Speaker 1 (00:00):
Live commentary of Super Rugby Pacific with Habit Health, tackling
all your eggs and pains from Sport and Work on
gold Sport, your home for live commentary.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Yeah, semi finals of Super Rugby coming up on gold
Sport this weekend. We'll have commentaries of the Friday night
match of five past seven with the Blues and the Brumbies,
and then on Saturday afternoon four p thirty five Hurricanes
and the Chiefs joining a Hurricane Ceo heaven Le Morning.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Evan, Morning mate, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Oh great mate? What a season you've had. Back in January,
new coach, did you think you'd sort of be almost
basically top of the table number one seeds at the stage?

Speaker 1 (00:39):
I was certainly hopeful. I think we've got a great
squad and awesome coaches and staff in the background. I
certainly thought next year would be we'd be right up there.
So I think this year feels like a bonus to
be right at the top. You know, we always look
at reaching the semi finals home semi final as a

(01:00):
as a marker, so you know we've achieved that. But
I know the squad aren't feeling like they've achieved anything yet.
It's really obviously a massive game on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Clark laid Law's molded an amazing team. He's brought a
new look to the game in a way really for
your team, hasn't he Yeah, he has.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
He's you know, at the end of the day, that's
why we chose him. I think he's built on the
work that you know, Elfie was doing previously, but he's
obviously brought his own slant to it. You know. One
of the reasons why we appointed him was his experience
of building a culture and through care and connection, and

(01:40):
also his ability to work with Marl and PACIFICA players
and how he gets the best out of them and
how he relates to them. And it's just been it's
just been awesome. I mean, all the players, all the
players love him, and you know, it's just it's just
an exciting time to be around the place. And yeah,
as I said, we just can't wait for Saturday.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Four thirty five kickoff. It's almost unusual not a five
past seven game. Why the four thirty five?

Speaker 1 (02:09):
The previous week the quarterfinals, the team that topped the
group had the ability to choose their quarter final time,
so we chose four to thirty five on Saturday and
speaking to the Blue CEO, he would have done the
same thing if they'd qualified first. So quarterfinals locked away
semi finals. I'd assume that it would be Friday and

(02:30):
Saturday nights, but the Warriors play Saturday night, so obviously
Sky I have had some influence. They want people to
watch both, you know, which makes total sense. I think
the Warriors have the Storm and then a semi final
obviously Rugby, so two big fixtures. We're very happy with
the time. It suits. It suits us, suits the team,

(02:54):
suits our fans. You know, ticket sales are going really well,
you know, looking forward to the game.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Is it amazing to think, you know, a few years
ago you've never given any consideration to a Warrior's game,
would you, But suddenly now I thing sort of revolves
around that and your game as well. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
I think it's just a sign of the times really
in terms of Sky and they buy the rights for
these competitions and they don't want two fixtures up against
each other, and to be honest, to know, the defans,
so you know, it's it doesn't matter whether you're a
League fan or a Avy fan, A lot of people
will want to watch those two games, so having them

(03:34):
back to back it's great and you're not competing against
each other, and you know, you can go to the
Hurricanes game and then watch the other one on TV.
So that's what we're hoping people will do.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Have you had the fan support you've wanted this year?

Speaker 1 (03:51):
It's been okay on at the ground. I think engagement
in the Hurricanes has never been higher. Viewers, it is
up sixteen percent, I think, and you know, through social
media and every other sort of mechanism, it's incredibly buoyant.

(04:12):
You know, we're a popular team. We're doing some good
things off the field as well. But the crowds are
definitely down from what they were, certainly pre COVID. We've
had fifteen thousand for the last two weeks, you know,
final round robin against the Highlanders and then the quarterfinal
against the Rules, so you know, we'd obviously like to

(04:33):
get more, but you know, I think I think people
have a lot more choice these days. I think, certainly
in Wellington there are a lot of people that are
have lost their have lost their jobs. The economy is
pretty tight, so you know, some people don't have twenty
dollars to come to to come to a game, but

(04:55):
as they've already got Sky, they're going to watch it
on TV. So our job is to I have the
best possible experience at the stadium that we can and
now our marketing managers doing an awesome job to enhance
that experience. So yeah, I think you know, obviously, going
into the final series and reaching the semi finals, naturally

(05:18):
people come out of the woodwork and your phone starts
going a bit more than normal. But you know that's natural,
I think because people people are attracted to the big games.
You know, if the All Blacks played six Test matches
in Wellington, there wouldn't be the same intense interests for
all six games, particularly if they weren't against the best opposition.

(05:43):
So where as you look at the Bleederslow Cup or
South Africa, that's that's huge for the All Blacks in
any city of New Zealand. So when Chiefs come to town
for a semi final at Super Rugby, that's a that's
a pinnacle event that people want to be part of
and want to get down and support the Hurricanes phylically.
So yeah, and.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
You guys will be hoping that you beat the Chiefs
because I think you get a home final, don't you.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Yeah, we do, we do. We're not We're not looking
too too far past our those at the moment, I'll
tell you that. But yeah, that's that's what will happen
if we if we're able to beat the Chiefs. But
you know, they're awesome team they've got They're stacked with
high quality players. You know, they looked awesome in the
first half in their quarterfinals. So we're into no illusions

(06:27):
about what's coming.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
And you'll be hoping that Propterel Lomax comes back to
He's been up through injury for a while, isn't he he.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Has, Yeah, I think everyone's really hopeful that that'll be
you know, he'll be okay. Team gets announced tomorrow, so yeah,
I'm really hoping that he'll be okay. But Pasiliotossi has
done an awesome job at tighthead in his absence. Losing
Xavier new Mayor at the weekend, you know that's what happens.

(06:56):
I mean, the Blues have lost Patrick Tuopoto. So unfortunately,
when the games start happening, you do get injuries. So
it's just about how you how you cope really and
how you front up and how are the guys step up?

Speaker 2 (07:09):
We Levan, thanks for joining us this morning. Wish are
the best of luck against the Chiefs on Saturday afternoon,
four thirty.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Five kickoff pleasure. Thanks your Tom, and we'll

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Have a live commentary of that game, Piney calling it
Jason pine along with along with Thomas Aldrum and Matt
Buck that game four thirty five right here on gold Sport.
