Black Caps limited overs captain Kane Williamson has turned down a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) central contract in a bid to prolong his career.
The 33-year-old will instead sign a casual playing contract, meaning he will have the opportunity to cash in playing overseas T20 cricket, as seamer Trent Boult did in recent years.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
A Country Sport breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Well I big dous yesterday. Black Caps Limited over captain
Caine Williamson's turned down a New Zealand contract, a full
time contract central contract in a bid to prolong his career.
The thirty three year old will instead sign a casual
playing contract, meaning he'll have the opportunity to cash and
playing overseas T twenty cricket as seemur Trent Bolt did

(00:28):
in recent years, joining us on the show This Morning
man and knows all about contracts and things like that.
O Targo Spark coach and gold Sport host as well.
When I'm not here, Graig, coming morning, Craig, Welcome home.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Morning Beka. I don't think I've ever seen cood breaks
that probably have the numbers that someone like Caine Williams
has probably dealt with in his career. But great to
be with you. Great back in the jail and I've
been away for a month over in the UK, Bka,
but I've come home. I didn't see any sun in
the UK and I haven't seen any song back in
the Deedon since the ben Haarts, so I need a

(01:00):
bit of even a bit of cold sun is okay
to try and warm me up.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Well, today's the start of summer in the UK, so
you missed it made It's the summer side just over there,
so there you go.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Seriously, I got the other day I landed. It was
really warm. It was the last day of Premier League football,
so it was the big one when Wood City with
it or with Arsenal and I'm an Arsenal team and
I was actually a lot of people around sort of
in London. That's where I was trying to find a
train to get to Nottingham. But and then obviously City won.
But yeah, that was sunny. Next day was sunny, and

(01:31):
I kid you not, I did not see the sun
after that. It wasn't raining much, but it just was
no sun.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Okay, Well let's before we talk about your experiences over
there with Nottingham. What did what did you make of
Kane Williamson's announcement yesterday?

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Oh, I think it's very different than trend Bolts. I
think Kane what he's done, I mean, Kane's probably just
saying well, it's not it's not the biggest year in
the world when it comes to international cricket in New Zealand.
There might be an opportunity he's took to play test matches.
I'd say, yeah. What he's doing is saying that it
might be so we have a time to give him
some freedom to either say no to some cricket, so

(02:07):
take some time off. Is he going to go and
play overseas and make big money. He doesn't need to, BEKA,
so he might want to play potentially in one tournament.
I think it's probably more about having some freedom to
have some time off. But he still won't miss the
key part of the New Zealand summer, the test matches.
He'll still play for some ways. It just shows his character.

(02:28):
He probably could take it a contract and still ask
for time off BK. But what he's doing is he's saying, look,
I'd like to have time off. I don't think it's
right that I take a New Yealant contract. I'll just
take a casual one and I'll allow someone else to
be given that payment. Well, I just sort of, you know,
have a year of maybe doing what i'd like to do.
And I think he's doing that opportunity.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Is there another King Williamson in the wings waiting to
step up? I mean you know he's a big loss
in a way.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Well, I mean, I don't know how much of a
loss he's going to be because I said, I don't
think he's going to miss a lot of cricket. I
don't think we'll see him player or maybe t twenties
four New Zealand. He'll still do that around the world
a bit for Yeah, for that experience, but we're not
going to listen to test cricket the next couple of years.
We're not going to lose them to one day cricket
fingers cross so we don't yet. Obviously we've got rutch

(03:11):
and he's performance well and we've got that, but no,
we're talking about our greatest if a batsman whatever a start,
but also at the end of his career, you know,
you can be able to put him alongside Sir Richard
had He and obviously you don't want to compare areas,
you don't want to compare greats, but those two will
stand hidden shoulders as our top two cricketers, you know,
one with that one with ball. So as long as

(03:34):
we can keep King going and playing for as long
as we possibly can better that just people like Rutching
and the next generation time to go through.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
You know, when you look at his T twenty record
since the start of twenty twenty two, nine players have
played forty plus games. Of T twenty, Williamson's only played
something like nineteen. So he hasn't played a lot compared
to the others, has he?

