Speaker 1 (00:00):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
Gold Sport Live commentary of Super Rugby Pacific with Habit Health,
tackling all your eggs and pains from sport and work.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Just be working out. I think we've got four sleeps
to go until the All Black squad gets announced on Monday.
Joining US New Zealand here rugby writer columnist Gregor Paul. Morning, Gregor, Up.
It's exciting. I think the All Black squads. I think
it'll be a few surprises in there, don't you.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
It'll be a few new mens. Yeah, that's not that
about that, because there's a few young players who put
their hands up and have made some compelling cases to
be picked, particularly in areas where there's going to need
to be some new blug because obviously if you guys
have placed that for the World Cup. So yeah, and look,
I think the fact there's a horn new management team,
horny coaching team, there's a level of excitement about where
(00:50):
this could go, where it might end up. So yeah,
I'm expecting I don't know, three to four, five six names, maybe.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
New year and new captain as well, that's another.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Big one captain. Yeah, and my gut feel is probably
going to be stop Barrett. I just feel that there's
a relationship there between him and Razor and they know
each other. And given the volume of change in the
coaching group, you know, they've only got a couple of
weeks to get ready to play for England. Just Phil
Raiser is going to feel comfortable working with a guy
(01:24):
that he's already worked with.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
So that's a tempting thing Monday for the old Blake squad.
But let's look at Saturday, Saturday evening ed Eden Park.
Two teams going to war, and there's a whole lot
of storylines there that you wrote about in your article
for the New Zealand Herald. But you're pretty excited about
Harry Plummer.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Stories. Isn't it like he's Let's not misconstrue the debate here.
I'm not pushing this guy as a potential All Black
number ten or anything like that. I don't think he
is at that level. But he has come into that
team for the Blue and he's done an exceptional job.
He's used all the schools that he's got to manage
a really simple game plan, but he's done it really well.
(02:06):
He's given the Blues direction, he's given them stability to
put them in all the right places. He doesn't take
a lot of risks, but his risk management is really good.
When he needs to pass, he does. He needs to kick.
His decision makings outstanding. And look, it's probably a little
bit easier playing behind a pack like the Blues at
the moment for number ten, when you're going forward, that
(02:27):
does make your life easier. But he's a wee bit
of an unsung hero, and if he just keeps going
the way he's going, he probably will get higher on us,
but he'll certainly be recognized, and he has been recognized
by his teammates as one of the best players.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
And going up against the Chiefs Dabian McKinsey as well.
So two great.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Players there, well, two different players. Yeah, we've got steady
issue goes Harry, who's sort of imagining the ball around
the park nicely. And then we've got Damian who jeepers,
you know, jack in the box, this guy who he's
had a good year and you know his ability to
drop into the backfield and counter attack from deep as
(03:07):
well as his ability to buzz around in the heavy traffic.
He's an exciting player. He's done it well with the Chiefs.
But again he's another guy who perhaps underappreciated. You know,
he's matured a bit. His game management has been good
this year. He's kicked well for that goal and out
of hand, so he's you know, he looks like he
plays at a million miles an hour, but there's actually
(03:28):
a little bit of strategic maturity about him at the moment.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I like your description of him as a jack in
the box and then actually sums him up in a
way because he pops up everywhere.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Doesn't he. Yeah's cloned himself sometimes. Is you sure he's
just passed the ball at number ten and then he's
catching the ball all hang on, hang on here, look,
and I think the rugby is fantastic to have a
guy like him in and yeah, because you look at
him and your heart leaps into your mouth when he's
buzzing about. When there's some of these big lads for
(03:59):
you one hundred and thirty, he will prop eyeing them up,
thinking cheaper as if you just get too close to me.
Goodness knows what's going to happen here. But you know,
he's tough. He's a sign that you can play this
game all different shapes and sizes. And the beauty is
when he does find himself with a bit of space
one on one against a big, lumbering lock. Brilliant, isn't
(04:20):
it Because he can just he just scoops past them.
Space opens up and you know, the game's exciting.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
How do you feel about Patrick Typoloto coming back starting
at lock as well? I mean, after what looked like
an injury that would keep him out of the game
for many many meani wigs.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah, miracle. I don't know. He wrapped his wagon bananas.
I don't know what he did there. Look sometimes looks
he My understanding is he wasn't misdiagnosed. He just turned
up to training this week as he would do, you know,
just to be part of the team. And he said, look, mine,
he's actually not feeling too bad. Would any of the
mind if I just had a wed trainer in the
(04:56):
gym and they said, well okay, and he fell fined
and they said, well, well back can I around on
the field and they know okay? And he did me
hasn't reacted to the training, and they've said they've looked
at it again. I presumably've had it all scanned and
doctors have looked at it and they've gone I don't
know how to explain it, but you can play so
goodness knows. Great story. I look great for him because
(05:17):
he's been such a big figure for that team and
to get him on the field and for him personally
to be able to play in that game, well, I
think that's enormous because it would have been tough for
him to watch it from the sidelines. So have them out.
There's another It's another great storyline.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
And two great coaches too, going hit to hit a
of Ian Connor first and the new coach for the Blues.
And then you've got Donk as well for the for
the for the Chiefs. So great coaching.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Two really simple guys. I don't mean that rudely. I
mean I mean that they've got a real simple philosophy
about how they want the game to be played, to
communicate that really well to the players, and they know
how to get young players to buy into their vision.
And they don't confuse them, and they don't has too
much of them. Uh like they've they've had enormous success
(06:04):
bother of them with that really with clarity, with simplicity,
and I think it's again, you know, I think we're
set up here for a fantastic contest because they both play,
in their own minds, a really simple game. The Chiefs
are probably a little bit more counter attech team and
probably play a bit more player rugby, a bit wider
(06:24):
to the way that the Blues are playing at them all,
which is more a forward shi piece game. So contrasting styles.
Two good coaches. I'm sure they'll have picked each other,
you know, apart in terms of what were the opportunities
lie for their teams. Full house in park, rugby back absolutely,
who are you picking? I'm probably going to say the
(06:46):
Blues home advantage. They play a low risk game, which
I think is helpful in a final. They've beat one,
they've both been the one before, so I don't think
either of them will be overly nervous at this one.
Will both be pretty determined, And that's cliche, but I
think the Blues will win it. But I mean we're talking,
you know, the last kick at gold with two points,
(07:06):
three points, nothing in it.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Love it, Gregor, enjoy the game. Thank you for joining us, mate,
and we look forward to the announcement of the All
Black team on Monday. Pay Gregor Paul joining us here.
