Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold
Sport A long time ago, way back. This joy well,
no drink.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
A can and the name.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Wonderful to be on the show.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Now it is time to catch up with Michael Donaldson,
who's an Auckland based freelance writer and editor who writes
about beer. Got the best job in the world writing
about it and probably tasting lots of it. Michael Donaldson
joins this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Michael.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Okay, Brian, how are we today?

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Very well?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Thank You've been tripping around the country of late looking
at different breweries. So we're going up the far north
to Waipoo today.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yes, and I thought i'd go take us on our
little trip to to Waypoo andand mainly because I think
anyone who's up in the top part of the country
knows that the State Highway one over the brindu and
Hills was closed for many months while they fixed the

(01:11):
whole slips did it? You know, not just from cycling, Gabriel,
but I'm previous to that that you know, it's a
pretty hairy road up that one over the hills, windy
and anyway, it was closed for months and so businesses
up there that was struggling because I didn't have all
the traffic from Auckland that would normally come up. And
it's just reopened. So you know, anyone who wants to

(01:35):
go to Waipou after this and mcclouds you can get
there now. So I mean they did have some detours
and places. It's not the same.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
So so McLeod's Brewery is it.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yes, So it's McLeod's named after nearby McLeod Bay in
that Wipeou area. And of course you may not know this,
or probably will because you're a man of the world,
but whypoo is? You know, everyone thinks Dunedin is, like,
you know, the most Scottish town in New Zealand or

(02:09):
the most Scottish scene. But I think why Poo probably
in some ways lays claim to that ahead of dened
and it was it was sort of settled by Scott's
way way back and there's a I don't know Mcloud's,
you know, they play up on that Scottish Then there's
a bit of Tartan there's a Highland cow and the

(02:30):
logo and they but that's the only Scottish connection the Scottish.
But anyway, so what happened was about twenty years ago
or more. There's a couple of brothers called Clayton and
Jeff Gwynn and they bought this place called the Wypoo

(02:53):
Pizza Barn. So they started McLeod's Brewing and so the
brewery is out the back of the pizza barn. And
they've got an American he's from Vermont in America, Jason Basgate.
It's their head brewer and Jason's like one of the
most respected brewers in the business. He makes truly amazing

(03:16):
and you know, there's nothing that mcclouds do that's not excellent.
I'll tell you that.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah, they're they're really well respected brewer, maybe not as
well known as they should be, because they insist on
wherever their beer goes, it always goes chilled to make
sure it's in the best condition and so it you know,
they won't sell it to anyone who won't look after it.
And when you order from them on their online store,

(03:46):
they only ship on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays because they
never want your beer sort of sitting around in a
career van over the weekend or anything.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Can you get it in supermarkets?

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, widelyailable. Yeah, And
there's a whole lot of that beers that are you know,
won all sorts of trophies and prizes over the over
the years. But they have just done They've got a
beer that's called Paradise pale Ale and it's kind of

(04:19):
it's one of those beers that I always say, you know,
it's the most loved, one of the most loved beers
in New Zealand, and it picks up awards. It's super tasty,
you know, it's just one of those easy drinking five
and a half percent pale ale. You know, everything so
balanced about it. And but just recently they've released what

(04:43):
they call an unfiltered version of it, which is so
it just means it's not sparkly clear like it normally is,
but it's a slightly hazy version of the Paradise pale Ale.
So you have two options. You have the clear version
of a hazy version at the moment to choose from.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
So I like that. I like that. They come in
cans or bottles.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Cans, yeah, yeah, they do do, summon bottles, they do
they have a sort of a top end. It's called
the Smuggler's Bay Collection, and that's more sort of esoterically,
and they come in bottles, but the majority of them
are in cans.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Sounds good, sounds good, So I look out for mcclouds
from wipe Poo.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Mcclouds from Wipoo. Yeah, and I think if anyone is
ever driving north these days, you have to make a
detour again. But the pizzas are definitely worth it.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Washed down with a nice ale. I love it. Yeah, Michael,
nice to catch up mate. Let's do it again next week.
Cheers all right, Bryan.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Five hot seconds? Wow? Oh, I bet you that.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Let's not turn Great Beard Drinking song.
