Speaker 1 (00:09):
Well, we're all excited. On Saturday night the kick off
of the twenty twenty four Test season the scott Raiser
Robinson Era, and it started with a sixteen fifteenth shriller
out of forsythe Bar Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday night,
the All Blacks getting up over England. Our man the
grand calling for Gold Sport was Elliot Smith. He joins
us this morning, Elliott, good morning. Will the All Blacks
(00:32):
be happy? And did we get what we expected?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Very good morning to you, b kay. Look, I think
the All Blacks were tight winners in that one obviously,
but they'll reflect on that and go a winner's a
winner's a win in testmatch rugby, and that's all you
need to do, whether it's by one point or twenty
points or anything further than that. I think the All
Blacks will know that it's a Test match they've come through.
(00:55):
Certainly the other bodies will be feeling it in the
wake of that. It was a bruising in counter against
England and for some of the coaching staff that hadn't
coached at that level before, certainly a few lessons around
what it takes to win a test match. Look, it
wasn't the prettiest of test matches, was it. From an
All Blacks perspective. They probably didn't implement their game plan
(01:16):
as much as they would have liked or probably dreamed
about in their planning sessions in the ten days or
so or months before. In some cases they've played this
test in their minds, but it didn't got all to plan.
But they got the win, and that's the most important
thing I think for this All Blacks team is instilling
that sense of belief. The last test, of course, was
(01:38):
the World Cup final last year they lost by a point.
They win this one by a points and start a
new reign with a victory. So if you look at
it on the basis of it, I think the All
Blacks will be relatively happy knowing that they've got more
improvement in them.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Yeah. Absolutely, I mean a win will take it, that's
for sure. So what do you think were the keys
behind the victory?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Any number of things I guess had the keys to victory. There,
you can pinpoint a couple of moments. One of the
keys was probably the fact that England didn't get any
further points after Damien McKenzie was timed out late in
the game for that shot and goal. That was pretty
key for the All Blacks hopes. But I think their
composure in the last fifteen to twenty minutes was just
(02:21):
good enough to beat England, who slightly went off the
boil I felt in that last quarter of the game
and lacked some of the surety that they had either
side of half time. I think that's where the game
might have been well be won and lost. The All
Blacks had the ascendency at scrum time, although went always rewarded.
England probably had the better of them at lineout time.
(02:41):
So set piece, maybe you call it a draw in
terms of that battle around the park fairly even defensively wise,
two tries on the board each, and in terms of
points missed from the tee, the All blacksmiths seven England
is eight. You had those points on as we discussed
when we recorded rugby direction yesterday with my colleague Liam Napier,
that ends up as a draw. So by and large
(03:03):
these two teams were even. But I think the All
Blacks with their composure and the closing stages, and you've
got to give credit to Scott Barrett, Ardsva Jordi Barrett,
the leadership trio for their ability to keep it calm
head and then I think the All Blacks got more
out of their bench than probably England did. One thing though,
just around halftime, I felt the All Blacks kind of
lost their heads a little bit. They were leading ten
(03:24):
to seven. Maybe they felt they had the ascendancy they
had the ball siren went at halftime leading ten seven,
decided to keep playing. It quickly became evidently clear that
they weren't going to weren't getting across the game line.
They were struggling to break England down. In that particular
period of play. The smart decision there would be kicking
into touch. They didn't. England gets a penalty, banged it
(03:45):
over ten all at half time, but psychologically England, maybe
with their noses in front, they started the second half
bet of the tourists as well with that early try
to Emmanuel fa Weiboso. So that tactical wise wasn't the
greatest I think from the All Blacks, but they got
better with their decision making as the game went on.
I think that's a promising sign as they head to
(04:05):
Auckland for the second Test.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
How's TJ Perrianera looking with that knee injury and what
changes could they make for that second Test in Auckland.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
No firm update on TJ peninar As yet to be,
hoping for one a bit later today when the All
Blacks front media for the first time in Auckland. Scott
Robinson as both after the match in Donedan on Saturday
night and then it is wash up media conference the
morning after and didn't have a firm update. T J
Penanara was spotted in the lobby on the Sunday morning,
(04:35):
looked to be walking okay on that injury, but I
would say highly doubtful that he'll be in the mix
for this Test on Saturday nights in Auckland at Eden Park.
