Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're talking super rugby now on the show, and we've
made it to the final four. Friday Night Blues host
the Brumbies and then late Saturday afternoon it's the Hurricanes
and the Chiefs out of Wellington joining us on the
show this morning. Scrum coach for the Chiefs and a
farmer pretty close to Mystery Creek as well, Nick White.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Morning, Nick, How are you morning? How are you very well?
More importantly, how are you and the boys doing?
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
No, we're all good up here. Just obviously had the
first couple of days of training and boys were all
pretty excited and looking forward to the weekend, which would
be you know, it's going to be a great grand
occasion and a couple of good teams having a go
at each other.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
First up, last Friday night quarterfinal against the Reds. To
talk about that thirty one zeup at halftime, eventually scoring
six tries to three in the forty three to twenty
one victory. Is that one of the better performances of
the season.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah, I'd say it probably have to be our our
best performance of the season really that that half. It's
sort of been a little bit inconsistent most of the
year and play really well in patches and then aware
the furies and others, and but it's it's been perfect
timing actually, and I think probably just you know, just
keeping it simple, you know the you know with what
(01:20):
regy is, you know, you carry her clean, catch and
pass and make your tackles. It's amazing if you do
those simple things. What what can happen?
Speaker 1 (01:29):
The foot came off the gas a bit in the
second half. What did you put that down to?
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Oh, there's possibly a bit of that. But yeah, also,
you know, you're not going to go through a game
eighty minutes of having control of the game the whole time.
So the Red are a good side, so they were
always going to get their turn at having a crack
at us. And yeah, it was lucky, lucky enough that
we probably got out got out to enough and then
when they did score, if the times were able to
(01:57):
come back to so but no, it was was it
was a pleasing performance, especially heading into this week were
we're going to have to obviously go up a few
more gears to compete with the Hurricanes, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Did the boys have another gear in the cogs to speak?
Speaker 3 (02:15):
I certainly hope so. Otherwise it'll be last week. But no,
I mean, that's that's what it's all about. This kind
of the year is a great challenge. You know, Yes,
we've got to compete against these guys because the Hurricanes
have been along with the Close, the two teams that
have sort of set the standard right through the comp
and you know, the Hurricanes have got good boards, good
(02:37):
back play, a good style of foody, so you know,
there'll be the challenge for us to see if we can.
Actually we've been close both times, but yeah, it's not
much point being close. You've to get the one, that's
for sure. So no, it'll be, it'll be, it'll be good.
Always are looking forward to it, and you know it's
we're just going to go down there and put our
(02:58):
best foot board and and what will be will be.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
And health wise, did everybody make it out of the
quarterfinal and injured? No major concerns at all?
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Nah, not really, everyone's I mean I've said a couple
of times I think you know, the boys are dreaming
if they think they're going to wake up on Monday,
and this time of the year, you just got to
that's all part of the fun of playing playing at
this level. Any level. It's bodies, but it's the old
top two inches where you've got to get yourself through that.
(03:29):
And I think once they come to the Saturday afternoon,
they'll all go out the window. They know, they won't
know they've been sore or anything, and they will just
be keen to rip into it. So now we're all
pretty fit and healthy at the stage.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
So Nick, this is the third time up against the Canes,
going down both times. What have you learned from those
two head outs against them?
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Oh? I think probably probably our biggest thing has been
our discipline. You know, we've sort of probably gave away
a lot of penalties and you know, which allowed them
into our twenty two. And they're a good side. You know,
we'll once they get into that into our twenty two.
They're pretty hard to stop. And you know, and we've
(04:12):
just got to if we don't hold on to the
ball or and when we haven't got the ball, we've
stay stay connected and hopefully don't give them too many
options to run through us. It'll give us a bit
of change. But you know, we just got it. You
can't do it like you almost like you said before,
we let the reads back in for a few a
couple of tries.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
The other day.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
If we sort of slipping and out of the game,
the Hurricanes are good enough to punish us. So along
with the discipline, that'll be the key. That's just making
sure we've switched on the whole time.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
You came so close to lifting the trophy last year
losing in the Grand Final.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Is this the Chiefs year?
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Nick, Well, there's an opportunity. There's definitely an opportunity for us.
But you know, that's the challenge that we've got against
the Hurricanes this week. There's no reason why we can't
if we get everything right. It's like all four teams
have all all got a chance to take it out.
It's just I suppose the old, funny, old cliche of
(05:09):
who fronts up on the day. Yeah, you know, like
last year we won, I think we lost one game
the whole year and then lost the final. So you know,
you think you're traveling pretty and then get bumped in
the final. So hopefully this year we've got a few
quite a few inconsistent games, and the last sort of
(05:30):
couple of weeks sort of been a little bit more
consistent with our performance, and if we can keep building
on that, you know, we put our we put ourselves
in a position to to have a go and you know,
challenge the hurricanes so that that win.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
And as I mentioned, you've got a farm just down
the road from a few days. You won't be able
to pop down this year, will you.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
No, I might not to be able to get out
of my bloody driveway either, So there'll be lots of
lots of traffic, which is great. I mean, it's a
it's an awesome event, and you know it's good to
you know what. You need those events for the farming
community to keep thriving. On both sides of the business
people selling stuff and obviously the farmer is buying. So yeah,
(06:12):
hopefully the weather's good for everyone so they can all
get out there and enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Well, thanks Nick, go well on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
No problems, much much appreciating for the coll
