Speaker 2 (00:10):
Well, it all started back in February and now we're
just one game to go. The Blues took down the
Brumbies thirty four twenty Friday Night, and the Chiefs took
down the Hurricanes thirty nineteen in the second semi final,
so it'll be a battle of the Bombays, the Blues
and the Chiefs five past seven Saturday night from Eden
Park for the Grand Final, joining us as he does
on Monday mornings for We're All Black and Gold Sport

(00:32):
Expert commentator and straw and Morning and Morning b k
oh mate, Battle of the Bombays. We're looking forward to that,
aren't we?

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah? I think so got some nice, nice spice about it.
Hisn't wonderful games over the years between the Blues and
Chiefs and also walking in the white cuttle two mate,
So nothing much changes, No, you're right right.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Let's go back to Friday night and the Blues. They
blew the Brumbies off the park in the first twenty minutes.
But it all kind of changed after that.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah, it was an impressive sort of twenty twenty four
minute blitz, they wasn't it. Those four tries really did
determine the outcome of the game. But yeah, I think
just before halftime and then you know, just after halftime,
the game lost a lot of shape. I mean, the
Brumby sort of did muscle up a little bit. They
scored a try and defensively just started to get things sorted.
So it certainly made it a far more even contest.

(01:24):
But you know, the Blues did enough again and next
second half did they to win the game pretty comfortably
in the end.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Did you like what you saw of the Blues building
up towards the you know, well that win alone, but
the final this coming weekend, well, I.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Mean I think we've s talking about it most Monday mornings.
You know, their script to win games is pretty simple.
They've got a really hard working pack of forwards. They
run very hard, direct and square, and probably got one
of the best, if not the best defenses in the country.
So they know how to score points when they get
in that red zone in that twenty two meter area

(02:00):
close to the line, and they know how to stop
teams from scoring They don't have a lot of elaborate
plays or tecking scripts, I suppose you could say, but
it's just a really comprehensive and simple and direct way
of winning. And they've done it all season, you know.
And the Probablies did come at them on Friday night.
But yeah, again, clearly one of the best two teams

(02:22):
in the country, so certainly deserve their place in the final.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
You were there at Eton Park on Friday night. I
watched the game at home. It was a disappointing crowd.
What wasn't it?

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah, really disappointing. I had sat a few mates yesterday
and I just don't know why. You know, the weather
wasn't great on Friday, b K was pretty horrible. There
was raining around, and they can often determine people in
terms of whether they walk along to a match or not.
But you have think it's only like twelve or thirteen
thousand for a semi final for a team that's been

(02:52):
consistently good all season, you know, and they've got a
really good following here in the city. But you would
assume that you get at least twenty five down into
a game like that, and then you at least his
fingers crossed that we get a big crowd on on
Saturday night and the.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Blues came through pretty well unscathed. On the injury front,
I believe.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, I haven't heard the latest. Something that on Dalton Papa.
I think he came off for an hi a. So
again we don't often know how significant those are. I mean,
he didn't play this week this weekend. There, it's a
big loss. He's been a real enforcer, I think, playing
at seven and certainly been deputizing a lot for Patrick
Tuokalo to as well. So if he's out that will

(03:32):
weaken them. But otherwise pretty much unscathed.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
I think apparently you lost a tooth, Oh that's what
it was.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Well, but everyone was knocked out of his face that
that could be an hi a. But I suspect the
knowing that that he'll be fine this week.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
All right, let's go to the second see me?

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Shall we?

Speaker 2 (03:52):
A bit of a shame really, the Chief started off
very very strongly in the Canes. They just struggled. They're
on the back foot through my the game, weren't they.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, I mean they certainly worked out the Chief, that's
mcmonnan and his crew. I had to beat the Hurricanes
in that verse the ten to twelve minutes was impressive,
wasn't it? Forteen zero? And they just never really relinquished.
I don't think, you know, running brilliantly by McKenzie. Yeah,
he's playing it the very best of his form. Well
served by Cortizatima, but also the key players in the group.

(04:25):
And I must take my head off to Jacobson, you know,
he said touch an impressive season. He's a real leader too.
It was a little bit of what Dalton Papa le
he probably does for the Blues. But his ability on
both sides of the ball to keep that Chiefs team,
you know, in the right parts of the field, is
impressive too. And of course he's lots of other people
as well, but you know that certainly worked out how

(04:45):
to beat the Hurricanes and we saw that in the
first half.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Yeah, absolutely. I think now the big concern for Clayton
McMillan is the injuries. He's got quite a list of
injuries to deal with leading up to the final this Saturday,
hasn't he.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, I mean especially you told, I mean how brilliant
he being for the last two or three weeks an
impressive Probably the best hooker running around New Zealand right now.
He gets them going forward a lot too, you know,
when they're when they're a little bit planned at times
to get a little bit lateral at times. He's the
one that gets them going forward again. So a massive
loss there. But I heard talking on the phone yesterday

(05:23):
and he just said, oh, you know, we've got a
good group at home. We only bought twenty three to Wellington.
We're just going, you know, go and get the next guy,
you know, next better up they say, so. Yeah, he
said it in a pretty clear and confident way. And
this is a team for mine that is very good culturally.
They certainly we've had for each other and under no
illusion that there'll be someone else to step into the bridge.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
It's rather interesting that the two teams in the final,
the Blues and the Chiefs, coached by former Bay of
Plonny Steamers players and coaches Vern Cotter versus Clayton McMillan.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Well, if you look at both of them, those two
his careers as well, very very humble, hard working men,
and you know the way they played the game. And
I think I particularly being Cotdra at Auckland here he's
bought a very special his own flavor to that which
has probably been missing up in the city here for
a number of years. And of course McMillan, you know,
again a hard nosed football football player, but very smart.

(06:23):
And I think one of his greatest attributes to BK
is that he understands the Manna and you know, and
about Paynui and the White Couple or anything. He's got
all that right, you know. And I think when you
put those two things together to a pregnable force Saturday.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Night, Eton Park, do you think we're going to fill
the place? They wanting something like forty thousand people? Will
we get the crowd?

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Well, look, if you do your part and get the
weather right for us, so we will get that, we'll
lock that one down. But now look, i'd love to think,
you know, we'll get a whole raft of players and
punters sorry from the White Cup, come up with the
cow bells. I know we'll get a fear chuck. A
lot of my mates lived down there, whales born, and
so a lot of them will be on the road

(07:06):
and then we'll get a lot of walk I think
we'll get thirty thirty five to be fear and there
will be a fitting a crowd for a final of
this nature.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Who are you picking Chiefs or Blues?

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Blues all the way we can?

Speaker 3 (07:18):
And you're born in Chawermoto, you well, I've kind of
been living in Auckland for so long that you know,
my white coutle underpans are faded now, so I've blew
all the way.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Oh mate, all right, it's going to be a crack
and no matter what. Thanks for joining us, mate, and
good luck to both those teams.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Thanks mate, thank you absolutely.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
And Strawn He'll be calling the game with Elliot Smith
on Saturday night right here on gold Sport. If you
can have a TV and you're in the car, you
can listen to full live commentary gold Sport
