Herald writer and columnist, and well it's about to board
the big bird to head to Dunedin ready for the
Big Test. We'll touch on the team and perhaps a

But I want to just touch on an article you
wrote for the New Zealand a Herald this week, in
fact yesterday, with the headline provincial union's planning powerheist at
New Zealand Rugby's annual general meeting. Well that's next Friday
at that meeting, isn't it.

Yeah, So this is to explain that story. And look,
this whole governance is dragging. It's going to reach a
new level next week when once effectively happened here is
at the proposal that the unions know. The first step
that they had to do was create what they were
calling a governance Survisory Panel, which would then nominate people

onto the next panel that was going to actually choose
the board members. So you needed to get this g
Governance and Visory Panel up and running. It's the first thing.
They haven't actually been able to do that because of
the Rugby Players Association, the Rugby Maori Board and the
Super Rugby clubs don't want to nominate people to sit
on that board. So the unions are going to use
(01:26):
the AGM to rewrite the proposal so that they can
continue to create this without permission or the buy in
of the three entities that don't want to be part
of it.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
So the resolution has been proposed by just North Harbor,
is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, somebody will need to second it on the day,
but I'd imagine that somebody will do that and then
it will presumably be passed, presumably by vote, and they'll say, yep,
this is how we'll do it. And the reason that
the unions are doing it is they don't want to
get to a stalemate. They can't move forward because if
they can't create this governance lisory panel and they can't
get almost the whole process. So that's why they're doing it.

But look, what it's actually going to do is going
to concentrate power even further and more condensedly into the
hands of the provincial unions and an independent process definitely
not going to be that, because we're going to have
to get to a point where people represent the players,
the Maori Board and the Super rugby clubs without the

permission of the Maori Board, the players and the Super
rugby clubs, and that just feels plain wrong to everybody.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
It really is a sign of just how divided and
fractious the rugby community has become in recent times, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, looks I don't know how this resolves itself. It's
a tricky thing. You could argue, Look, there's been a vote.
Democracy has spoken, the union's got the proposal, everyone should
back it. But there's an alternative argument. How did we
ever get to the point where the unions put a
proposal together in the first place? Is it democratic the
way that you know, there's only one voting member and

that's the provincial unions, And even there the votes have
weighted heavily in favor of the bigger ones. So it's
difficult to know how this will unravel. I don't really
have a crystal ball moment where I can tell you
what we'll be looking at in six months time.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Do you think that Indonedan this weekend there'll be a
bit of lobbying going on.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I hope, I just hope that what we can do
is get back to a world where we enjoy the
big moments that rugby producers ie Test match against England,
magnificent stadium, what matter of the way they're on Saturday night,
we're under a roof. Typically get good rugby down there.
As a result of that. It's a good England team.
You know, they've come here with a with a full squad.
(03:42):
They're not talking about being tired. They're looking to win
the match here for the first time and whatever it
is twenty one years and I look, we've got Razor,
you know, his first game in charge with a whole
new coaching team. I think we might get an epic encounter.
And I think I would like to get back to
world where we start to get more focus on that.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Where rugby is the winner on the day. Right.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, Look, I hope so, because you know, I'm genuinely
intrigued how Racer's team is going to play. I think
selection most of us would probably with one or two exceptions,
picked roughly the same team based on who's in a squad.
But really the interesting part is you know what sort
of rugby do they play on the field? What's he

going to bring to the equation and his coaching team?
Will it be vastly different? Well? Who knows?

Can't wait team gets named at eleven thirty this morning.

Pernharo or Finny Christy.

Oh, I don't they got Quartez? I don't know, to
be honest with you, I like to look at him
young and the other around. I know experience is important,
but to me, Quartez looks like he's the pick of
the bunch, and i'd have the probably Finley on the
bench all right?

In first five? Good one. They're a bit of a dilemma.
We've got d Mac or body Barrett.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Well, look I think it's d Mac because he's earned
the right to be there. Hasn't he been the best
number ten, probably in the Super Rugby bonds being in Japan?
And look, I think Bondon's arguably the best full back,
so he will imagine, I imagine he will play at fullback. Well,
it loves to have been a combination before, albeit the
other way around. So I think that will work. I'm

quite excited to see McKinsey and Barrett playing together again.
