Speaker 1 (00:08):
Name past seven Well, Scott Robertson's named his first All
Black squad the coaching era of the new coaching Area.
The squad for next month's test against England to Test
and then Fiji includes five uncapped players. That group includes
Crusaders hook at George Bell, Hurricanes prop Pasilio Tussi, a
Chiefs number eight, while a set Ti Chief's halfback Courtiz

(00:29):
Ratama and Hurricanes midfield of Billy Proctor. Joining us on
the show this morning, our man on the ground in
christ to the voice of Rugby on the wireless Elliott Smith.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Morning, Elliott ab good to catch up.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Nice to catch up. You were in the room yesterday
waiting with baited breath for the announcement. Let's start at
the top. Scott Barrett named the new All Black captain.
Was at the right call over addisavi look.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
I think in terms of the fact these work with
Scott Robertson before and has been probably around Scott Robertson's
methods and how he wants to coach the team. I
think that probably makes it the right move. But it
was interesting to hear that he basically as soon as
he was asked or soon as he accepted his role,
and he muthered it over for some time, he wanted

(01:16):
artists A v and Jordi Barrett to be his vice captain.
So he will in on them quite a lot throughout
the season, I'm sure, and no doubt they'll have their
own chance to probably lead the All Blacks at some
point over the next couple of years when Scott Barrett's
rested or out with Indra or whatever it might be.
So look, I think there's probably two schools of thought.
But and people are probably going to be disappointed, especially

(01:39):
those from the Hurricanes reach and that maybe thought this
was going to be artists Ava's time. But I think
it was always probably an outside chance, given Scott Robertson's
worked with you know, Scott Barrett so many times before
then and is a known quantity that you know. I
think when you're coming into the All Blacks as as
coach for the first time, you want someone that you

(02:00):
have worked with before. I think that was always going
to be the likely option, and Scott Robertson outlining some
of those traits that he likes, and Scott Barrett yesterday
around the game management and you know, the way that
he approaches the game tactically. So that'll be important when
they get out on the parking to England and beyond.

(02:20):
So look at whether it's the right choice. I guess
it remains to be seen, but that's the choice that
Scott Robertson's made. And yeah, Scott Barrett the new All
Blacks captain, and.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Scott Barrett, I mean there would have been a bit
of talk about discipline because he doesn't He's got a
reasonably blemished record, really hasn't he.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, that question was definitely asked of both of them
last night, as we're discussed in the media conferences, and
Scott Robinson a little bit cagy, but did say that
he's had a word with Scott Barrett about the discipline
needing to be a bit better at test level, and
Scott Barrett firmly tacking that and accepting that he does

(02:57):
need to be better, especially as captain, and that line
that he has probably walked in the past around some
of that, this one will need to pull that back.
It's a fine line because you still wanted to have
that abrasiveness on both sides of the ball, but there
is a line and he needs to find it. When
you got the c next you name as captain, there's

(03:17):
a bit more responsibility to be on the park as
long as you can in each Test match.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
And we mentioned the five new faces in the squad,
who out of those five were you most surprised to
hear being named?

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well, it's going to be Pussily or TOSSI doesn't it
the Hurricanes and Bay of Pleat prop because I don't
think too many would have had them on their sheets
of thirty two as they scribbled them down around houses
and bars and puffs and whatever New Zealand rugby clubs
over the course of the last few days. I think
very few would have had a hand listed. Be a

(03:50):
genuine out and out bolter, isn't he in the in
the all blacks environment? But so he's definitely the one
that no one would have picked, or not many would
have picked. I'm sure someone out there might have hit
them on the car, but it didn't alert me anyway. Look,
he's a really exciting player that I think Jase Ryan

(04:12):
is very, very keen to work with I know that.
Scott Robinson said last night that was when Jace Ryan
saw him. Was a bit like married at first sight.
He was that excited. So we'll see how he unfolds
the All Blacks environment. But everyone I spoke to you
last night that has worked with him the Hurricanes or
had a glimpse of them the All Blacks said that

(04:32):
he's got a massively promising future now. He used to
play number eight so for a couple of seasons and
then he was telling me last night he went into
lockdown for on fifteen to twenty kilograms and thought, you
know what, probably needed to take a reality check here
and realized I'm not going to be a number eight
and he switched to prop after that. But he feels like,

(04:52):
you're still you know, getting his skill up as a
tidy property. So it was only last year where he
felt like he could really mobilize in the strum and
use it that way. So he's still got a lot
of learning to do, which is probably exciting from an
All Blacks perspective. But yeah, he's a genuine Boulter. But
there are other surprises there. You know, George Belt didn't
have a great Super Rugby season. But he said in

(05:13):
that Rocky ricket Kelly with the Night of the Future
Wallace a t T as well beating out Hoskins A
two too. It's a genuine surprise the Tit had a
really good back end of the season, but I didn't
know there's going to be enough to our Hoskins A
two too, but the All Blacks coaches have clearly decided
it was. And then the other two probably widely packed
Courtiz Ratama as the All Black third halfback, Billy Propter

(05:36):
and midfield as well. Most people would have had those
first uncapped players and there in their mix. So yeah,
five uncap players for Scott Barrett and Scott Robertson to
lead through this campaign. It's going to be a fascinating
and see how how much game time they get over
the next three tests and how they AdPT test level.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
I was quite surprised that Ricky Rickattelly wasn't included in
the squad. Did that surprise you.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, it did, look at I think it was a
genuine chewtout between George Bell and Ricky Rickettelli And speaking
to Scott Robertson last night, they heard on the side
of the future when it comes to George Bell, George
Bell and the twenty two rickety Rickettelli, I think twenty
nine as memory serves correct, so an eye to the
future and probably neither of them. George Bell is probably

