Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Country Sport, Breakfast Netball Sports session with the Vonn
Willering Go Gold Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Round nine Done and dusted, and it wasn't the closest
weekend as far as wins were concerned. There were wins
seventeen eighteen sixteen goals in all three games. Joining us
on the show this morning, former Silver Fan's Coaching Gold
Sport commentator Ivon Willering Morning.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Ivon, Yes, good morning. Yes, you indicated three blowout games,
you know, with that gold differentiation between year sixteen and eighteen,
which actually meant that the gap on the competition table
between the top two teams Pulse and Tactics and the
rest of them is widening rather than closing up. And
at this time of the season, surely everyone knows what
(00:43):
everyone else is playing like, and so you'd expect, you know,
the results to be a lot closer. And yes, there
are lots of injuries around as well, but even so, yeah,
I would have expected, certainly, certainly in the Puls Mystics game,
I thought that would have been a closer encounter.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, let's start with the Saturday game. First off, Northern
Stars finally get a win for this season, smashing the
steal sixty three forty six.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Unbelievable. Yeah, they really from start to finish they were
so dominant and still actually had fourteen less attempts at
goal and in the stars, but yeah, you could tell
the stars were there for business. Certainly, no rual of
bu Canon, no cramped and Crampton. I think we will
not feature again because she is now in the actual
lineup for the Giants. I don't think they'll have her
(01:31):
services anymore. But certainly, you know they started off and
at halftime it was thirty two twenty two, so already
a ten goal difference there, So yeah, they were in
the meaning business. And a player that stood out for
me and I actually think she did actually get Player
of the game was Cape Burleigh, and I thought that
she played well throughout. She's actually had a really good season.
(01:51):
But she took a number of intercepts and even when
she didn't get the intercept and say she was early,
she retreated really quickly to obviously help a teammate. So
the Burly Fowler combination in that circle certainly is picking up.
And Wilson again dominant under the post forty nine out
of fifty two and shared the logo with Mala Sala
(02:12):
and Forkner Malissella in fact got ten out of twelve,
so she did pretty well. But for the Steel yeah,
they're shooting. Let them down. I mean obviously they had
left ball going into them, but no, no, twenty one out
of twenty six in Heffnin only fourteen out of twenty one.
But they bought on Timu and she actually got eleven
out of eleven, so they must look to her for future.
(02:35):
And this is where some of the teams, and still
in particular, they're looking around and there's no stability in
their team because you know, players are just not stepping
up from week to week. But for the start, it
was really cool. Obviously the win you think it was
that they won the championship. So and I'm going, oh,
unless you'll get the media off your back with you know,
(02:58):
but they had the sisters Hollywood and Lisa on the court,
and Holly's from the Comets, and the Comets actually have
provided that's in the NNL competition and they've actually provided
a few players now into the A and Z, so
you know, players that sit in that development league underneath.
You know, if they play well and they play well
as a team, they do get opportunity, especially now before
(03:20):
these injuries are around. So yes, she made the most
of our opportunity. But Stars were never going to be
beaten in that game sixty three forty six, So you
know that's yeah, I was disappointed, obviously. I thought Stell
was starting to play better, and that's what the whole
weekend was about. Actually, you know, teams that we thought
were going to be up there, Yeah, actually they had
(03:43):
blowout games against them.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Not a great birthday party for the Western boy Pritty Magic.
On Sunday at twenty fifth birthday, the Tactic smashed them
sixty forty two to stop the Magic two game winning streak.
Does this show does show how much the gap is
from the top two teams to the rest of the field.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Well, unfortunately, isn't it? You know, like a yeah, I
thought that was going to be a close game. I
did predict Tactics to win it because of their experience,
they know how to win, and they're just playing better
and better each week, and they they will be in
the top two, you know, without a doubt in my
opinion and that. But yeah, it was a situation where Magic,
(04:21):
like in the past, you could see they were there growing,
they were getting confident. I mean, they've got a wonderful
shooting circle and two year and the Kanasio, but their
other end of the court was also starting to gel
and I thought, you know, they were starting to get intercepts,
particularly Tuckerarungi a lot of intercepts there. Even Edgecombe was
taking intercepts at wing defense. But they were found wanting
(04:42):
in this game and yeah, celebrating twenty five years and
they had all these X players there. They were wearing
the gear from the twenty twelve team, I think when
they won, and you know, and in front of all
these people, and they just they just could not get
the ball into their shooters. And in part, yes, the
Watson Burger combination is growing in strength. I think that
(05:07):
whilst they're like, yeah, they do one on one defense,
but at least they're looking for intercepts. And it was
really good that their coach acknowledged the players that sit
outside as a wing defend center Sinclair, Lockatui and Poy
as well, because they set up these intercepts and often,
you know, the mid cook goes unrewarded because they're setting
up both on attack and defense. You know, for all
(05:29):
the rest of their players. But again it showed you
had done sitting on the bench, and I'm looking at
that go you wouldn't want to go without Bird, I mean,
you know, and that's no disrespected done. But point Bird
has slotted in so well with Selby record Bird stopped
thirty nine out of forty and Selby records eighteen out
of twenty. But she really she knows how to feed Bird.
