Speaker 1 (00:01):
Live at Field Days the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian
Kelly on gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
You're in the Country Sport Breakfast having a few technical
issues with BK down at the Field Days, so you
stuck with producer Mark for the meantime, bringing in Elliott
Smith's voice of rugby here on gold Sport this morning.
Good morning, Elliott, Good day Mark. Big game tonight Blues Brumbies.
Will we see a better Brumbies side that came over

(00:28):
a couple of weeks ago cast the Blues and was
at forty nine to seven. They lost.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Yeah, it was look you'd hope. So it feels like
the Brumbies are kind of built for playoff rugby, isn't
don't they? You know? And we didn't see the best
of them a few weeks back when they came to
Eden Park. But you think back a couple of years
ago when the Blues essentially got saved by off of
Thaunga Fasti charging down a drop goal from No La
La Coeo late in the game and boy, that drop
goll was going to head over with the way it

(00:53):
was looking, and that would have won the game for
the Brumbies. They would have played the Crusaders in the
final the following week. That was only two years ago
in twenty twenty two. So look, they have to be
better tonight the Brumbies compared to what we saw a
few weeks ago that I think they've got six match
winning streak at the moment. I think the way they
played against the hynd is just squeeze them either side

(01:13):
of halftime. If they're still in it at halftime and
the Blues can't quite shake them off, then we've got
a real contest on a hands. What we saw the
Blues do last week was just shut the game down
pretty early on against the Drawer. They'll look to do
the same again tonight conditions. It's been heavily raining overnight
in Auckland, expected to continue to at least mid afternoons,
so it might be quite sodden underfoot as well. But

(01:35):
you'd suspect probably the Blues will be too good to
win that game tonight and they'll advance to the final
next week. You would think, how much of a loss
is it that Paddy to a Pilow two is not
playing well. I think it's a big one. I think
it really is. He's been superb this year and was
for me a bolted on starter for the first Test
against England and again in a couple of weeks time now.
But and the way that he's carried the ball, the

(01:57):
think has been really really good. They're bringing Sam Dowry,
I think has had a really good season and now
he might also be in the mix for one of
those All Black spots. But it is a loss. I
think there's a natural drop off there from Patrick tweeplot
to a player that's been at All Black for more
than a decade now to Sam Dowry who is still
finding his way and using his body finding ways that

(02:17):
he can play at that level. So I think it
is a loss having Patrick twep a lot to out
Sam Dearry Josh Burry pretty inexperienced second row. Even though
it feels like Darry has been around for a few seasons,
he's had a few injuries here and there which have
meant that he's not played probably as many games as
he would have liked. So that may be an area
where the Brumbies look to target the Blues tonight. They've

(02:38):
got Nick Frost coming off the bench as well, who
I think is two hundred and four centimeters tall as
a big boy. If they can get some wins there
early on, that may be an issue for the Blues
trying to counter that.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, I actually bumped into Sam Derry before the Blues
Awards night a couple of weeks ago, and that is
a He's a huge human. I'm taller than most and
I felt very small next to him. To the next game,
Hurricanes Chiefs could be a sell out. We love a
ticket sales here on gold Sport passing what twenty thousand
a couple of days ago. Are the Chiefs sort of

(03:11):
crooking with gas at the right time?

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Well, there might be look that they really batter. I
thought during Super Rugby and battles probably being a little
unfair to them because they still qualified and fourth, but
it felt like it never really hit their straps. They
lost to the Crusaders of cause, lost to the Hurricanes twice,
lost to the Blues quite comfortably in the final round
at Eden Park, but they found their rhythm last week

(03:32):
against the Reeds. Now, whether it was just a poor
Red Sider, whether the Chiefs clicked at the right time
and had peaked at the right time and Super Rugby
remains to be seen. Obviously, the Bagasta testers tomorrow afternoon
against the Hurricanes and what is an absolute doozy of
a semi final, you know, Clark late Sorry. Clayton McMillan
said after that Blues lost at Eden Park that we'll

(03:54):
see you back here at Eden Park in three weeks time.
He's pretty confident that things are going to play the
way that they have and then beat the Hurricanes and
beat them. So we'll see if they can respond to
that tomorrow and beat the Hurricanes. So we're going to
have a parochial home crowd, as you say, close to
a seal it if not a sellout backing them and
cheering them on. The Hurricanes have come, you know, and

(04:18):
accepted and risen to most of the challenges this season.
Perhaps that the Chiefs going in as underdogs might actually
suit the Chiefs a little bit going into this game.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Do you feel it's almost with the Chiefs that they
worked out last year that the regular season not that important?
Did they rolled out what fifteen straight before that Queensland
last and now they realized they crumbled in the final.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
One hundred percent. Absolutely, Looky, you've obviously got at a
certain level during the regular season because you look at
the Crusaders, and you know that there was four teams
that miss out, and you ideally want to have home
advantage at least in one of those weeks, if not
for the semi final as well as it was they
finished in fourth. But you're right, there was a feeling
last year in the Chiefs that they peaked to early
and then came on came a cropper in the final

(04:59):
against the Now essentially it boils down to the fact
that you've got to win three games in Super Rugby,
which is a bit of an indictment on things, but
that's the cards that the competition directors have dealt them.
So you've got to win three games, and they've ticked
that first box. They've got the Hurricanes tomorrow and then
potentially a final next week if they're good enough to

(05:21):
win tomorrow. So I think potentially they've played the percentage game,
you might say, and tick that box and we'll see
whether they can get the job done tomorrow. The Hurricanes,
you know, played some really good rugby the season. It's
going to be a fascinating battle. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Always kind of felt like the Hurricanes were going to
drop off at some stage this season, and it hasn't happened,
and just quickly Elliott US Golf opened one twenty fourth
at Pinehurst, number two foxy three over seventy three, eight
shots back from leader Patrick Cantley, and happy with that.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
You're not the ideal start. We were talking while it
was at two over and thought that it's probably a
decent enough score to get into certainly not the worst
score that's been posted today. Is probably sort of middle
of the in terms of some of those scores. May
be a shot further back than he would like. I
think it's gonna squeeze over the course of the weekend.
We're still got the afternoon players to come as well,
so can't lay with a five hundred sixty five early doors.

(06:12):
Scheffler's out there now McElroy as well, see if they
can chip away at that and make some damage. But yeah,
for Ryan Fox may be a shot closer to that
part title would have been nicer. Not the end of
the world, but there'll probably be a bit of work
to do in the second round to ensure that he
makes the cut and plays the weekend.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Thank you Alllett, We're here from you throughout the morning
and callwell this evening.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
It's been a pleasure. Thank you