(06:23):
not going to get March game time. Certainly there's two
tieh barring injury. Maybe in that fig test in San
Diego might find a bit more game time, but I
think opportunities are going to be few and far between.
And when you also consider that this is essentially the
fourth choice hocker with Samasoni Takiah. If he was fit,
you know, George Bell wouldn't be in the All Black

(06:43):
thirty two. So that's also to consider so very much
as any to the future. If you're going to select
someone that's certainly get limited game time, pick the player
that you want to build as a project for the
future rather than someone that's just going to record your
respect maybe not be there in four years time.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Three lock Scott Barrett Captain obviously toop of I and
Patrick two Piloto, do you think we're one short there?

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Perhaps, Sam Mary, Yeah, I think I think they probably are.
Actually Bka, I'm surprised that they've done that, and I
know Sam Dowry is in is cover is for the
All Blacks with Patrick toy Plato a bit banged up
and Scott Barrett still carrying a jury. But to me
that would suggest that you probably needed four locks in
the first place if you are going to carry a

(07:27):
bit of cover in that position. But they're believe that
Sam a penny fee now can cover lock, which he
certainly has with the Chiefs, and he's played some games
there as well. But I think in terms of a
test match, you wanted out and out specialist in the
second row playing that position, and I'm surprised they are
only with three, but it does probably speak to the

(07:47):
options there at the moment that they're few and far between.
Sam Dowry certainly the pick of the bunch, but not
many others there at the moment. So three quality test
locks that have played plenty of tests between them, Patrick
two lots of two per Yne and in Scott Barrett
the captain. But the depth after that is very, very shallow,
so I'm surprised they went with three. You know, get

(08:10):
an injury on game day, someone rolls an ankle in
the warm up for all of a sudden you look
with any seen now to cover Locke in a test
match and you know however long he might have to
cover for. So I think they are short there, and
there's always a question around the balance of the squad.
When you're only taking thirty two, you've got to make
some tough decisions. There's one fewer players and they took

(08:32):
to the roky Bull Cup last year, so you've got
to make some tight decisions. And they believe. And I
think being in New Zealand helps be k to be
honest because they can get someone or playing pretty quickly
and there's a said Sam Garrus cover as well for
the next week or so, so he can remain on
standby around the camp and come into camp properly if

(08:52):
need be. But I don't think they've gone one short there, Ellie.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
It's smorth joining us analyzing the new All Black squad
when they come together, by the way to start training
for what Saturday week.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Tomorrow morning in Wellington. They're all gathering. So yeah, all
those players, you know, the Blues players, the Chiefs players
that have had their final obviously on the weekend and
the end of season celebrations or commiserations depending on how
it ended for them. On Saturday night, we'll join the
team in Wellington last night. There were a few Hurricanes

(09:24):
players that were in town for it. But they'll all
gather on Wednesday and the Capitol and begin training. And
they're remain in the capital until next week, next Tuesday
before flying down two isn't even ahead of the first Test.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Talk about the notttle bit of missions, and we mentioned
them Blues number eight, Hoskins two to Sean Stevenson, chiefs
outside back, midfield of David Avili from the Crusaders and
Ruben Love. Here was another one out of those four
who do you think was the most unlucky not to
hear their name called?

Speaker 2 (09:56):
I think it's gonna be Hoskins the two. So in
all honesty, he had a storming super agius season. Probably
couldn't have done much more in my mind, although they
clearly could have done more on the All Blacks might have.
They're the ones that need to be impressed with most.
I guess BK don't they? But I thought he had
an excellency's considering where he fell to last year, not
making the All Blacks but also the All Blacks fifteen

(10:18):
squad last year and really was spit out the back.
I thought he reclaimed his birth for the Blues number
eight job really well and Stake has claimed impressively for them.
But it seems like there's probably a few worries and
it was interesting to hear a line from one of
the coaches last night Trummer with Jason Reynald Scott Robinson.
But either way, they basically said that they need to

(10:40):
play it on both sides of the ball, which tends
to sueduce to me that maybe there's some defensive question
marks around Hoskins. So that would be Yeah, that was
the biggest surprise for me. Wallace a tt you know,
charged in late he had that storming game against the
Hurricanes and the semi final. I thought he was the
Chief's best in the final as well, and that match

(11:00):
timperament even if his team didn't win the Super Rugby finals,
clearly impressing the coaches in Houston to Tutu on the
outside looking in. So look, that's a low for Hoskins,
but he's going to have to step up his game
that much further. I see already suggestions that maybe he
switches to Fiji when he's eligible, which would be in

(11:20):
the back end of twenty twenty five. I think he's
also eligible for England through his ancestry as well, so
he potentially could do that at the back end the
next year if his chance doesn't come again. But having
said all that, for the Rugby Championship they're going to
attack thirty six players into the year. Two are not sure,
but imagine they'd be a large squad as well, So
there's a chance still for hostin To Tutu to come

(11:43):
again with the All Blacks this season.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Elliet, thank you for joining us today. We wait with
aated breath to see how they perform against England ForSight
Bar Stadium Saturday week.