(05:52):
And I think that combination is just so strong, and
so the Tactics will look at that and they want
to actually go in with this team obviously league leading
into the finals, but probably they will still be looking
obviously in the round still to come, rather than worrying
about what's happening in the finals. But what I did
enjoy in that game, and it's happened in other games
where when the team starts winning and well the Tactics
(06:16):
were winning forty two, thirty two or three quarter time,
so ten goals, the chances are you're going to win
the game. So you know, it's a situation where you
could often go into a comfort zone and the opposition
can come back, or the coach puts on some of
her lesser or less less experienced players out on court.
But Tactics won that last quarter eighteen to ten, so
(06:39):
it showed that they meant business from start to finish.
And what I enjoyed about that game is that they,
at least the Tactics were consistent throughout. But yeah, I
felt for the Magic because you know, they really wanted
to have a big celebration with everything, and that would
have just ticked the box if they won that game,
or even if they got a lot closer. But what
(06:59):
the score differential eighteen goals sixty forty two.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
You know, last night came upon the return of injured
shoot to Grayton. Wiki can't come quick enough for the
defending champions statistics after demoralizing fifty four to thirty eight
lost to the Pulse last night.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, and you can see it's almost now that they're
just waiting for her return. Listen, she has to be
back next week. Otherwise they are in big trouble because
you know, you've got a situation where Magic still only
sits one point behind, and that's what I was indicating Mystics.
I think around fifteen points, so that's like three wins
away from hitting the top two teams Pulse and Tactics.
(07:39):
So they'll be looking at that and you can almost
feel that they are waiting for her return. Will she
make a difference, Absolutely, she will, because not just from
her shooting, because if they've got no one to pass to,
they can just automatically bomb it into her, right, but
also just the confidence that she brings for the team.
But just going to that game, yeah, it was interesting
(08:01):
to watch it, and don't get I'm looking at it
play by play, but both teams made a number of substitutions.
But the difference was that Pulse made the substitutions. They
were tactical changes. They had a sharing role for the
goal attack position with Palacio and Marrow in there, and
then Yahoo finally the introduction of matu Arow and honestly,
(08:24):
the crowd went wild. She had she had limited time
out on court, you could tell, and she wanted admit
to her but you could tell she was nervous in that.
But she still managed to shoot four out of six
and the time that she was on court. But the
main thing was that really the Pulse were dominant throughout
and again Kirsten led that mid court. Absolutely she did.
(08:46):
And you know it was a situation where the encircled
defenders provided quality ball to the shooters. And I've heard
other people say that it's your defense work that wins
your games, and they've showed that again and again because
in this particular time, Salmon noose goal shooting for Polse.
She probably didn't have her best shooting stats. But what
I liked is that one they kept her on the court,
(09:09):
but she was very She's easy to feed and always
available and even when she missed, the next time she shoots,
and even if that's a long shot, she will have
an attempt at it, so she won't shy away from it.
And she ended up with forty out of forty eight.
So again the bulk of the student was done by Salmon.
But I looked at it and I'm going, yeah, Pulse
absolutely deserved the wind, But who were forte with that amount?
(09:34):
And yeah, I indicated with the mystics, I'm going, oh,
what can I say about the mystics? You know they
missed two the other she wasn't there and brought Kayla
Johnson into the equation and MICHAELA. Socklegebithon at the end
actually spoke about it that the reason they bought her
for her experience, and I totally understand that, you know,
(09:56):
and was almost like, well, we couldn't really call on
any other players on the n in our league because
they do need that experience going through the mid court.
But you got the situation, and we really promoted the
Glen Vwie combination in the shooters, and you know at
the start we when Grace Nowiki was no longer available,
we promoted them and they played well. They're still playing
(10:18):
that way, but the Troublers. Other teams now know exactly
how they play now without picking on them, though, you've
got a situation whereby it's also about the feeders. You know,
how they feed these players, because sometimes they were on
a one on one situation and I think the ball
could have gone into them, not over the top of
Kelly Jackson, but a situation where they play the ball around.
(10:41):
And when you look at it, the Pulse had sixty
nine attempts and the Mystics only had forty six attempts.
So yeah, yeah, But what I find interesting though, and this,
well I'll say nuts, but what I find interesting at
the end and Soglegs beats spoke and she was honest
and I have Nope, it's absolutely great. But basically they
(11:04):
talk about, you know, when they were asked what went wrong.
I find it interesting that often, and not just them,
but other teams as well, they have answers. You know,
we didn't stay to a game structure, or we didn't
have two people available and all this stuff, and I'm going, okay,
so why did you not make these corrections during the game?
Good question, And you know, and they're doing the same
(11:27):
thing and same if the umpire calls them for something,
will change it up. At this level, at the elite level,
that's what it is expected of players.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
I On, We've got to go, but appreciate your input.
Thank you so much.