So that will necessitate necessitate someone coming in as the
third half back in the squads, and Scott Robinson mentioned
as much yesterday. So that's the decision for them to
(04:58):
make and figure it out. But I'd say it'd see
Finlay Christie start in Auckland on Saturday night, called tes
Rasima will come off the bench and then that third
half back will be added to the squad for how
long We just don't know. We'll find out a bit
later on today. Other changes potentially look I guess that's
Anyone's guests. They might look to put Ethan Blackadder on
the bench, get him some game time this week. I
could see Stephen Petefetter and Boden Barrett switching their roles
(05:20):
the Barrett starts this week, perhaps with the lack of
a roof at Eden Park, that they look to use
Boden Barrett's kicking game a little bit more. But I
think by and large some of the changes to this
All Blacks team will be held back for San Diego
for the Test against Fiji the following Saturday.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Reviewing Saturday's Test with Elliot Smith out of Dunedin and
Elliott will wrap with us those questions kind of a
two part or really what will the All Blacks look
to improve on for Auckland and how will England feel
after that defeat?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well, we touched on one of them earlier. I think
the lineout needs to improve. Maritoji did some work on
the All Blacks there at lineout time. There's the walking
corp again to suffer on will, So that needs to
be sorted out, and you would think probably an easier fix,
easy ish fix for the All Blacks if they can
get that timing right in some of those decisions down
and stop England stealing the scrum. I thought the All
(06:16):
Blacks are dominance there. Probably didn't get the rewards though
necessarily after there and getting that front football, I think
just trying to figure out this English defense and getting
around them. They will know the pictures and they'll know
how to respond perhaps a bit better on Saturday nights
at Eden Park, just to how to get around some
of that defense. We'll have some more answered, you would
suspect when they get to that test. As for England
(06:38):
and what they'll take out of it, well, they'll take
out the fact that they were one point away from
beating the All Blacks and again a missed opportunity down
on New Zealand soil. There's been some close games for
the last twenty one years that played in New Zealand,
but ultimately again just falling slightly short. Now interesting question
comes this weekend, doesn't it, With that record at Eden
Park once again on the line. They'll having not lost
(07:00):
there since nineteen ninety four. England will fancy their chances
if they can improve some of those key facets and
we mentioned that perhaps the last quarter a few moments ago.
If they can get some of those key decisions right
at key times in this Test match, they'll fancy their
chances off turning over the All Blacks and getting that
record the series. You know, the best they can hope
for is one one. They won't get the Hillary Shield.
(07:21):
But if they get head back to England having breaken
that Eden Park whodo that that has haunted a number
of international teams for thirty years exactly, well, that'd be
pretty special indeed, and they'll fancy the chances of doing
so if they can just play that a little bit
better when we get to Eden Park.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Elliot, thanks for joining us this morning. Sorry to get
you up so early. We look forward to your call
this coming Saturday night out of Eden Park right here
on a goal sport for that second Test against England.
There were other rugby internationals too across the course of
the weekend as well, Mark, and some interesting results again.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Yeah plenty. I'll run you through them very quickly. Some
are beating Italy thirty three twenty five Fiji beating Georgia
twenty one twelve, Romania twenty two, America twenty the New
Zealand Moldies lost to the Japan fifteen and that second
and final Test twenty six fourteen the Djoschmitt era with
Australian the Wallabies that started off with the win beating
Wales twenty five sixteen, and then on the early hours
(08:18):
of Sunday morning, South Africa and Ireland played an absolute
barn burner twenty seven twenty, South Africa winning that first
Test and then Argentina hosting France they went down twenty
eight to thirteen and rounding out all the international footy
fourth the weekend Scotland they palmed Canada seventy three points
to twelve
