Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm on the show now to catch up with Murray
Deecer and talk about Murray Deeca's Sporting Lives podcast on
iHeartRadio or if you get your podcast. He joins us
this morning, Mordy Dicks.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Good, Hey, how are you? Bj Very well?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Thank you. You have some great guests on your Sporting
Lives podcast. So who's the very latest one?

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Doctor John Mayhew this time. And we really did it
because of all the publicity associated with head knocks. Billy
Goeiiton suffering from CTE and they can only of course
ascertain that that was what he was suffering from after
you dead, which is said, so John's the person to ask,

(00:45):
being you know, the medical practitioner. I start off by
asking what the role of a sports doctor is and
we did it in two parts, really looking at elite
sport and then second very school, primary school and average sport.
You know, what can parents do? For example, everybody's talking

(01:07):
about the elite ones all the time, but you know,
do hit gear for example stop people from getting depression
and concussion or the answer is no? And you know,
do we need helmets? And his answer is no for that,
and he gives good reasons because of course John May
who was must have been well over a decade the

(01:30):
All Blacks doctor, and then of course he was with
the Warriors. He's still on the sideline. Whatever a league
team comes to from Australia, he looks after them over here.
And apart from that BK he's part of the New
Zealand Rugby Foundation and works extremely hard for them. And

(01:54):
that's an organization which looks after people who have had
serious knocks, looks after the family, all that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
And you and I as spectator sitting on the couch,
we see some horrendous head clash as head knocks in
rugby and rugby league. I mean, it is a very
very worrying and concerning thing, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
I was so questioned about him, and I think that
that helps to explain why there has been a drop
off in numbers playing the games, both those games, because
they are very physical games and somehow they've just got
to get the tackles down load. I watched the State
of Origin the other night and was horrified by that

(02:41):
big hit, but the referee was sensational. He didn't knuck around.
He just sent that guy off because it was so teerless,
so reckless, and yet the reaction of the rest of
the teammates of the New South Wales team was such
that they were very upset with the referee. The referee
did the right thing.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Your head knocks are real concern. What else did the
doc talk about?

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Talked about how to prevent injuries and what you could do,
particularly if you're a parent looking after your kids. He
talked about what any first aid should contain on the sideline.
He talked about the lessons we can have and teach
young people and how to warm up so that you
don't get all the muscular injuries which are so bad.

(03:31):
He talked about the need for coaches and parents to
work together with young people. And so, although we did
the piece on elite sportsmen, I'm really concerned because you know,
it's the injuries that happen at a lower level. They
don't get the expert treatment, they don't get straight away

(03:53):
to hospital or anything like that. So parents need to
listen to this to find out what to do.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Murray Dikas Sporting Lives. You've also caught up with a
very good friend of mine or man a young man
who have watched come right through the ranks. Scott Dixon.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Well, I loved talking to him, and you know, we
go back a long way. It was either you or
Sandy Merra that said to me, this is somebody you
should interview. And it was his first major interview that
he had done. And he came into the news crook
Z'd be studio. Never forget this, in jeans that had

(04:29):
acrease in them. They were so immaculately pressed. He had
a coat on, a sports coat on, and he was
absolutely immaculate, and he kept on talking about we and
from the moment that that all started, he was a
talk about his team. I realized that he was an
exceptional person. Now to interview him after all those years

(04:53):
and everything that he has achieved, it's an absolute privilege.
He is the ultimate prophet, isn't he? You know, it's
not a tag with him. There are some people who
are playing some sports that are called professionals because they've
got money. Professionalism is much more than that. It's about

(05:13):
showing your sport in the best possible light. It's about
integrity and it's about thinking about others. Scott Dixon has
all those qualities. I think he is unquestionably a great
New Zealander without a doubt.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Hey, Dig's nice to catch up mate. We'll do it
again soon. Have a great day.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Thank you for having me on VK.
