the last few months playing a lot of cricket
and yeah, with us having I guess around Robin Gain
towards the end of the first week of the tournament,
we would have been playing our wine up game two
weeks before the first game. So the prep's been really good.
We've had some great training sessions over here and looking
(01:38):
forward to it.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
And you personally talking about the IPL, you've come off
a season there, how do you enjoy that experience?
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Yeah, look, it's an amazing experience. Firstly, to be part
of CSK and the crowds that that that club, our
franchise has finding them around the around the country is
pretty amazing. And to experience it and to play a
role with in that side was really cool. And you
really enjoyed my.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Time playing out there on those ovals in India. I
mean the atmosphere, the noise must have been phenomenal.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah, our home games, I've never experienced noise like at you. Yeah,
the whistles is it's incredible and as had my family
over there for a number of weeks as well, so
it's awesome for them to experience it and see what
cricket's like over there.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
So for this T twenty World Cup, it's being stretched
from North America to South America. Do you still get
the sense that you're involved in a World Cup? I mean,
is there a buzz around?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah? Looks. I guess that's the challenge of this World
Cup is every single island has different conditions, and then
you add America in there as well, which is totally
different wickets which we've never experienced. So it's been able
to adapt as quick as you can to those different conditions.
And I guess understanding that, especially in the West Indies,
that it's not always going to be pretty. But he's
(02:53):
got to find ways to keep ticking the ball over,
the runs over with the bat and keep trying to
put pressure on with the.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Ball Afghanistan's Saturday Morning New Zealand time. They've just come
off at one hundred and twenty five run win over Uganda.
So they're a team that's constantly improving over the years.
What are they doing well?
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, look, they're a very good team. Now they've got
a number of guys that playing the IPL and play
key roles in those teams. So it's gonna be a
great challenge for us and on a guy on a
wicket which we now will turn and that's something that
we're really looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
I was just going to ask you about the wickets
over there, playing in Guyana. What are the West Indie pitchers,
what do they normally bring?
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, every island's totally different. So that's the thing is
we're going to number of guys who have played CPL
and understand the conditions and it's been really good I
guess the last five six days now to be here
in Guyana and understand what the surfaces are doing in
the nets and hopefully that plays similar when they get
out in the middle.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Devin Conway Fanellen back from injuries as well. Everybody all
aok on the injury front.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, look, I'm not the first but from what I
can see, everyone's looking pretty good. So yeah, like it's cool,
I guess to have a full strength squad and everyone
ready to go and to get stuck in for our country.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Well, good luck. We wish you the very best of luck, Darryl.
Thanks for joining us on the show this morning. Cool cheers,
thanks for having me, Daryl Mitchell out of the black Caps.
Interesting you know that all these games being played around
not just the Caribbean, but also North America and South
America's because Guyana actually is in South America's North Atlantic coast,
which is a rather interesting spot. They've got a population
(04:32):
of about eight hundred and eighty seven hundred and twenty
six people. Fascinating and mark the chooed you for the
black Caps. They're a reasonably easy Paul, aren't they?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yes and no depends, so yes, they're sort of the
best and worst thing about the competition as obviously no
warm up games, which is a bit different from what
we used to but we've got our two hardest games
of the pool plays straight away, so as we heard
from Daryl, then Afghanistan the Saturday first ball being bowled
at eleven thirty, and then next Thursday, at just after
(05:03):
lunchtime twelve thirty. We've got one of the co hosts,
West Indies. Obviously always very difficult to play the West
Indies at their home turf. Fans are crazy and they've
I think they've won two T twenty World Cup, so
this is their game. This is they definitely love the
the T twenty format of the game. And then yeah,
they've expanded the competition to let in these sort of
(05:24):
trying to make the sport a bit bigger. So yeah,
I would be very surprised if we've ever played a
game against Uganda before. But that's what we'll be doing
next Saturday, just after lunchtime twelve thirty. And then bright
and early on Tuesday morning of the eighteenth of June,
Papa New Guinea. Who knew who knew that they had
a cricket side. That's Brighton nearly. As I mentioned two
thirty five, and the four things go to plan, we'll
(05:47):
be playing into the we'll get into the top eight.
But yeah, all sorts of funny like different teams. You've
got Canada and United States who kicked off the tournament.
You've got Scotland and England who played yesterday, who ended
up drawing that game because of the but Oman and
n Nibia in that Group B, we've got, as I mentioned,
Papua New Guinea, Uganda and Group D along with South
Africa and Sri Lanka and Bangladesk. There's Nepal in the Netherlands.
(06:10):
So cricket finally, it's taken a wee while, but it
is becoming a global game. And we've got a couple
of games on today as well. There's one bright and
early this morning. India just demolished Ireland and Ireland all
out for ninety six and India they got that with
these eight wickets and forty six deliveries remaining at eleven thirty,
(06:30):
a big one for our poul Uganda and Papua New Guinea.
We'll get to see what those two teams are like
that to eleven thirty. And then at twelve thirty today
Australia and Oman play their first game of the tournament.
We'll see what Australia can do as well. But yeah,
it's an interesting TA twenty World Cup. It kind of
feels like it's not really on you look at the stadiums.
(06:51):
There's one in New York, there's one in Dallas, and
then there's all over the Caribbean. As you mentioned, it's
South America as well. There's it's very very rare to
have an expanded tournament and that's sort of dotted all
over the sort of the world map. But nonetheless, let's
hope the black Caps. We've come second a couple of
times at this Tea twenty World Cup. We've had a
couple of semi finals. I think we're four straight semi finals.
It will be it will be awesome if we can
(07:13):
raise some silver, especially with our team slightly getting older now,
the likes of Trent Bolt, came Williamson, they're there well
into their thirties now, they're not any spring chickens anymore. So, Yeah,
the golden generation of New Zealand cricket, it's starting to
come to ourn ends. It'd be nice to get at
least a World Cup. We've got that World Test Championship
in the cupboard. Let's get at TEA twenty World Cup.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Nice, all right, look forward to that match on Saturday morning,
eleven thirty. It's this coming Saturday, the first