Speaker 1 (03:55):
No, he hasn't. And remember he had that in the
injury that he got in the IPL, so he didn't
have a lot of cricket leading up into the World
Cup last year and then the fist year World Cup
and then you know then they'll still be managing him.
So no, and he's still a guy. I think he's
been a regular in the IPL, not only because of
his playing a bizzy, but I think it's leadership. But

(04:17):
you know, he's still He's still got a wonderful career
and had the game brilliant. I still think he should
have opened all the time. You know, he's a guy
that more balls he faced, the better he scores really
well when you only have two fielders outside. We've got
this theory that maybe Fan Allen can stand there and
swing hard or how that worked out for us in
the last three weeks. Whereas players with high craft and skill,

(04:38):
well then I think they've still got parts to play,
and Cain still the model. You know, three formats, that's
how you want to be.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
And Kine though he he even struggled in the latest
Teacher Any World Cup really didn't he?

Speaker 1 (04:48):
I think they all did. Again. I mean I don't
over see, but you know, cricket's a game of rhythm.
Betting the game of rhythm. You get rhythm from playing.
It's pretty simple and can do. Weren't easy but fun.
It's not like they didn't know where they were going.
So you know, again I go back to you know,
it's no different. You'll know, you could sit in a

(05:10):
simulator all you want when it comes racing a car,
but I reckon you probably get better practice by sitting
in the car itself, wouldn't you. So you know that's
that's probably what the black Caps have done, and our
of simulation, but they probably just didn't get enough game
time to be to find that rhythm of playing.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Going forward, Will it be harder and harder to see
our top players play in competitions like the Supersmash.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
In New Zealand. Yeah, Well it's interesting. We're nearly at
the stage and you know, I don't I do know
enough about it, but I think at the stage where
our contract system has become probably a little bit archaic
and and maybe and I don't have the answer. I mean,
this is a players association thing and they're very pretective
of it. But maybe it's time we've got to look
at the way we do it. Do we have read

(05:52):
all contracts? Do we have white book contracts? You know,
I'm not sure because we're going it's going to be
with a BK. You can't get opportunities like Trent Bolt
or Term Saudi sorry or Came Williamson or you know,
you don't get those opportunities unless you've been really successful
for the black Caps. So you've still got to You've
still got to in your stripes by playing international cricket. Now,

(06:14):
there are some players like you know, maybe Finella last
year who got traveled around the world. But I've still
got to do well for New Zealand to be able
to give opportunities around the world. And even Colin Munro
who's been a jetsenter and done that, he still played
a lot for New Zealand. So without New Zealand you
wouldn't get to where these guys are so so that's
one of the benefits of our contacting system. But I

(06:35):
think maybe we do need to have a slight change,
but just got to find ways to make sure we
look after our best players. Also makes for those best
players still want to play for us as well.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
And for you, how was the coaching experience Nottingham and
in the UK? You spent about a month or so
over there, didn't you?

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, it was awesome and over and joined it. Yeah,
they called the Blaze, that's the woman the woman competition,
the professional competition had eight teams over then I've got
a whole lot of things below it, and don't if
you're on millions of the league cricketers. But I was
with the Blaze, which was what we were hard being
a Spark from a Tago and then going to the
Blaze because that's obviously Wellington here and then but I

(07:11):
joined Niman. Now it was wonderful. I was here for
nine rounds of the twenty twenty comp But I've just
got finals coming coming out this weekend actually, and believe
it or not, the Blaze are playing the Sparks in
the in the playoff. So but and then I worked
with the second eleven in their Academy and basically there
was cricket on every day b k in the Walker's Game,
and there's more coaches than I've ever seen in my life.

(07:34):
So yeah, great experience. Really enjoyed it, but also reinforced
that we do a whole lot of really good things
here in New Zealand, and we're doing a really good
things in the Targo and we've got to keep doing
what we're doing because we're on the right track.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Fantastic Graig, Great to have you along mate, Welcome home,
Thanks b Kate,
