Speaker 1 (00:00):
Field to the rotary shed.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Well in the Land of Hope and Glory. I guess
there'll be millions of people glued to their television seats
watching England play Slovenia at the moment, joining us out
of Talk Sport, craiget editor and for Zi or the
follow on Cricket podcast and Honoricky we John got Norman,
(00:24):
Morning John, Good morning.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
To your Bka.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Yet by one of the millions, expectations slightly dimmed after
we spoke last week.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
A lot of criticism actually.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
For England's performance against Denmark, so they've made one change
tonight they're coming up against Slovenia, who were playing in
their first finals in about twenty years or so. Neil
Nell England did have one chance, just one chance, throwed
out Phil Fold and straying offside before passing to back
with Sakka who put it into the back of the net.
(00:56):
But it's been pretty even so far. To be honest
with this, you have passed the ball around nice think
they don't seem to have a huge amount up front.
England have dominated possession but only really had that one
chance and a Phil Foden free kick and yeah, so
there we go. It's of course England have already qualified,
so they would definitely be it through to the next round.
(01:18):
But certainly if they finished top of the group, which
they'll do with a win possibly a draw, will just
make their their the opposition over the next couple of
rounds just slightly, slightly, slightly easier. But to be honest
with you, having watched Austria finish on top of a
group which featured France and the Netherlands, the quality and
(01:39):
the competition in this Euros is as close and as
tire as I can I can never remember.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
England really haven't sparked, really have they?
Speaker 3 (01:49):
They haven't.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I mean, well, actually they did for the first twenty
five minutes or so against Serbia. In that first game
they played really well and of course they went wandered
up against Mark as well, but then they just kind
of sat back, got picked off, passed around, lost the
ball and really it was a catalog of errors against Denmark.
(02:10):
It was embarrassing at times. They gave the ball away
so often. And to be honest with you, you know,
whilst he's still Neil Neil gets Livin. They're giving the
ball away quite a lot tonight as well, So yeah,
there is a few problems because of course, you know,
this is a much vaunted England team. You look at
the personnel the players in it expected far more than
(02:30):
what we've seen so far. But then of course it
could be a goal here actually, oh there's a chance
as the balls just whipped in and Harry Kane just
can't steer the ball inside on the far post. But yeah,
it's just been a little bit strange. You know, some
you know players in this team with massive, massive reputations
(02:51):
and price tags and they just haven't been able to
do the basics properly.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
And of course Scottish heartbreakout earlier this week as well
at the Euros.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Oh, I mean some of the drama in the tournament
so far. I'm not sure if he saw the Italy
game last night, one nil down against Croatia going into
the you know, the final stages of the game, and
Croatia scored, I mean Italy scored pretty much the last
kick of the game, and not only did that effectively
not Croatia out, that brought to the end Luka Modrich's
(03:23):
career because he's retiring after the tournament and that meant
Croatia couldn't qualify and there was heartbreak for Scotland as well.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
As you made mention.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
You know, they came to the tournament more in hope
than expectation. They got absolutely batted against Germany in the
first game, performed better against Switzerland, got a draw, credible draw,
but they knew that they needed to win against Hungry.
Hungry themselves needed three points and it was a really
poor game for seventy of minutes or so. Then there
(03:56):
was a horrendous injury to Varga. It got classic by
the Scottish goalkeeper. We had real fears that we were
seeing a repeat of the Erickson situation from four years ago.
Thankfully that wasn't the case. He retained consciousness but has
broken the bones in his face. He was taken to
hospital and he kind of thought that that might be
You know, dare I say it's Scotland's chance because the
(04:18):
Hungary players are clearly affected by this traumatic situation that
was unfolding in front of their eyes. But actually it
was Hungary who played the better. It was real end
to end stuff. Hungary hit the post Scotland had a
chance and then suddenly the ball is booted up to
the other end. Hungary on the counter attack and they
break Scottish hearts with again pretty.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Much the last kick of the game.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
So Scotland have to go home and Hungary are still
waiting to see if they've made it through to the
next stage of the competition.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
We're talking about making you through to the next stage
of competition T twenty World Cup. The cricket England through
to the Semis and of course I guess the big
upsit Australia being beaten by Afghanistan and Afghanistan winning yesterday.
How cool was that?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (05:03):
It was brilliant, wasn't it. I mean, it's just a
shame that the game took place at one thirty in
the morning UK, so you know, I missed all the fun.
I watched the India Australia game.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know, Rohit.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Sharma, magnificent innings from him. Unusual to see Pat Cummins
and Adam Zamper takes and tap, but they did. And
then of course Travis Head himself was he about to
do it to India again after what he did in
the fifty over World Cup final? He fell just short,
so did Australia was over to Afghanistan. And then what
an incredible game and slightly dubious one as well, to
(05:36):
be told. I mean, you know, t twenty games supposed
to last four hours. It lasted the best part of
seven because of all the rain that was in and
around the area. There was all sorts of shenanigans going
on with Afghanistan ahead of the run rate, the rain
coming in and suddenly fielders falling over with crample, the
coach Jonathan Trot telling them all to go on the
(05:57):
go slow. Pretty unedifying really, But then, of course, after
what Josh Hazelwold said, although tongue in cheek about maybe
going easy on Scotland to knock England out, you know,
there's a little bit of calmer there. But personally, I
just think that the ICC have just been shown up
to be an absolute fascical organization. How can you in
(06:20):
this day and age, especially with a game that's so
afflicted by the scourge of match fixing, How on earth
can you have a tournament where the final stages, the
final group games aren't played at the same time. You know,
it's absolutely gobspacking that you can have a situation where
two teams go into the final stage of this competition
(06:43):
knowing that they could basically contrive to for a result
in the way that Australia Scotland could have and again
Afghanistan and Bangladesh they knew what they needed to do
and that's something that Australia and India didn't have and
something that England and Namibia didn't have because they played
before their group stage rival.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
So ICC need to sort that out. It's absolute disgrace.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
But yeah, as you say, absolutely hilarious, Australia have been
knocked out and England are.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Still in absolutely all right, And you've got a wee
bit on Andy Murray and his injury.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Will he make Wimbledon, Well, we don't know, We still
don't know.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
It was a little bit of a strange one, to
be honest, because he picked up an injury and there
was an announcement he was out of Wimbledon and that
essentially was the end of his career. But then that
tweet was swiftly deleted and was still kind of like
a little bit unsure about whether we're going to see
Andy Murray this year, next year.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
For any year. Wow, alrighty, hey, John, Great to catch
up mate. Must be just about half time in that
England Slavania game.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Yeah, just gone past forty five nil nil still in
fact that is it no added.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Time, so nil nil at halftime.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
As I say, England are through irrespective of what happens tonight,
but they would just love to be able to silence
some of those critics.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
And believe you me, the critics.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
In this part of the world would have been very,
very noisy for the past five days or so.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
I bet they have.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Hey John, nice to catch up mate, Go well yeah,
always good to chat mate.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Touch you next week, John Norman,
