Speaker 2 (00:08):
We keep the faith here each and every week. The
Warriors losing streak against the Storm continues, sadly, going down
thirty eight twenty four at a wet and windy Mount
Smart Stadium on Saturday. Joining us on the show this morning,
Marcherbergus out of the New Zealand Herald, one half of
the Big League podcast Morning Bird, Good Morning, fourteen Zip.
After twenty minutes, we're all feeling good, weren't we? Then
(00:29):
a thirty eight to twenty four loss. What went wrong? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I mean, I think the first thing you'd say with
the streak the sixteen games, they are getting closer. So
that's a good thing, you know, they're getting closer to
beating the Storm. They got close last year and I
can't remember a time in the street going back to
twenty fifteen where they've been fourteen mil up and then
the course they got close again in the second half.
(00:55):
So there are some positives, but it was in the
end bit of an anti climax because as you say,
they started so well, they were fourteen up after fifteen minutes,
but not just fourteen mil up. They were completely dominant.
The Storm I think had completed one set. You know,
they hadn't even been in the game. Craig Bellamy said
after the match that he couldn't remember in his time
(01:16):
at the Storm amost twenty years them having such a
bad start. But as they do, they dug their way
out of it. Their half back Keewis, half back Jerome
Hughes was incredible. The Warriors made a couple of mistakes,
there were a couple of you know, refs, cause momentum
always swings, but it was disappointing the way that it
swung so dramatically in that first half.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
And a little bit of ill discipline a little bit.
It was quite a bit of ill discipline on the
Warriors half. I mean that Cod Hangar a pass that
had him sent off. That was a big one, wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Yeah, there was, there was, There was eras and there
was I think I think what you'd say, one thing
the Warriors lacked, like they so well in so many areas,
actually actually dominated a lot of the stats that we
like to look at in terms of yardage, post contact
meters that they defended really well. Had a lot less mistackles,
but they did lack a bit of composure, calmness and patience,
(02:15):
and that was epitomized by the discipline. Two players enter
the sinburn Marcella Montoya a pretty stupid sort of double
double offenses and quick succession, and then and then Dallen
the cod hangars you talk about, and that was sort
of that was the end of the road because until
then they were back in the game, but then to
(02:36):
be reduced to twelve men and briefly to eleven, that
was it.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Do you think psychologically in their in their minds, the
Warriors are thinking ge is over three thousand plus days
since we beat the Storm. That sort of gets in
their heads and they struggle against them.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
I'm sure. I'm sure it's in your I'm sure it's
in your head a little bit. It's a bit like
the Wallabies coming to Eden Park. You know, certainly, it
certainly is a little factor. But I think the way
they started the game showed they went' overawed, the way
they came back in the second half to within two points,
(03:16):
I'm sure it is a little factor and it will
be a massive relief when they do beat them. We
also can't forget that the Storm, I would say just
about the hardest team to play in the NRAL. I
know we all talk about Penrith and the Roosters, but
the Storm they got this pattern of player that had
fifteen years, have got some amazing players in their spine,
(03:36):
and they are the masters at manipulating the referees. You know,
they're just the masters of the dark art. So you
put all that together, are hard team to play against.
They're amazingly well coached. But yeah, there could be there
certainly could be a little bit of that as well.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
You mentioned the number seven player for the Storm and
Kiwi's your own Hughes really showed he's one of the
best players in the comp teach and what a performance
by the Storm numbers even on Saturday, wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Well, he just dragged his team, you're executive, or he
dragged his team out of a massive hole. I think
he had four try assists, set up three other line breaks,
you know, because they were as we talked about, they
were had a big problem in the first quarter and
then suddenly by halftime they're up twenty to fourteen. I
think he'd set up three of the trios just his
(04:26):
kicking game as exceptional. He's one of the best halves
of his generation, and unfortunately he's become one of the Warriors'
biggest enemies or rivals, whatever you want to put it.
He has played eleven games against the Warriors and never lost.
Not just that he always just plays so well against them.
He said to me that he told me after the
(04:48):
game that his father, he lives in Wellington, came up
to watch the game, and his father never really seasoned
play because you know, he's in Australia, so he said
he wanted to put it, put on a show for
his dad, and he certainly did.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Nice touch. Sean Johnson first game back for a month
and a bit, what do you make of his return?
Speaker 1 (05:06):
He was rusty, Yeah, he was rusty. He wasn't. He
wasn't the Sean we've come to know. He's been out
six weeks. But like anyway, he's a confidence player. I
had a couple of poor touches early and so you know,
the confidence wasn't there. But also he was actually playing
a different role. He was kind of playing second or
third receiver with Tomato Marden getting much more of the ball,
(05:30):
which is what that signal they were going to do
and I think long term it is a good idea,
but it will take a little while for them to
get used to. I think they trained twice together before
the match. Sean has used to getting his hands on
the ball all the time and suddenly he had to
wait a bit more. So it'll be an adjustment for him.
I think it is the right way to go because
they'll have a lot more threats. But yeah, Sean didn't
(05:53):
look himself, did he.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
No, he didn't really. Roger two of us a sheck
back next week, we hope. Can you see him sliding
into the wingers position?
Speaker 1 (06:01):
He could do, actually, couldn't he But although rocco'berry is
also injured at center, so there's a vacancy at center,
I'd probably see Roger come back into center, and they've
got some other options on the wing. Of course, with
Dellen being suspended for well at least a week, I
would say for that high techer we talked about. But yeah,
Roger will be a boost. He's been out for Jesus
(06:22):
seems like a long time now he doesn't and he
is that kind of player that can get them going.
He's got that X factor we all know, so good
timing for Roger to come back.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
I think looking ahead to this weekend, it's a must
win situation for the Warriors again five o'clock Saturday afternoon
against the Titans who upset them on end Zac Day
at home at Mount smut. So what are the Warriors
going to have to do to make sure they get
those two valuable points?
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Well, i'd have to take their chances. I think that's
the big thing. That was certainly something on Saturday, but
especially that Times game, if we remember that and day,
it was a bit of it, a bit of a
disaster really. They created a million opportunities, couldn't score. The
Titans are jagged a few and that was it. But
I'd say they'll have a lot of revenge on their
(07:10):
mind the Warriors. They've got a good record on the
Gold Coast. They always get a lot of keywis to
those games. Some of the Titans players were complaining to
me once that whenever they play the Warriors over there
half the crowd it seems to be supporting the Warriors.
So that that should that should help and they'll definitely
be up for this. But you're right that they just
(07:31):
have to win this. They can't afford to loop any
further back so and I'm sure. I'm sure they'll go well.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
But it's nice to catch up mate.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Enjoy your week, Thank you very much.
