Speaker 1 (00:00):
The country, sport breakfasts, weekly tea off golf coverage with
Crown Trade up to a new Crown forklift simply the best.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
We're talking golf now on the Show, where yesterday the
three strong key We golf team was named for the
Paris Olympics. Ryan Fox, Lydia Coe and Daniel Hillyer make
the team. Joining us this morning on the Show. Daniel
Hillyer out of Edinburgh ahead of the Scottish Open this weekend. Daniel,
Good morning and congratulations mate.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Hi Ryan, Thanks very much mate. Yeah, I'm very excited
to get the news. And yes, obviously, like you see,
going to be a big few weeks coming up, and yeah,
nice to finish it off with my first Olympics.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Talk us through how you found out that you were
named in the Olympic team alongside Foxy and then with
Lydia Co.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Yeah, I mean it was a bit of a waiting game,
to be fair, but yeah, we had our official announcement
just yesterday and so yeah, a little bit of a
waiting game, but I guess, yeah, you know, they had
some decisions to be made and yeah, I'm just you know,
I was always having my fingers crossed, but Yeah, just
thankful that I was able to find out in the
(01:09):
end that I got over the line. And yeah, looking
forward to to going out and representing New Zealand in
a few weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
And pretty cool playing alongside Foxy. You know, do you
pick his brain while you're playing out there on the
same tour so to speak?
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Yeah, I mean, to be fair, I haven't seen a
lot of them this year. He's been based out in
the US and yeah, he seems like he's found his
feet out there and he's been playing some decent golf.
But yeah, he was out in Munich last week, so
it was great to be able to catch up with
him again. And yeah, we'll obviously be seeing a bit
more of them over the next few weeks in Scotland
and then at the Olympics too.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
So what do you know about the course that you'll
be playing at the Olympics. Is that the Golf National.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Yeah? Yeah, so we actually played the French Open there
last year, so I have had a look at it,
which is which is quite nice. It's not going to
be going to be too unfamiliar, but yeah, it's a
strong golf course and yeah, I mean the Olympics is
a funny one obviously, because you know, you go into
a normal golf tournament and it's you know, you come
(02:11):
away with the top ten or something and you're pretty happy.
But with the Olympics, it's first, second, or third or nothing.
So I guess, you know, it might be a slight
change of game plan going into it as to what
I would for a regular event. But yeah, I've just
got to go out there and obviously make sure you know,
dorm my notes, get the hang of the golf course,
and you just go in and do as well as
(02:32):
I can.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Does the course suit your game?
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Yeah, I like to think so. I mean I didn't
play so great last year, but you know, looking back,
I think I quite easily could have been a lot better.
And yeah, I do like that style of golf course
that will be playing. So yeah, fingers crossed. I can,
you know, put all the pieces together at the right time.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
So, Daniel, your season to date, it's been a bit
of a slog for you, fairly tough out there. You've
made a couple of cuts in the last five events.
What's been the problem with the game of like being
a bit of a struggle?
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, it has been, and I think I sort of
fell into a similar to the situation last year, I guess,
with the bit of a slow start, but you're obviously
looking back on that and even the year prior on
the Challenge Tour, I've said I got to slightly slower
starts that I'd like, And yeah, I guess the main
thing for me is just knowing that golfer is a
(03:26):
funny game and things can change very quickly. And I
found that out well. I witnessed it the last couple
of weeks with the good made of mine Dave mcloosey.
He was not feeling great about his game and then
he found something in Italy a couple of weeks ago,
came away with the top ten and then he's just
finished runner up in Munich a week later. His season
(03:46):
looks completely different. So yeah, it's an interesting one. Obviously
hasn't been going all to plan lately, but yeah, pretty
confident that if I keep doing the right things then
I can get it back on track pretty quickly.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Most definitely a funny old game. A big couple of
weeks for you. As we mentioned, you start this weekend
with a star started field at the Scottish Open. How
confident in your game. Are you heading into to this
event with a field of PGA and DP world stars, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
I mean's it's pretty exciting week. Obviously there's a strong
field out and yeah, I went out to the course today,
had a good luck and it's set up really well.
Felt like my game was actually in a pretty good spot.
So yeah, obviously I just need to go out and
trust it started off with a couple of good rounds
here last year, so got some decent memories to come
back with as well, So yeah, it should be. It
(04:35):
should be a fun week.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
And then you go straight into the one hundred and
fifty second Open Championships out of Royal Troon this year,
so another tough course for you. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah, I mean I haven't played it, but I've heard
that it can be an absolute brute so yeah, I
just I do remember watching i think it's called Chronicles
of a Champion Golfer where Stenson and Michelson had that
so that epic final round and yeah, so obviously seen
a little bit from that and how they played it.
But yeah, I mean it's always you know, different once
(05:09):
you once you actually get out there and experience it
for yourself. So yeah, looking forward to it. It's going
to be going to be a pretty big week and
it'd be nice to have a few days off between
that and the Olympics, just to refresh and get the
mind right for another big one. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
You don't get much of a break, do you after
the open.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, yeah, we get a few days. It's pretty cool.
I've got my fiance over here and my whole family,
so no doubt I'll spend a bit of time with
them over the next couple of weeks. And then yeah,
my fiancee and I we're going to head down to
my bayor in the south of Spain, and yeah, I
have a nice relaxing few days to sort of regroup
and yeah, and then we'll be into the Olympics, which
is pretty exciting.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Absolutely well, Daniel, we wish you the best this weekend
and next, and of course all the very very best
for the Olympics. Thanks for joining us, mate, cheers
Speaker 1 (05:56):
But I appreciated it.
