David Nyika will have to do what no Kiwi boxer has done before and defeat the world class Australian, Blake Caparello, if he is to fulfil his promise and continue his impressive run to a cruiserweight world title.

Having signed a multi-fight deal with global powerhouse DAZN in collaboration with Duco Events, Parker Promotions and Thornberry Promotions, Nyika (9-0, 8KO) will face former WBO world title contender Caparello (32-4-1) in Auckland on September 14. This will prove the first significant test of the Olympic medallist’s credentials.

The classy Caparello’s resume reveals an impeccable record against Kiwi opponents – with Robert Berridge, Daniel MacKinnon, Reece Papuni, Lance Bryant and Jordan Tai all having been dispatched by the Australian.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now welcoming onto the show Ossie Challenger for David Nicker.
It was announced yesterday that David Nicker, the key we start,
is going to put his record on the line against
world class ossie boxer Blake Caperello, who joins us this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Blake, good morning, Good morning mate. Thank you for having
me on.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Absolute pleasure. I love putting that song in front of you.
Actually the box of my Slavona gard fuckl Yesterday I
assaw you guys were taking up the top of Skytower
to make the big announcement, standing in the middle of
winter with just a pair of short sign That would
have been bloody cold mate.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Ye, it was a little bit chilly, but I think
that I was a bit of the nerves of looking
over took away from thinking about the colds.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
So I was like, I just got to survive, not
full off the edge.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
You don't have a fear of heids, mony chance, do you?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Well? I don't have a fear of hides, but it's
not the comfortablest thing to do.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
You didn't leap off the tower afterwards?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
No, I'm not doing that.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Okay, Well, let's find out first off, who is Blake Caperello?
You've been around the boxing scene now for quite a
few years, haven't you.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
I've think I turned pro back in two thousand and nine,
so I've had the thirty seven fights. Yeah, it's been
a long career in the pros. I didn't have much
of an amateur career, but I've always just made up
in the sparring the pro fights. I've always wanted to
be a pro, So here I am.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Living the dream. Yeah, if you want to call it
that you started as a light heavyweight, then you've moved
to cruiserweight division. Was that hard?

Speaker 3 (01:26):
No, because the light heavyweight was getting hard to make
for myself. As I got a little bit older, I've
noticed that the weight was going on more weight each
after each fight and it was harder to take off.
So I think the last fight at light heavyweight, which
I had a loss, it was sort of the message
to me to say, you know what, you got to
move up. Your body's not capable to make it anymore

(01:47):
and to perform at that weight. So cruiseweight's fantastic. Like
I literally walk around at the weight. I just eat, train,
I focus on the game plan. So I'm very happy here.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Well, you're certainly going to bring a lot of experience
into this match. But David think you're really he's putting
his reputation on the line, isn't he. He's a young,
up and coming boxer.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, definitely. Well that's what I've said to him. I go,
there's no pressure on me.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
You guys have all expected to bring me over as
an opponent on the road to David becoming a world champion.
But I'm just trying to put a block in the
road and he'll just have to change the game plan.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
You've got a pretty classy reason when it comes to
fighting Kiwi opponents. You've you've fought a few in your career.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
I actually didn't realize until I got the brief and
then Joe Parker was saying, yesterday I was seven and
zero against the New Zealanders, So I guess it's on
to be eight and oh after September.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
What's the toughest fight you've ever had in your in
your long career.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Oh, it's funny, it's funny. The cove Lets.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Obviously that the toughest fight, even though I didn't go
that long. But like I said to everyone in that
cove Left fight, I actually learned the most I've learned
in any of my fights. It just he just showed
why he's world class and what it takes to get
to that world class level, and the difference from you know,
just under that B grade to the A plus level,
because he.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Was a feared, feared fighter, wasn't he Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Got him in the beast. He's like I got him
just before he fought Bernard Hopkins. They had the fight
signed and we dropped in round one, and yeah, but
An unfortunately couldn't. I just watched around one twelve times
and come off of the victory.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
So you know, what do you know about David Nicker.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
I'll be honest, I haven't watched a whole lot of David.
I know, like they're pumping him up. He had a
big amateur career. He's eight and nine and zero now,
so he's tall, he can use his feet, and then
I think once he gets comfortable he starts putting his
punches together. I just don't thinking it's stop. Like, if
you stand in front of him, he looks good, but

(03:40):
he's also very vue will on his defense. So that's
the quick clips I've watched of him. But obviously, like
I said, yesterday to the guys, I like to focus
on myself. I think if you get caught up in
watching too much of your opponent and it doesn't happen
on the fight night, then what where If you focus
on yourself, you sort of have a rough idea what
the opponent's about, but you can all adapt.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
He's got quite He's got a height advantage on you too,
hasn't he.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah, you know what they said, he's six foot six.
I reckon, I'm gonna put him there in six foot four.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
We're going to talk him up, mate. Yeah, it's a
bit a classic key with you. Aus he met chap mate.
We want to win it.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, that's what they bring it on over But you
know what, like I said, it's going to be eight
and o after that.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
But I still love New Zealand.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Have you fought a lot over here?

Speaker 2 (04:22):
No? This wing to be my first time fighting over here.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Oh wow, Yeah, that's going to be special. September forty
the viaductor Aukward's viaductor Vincenter between now and then, I
believe you're based in La Is that right?

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
I based my camps over in La, so I was
actually in La doing a bit of training keep myself
ready and then this fight come up, so they've flown
me out.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I'll go back for a couple of weeks just to.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Finish off what I was doing over there, and then
I'll do my actual whole camp in Melbourne, because obviously
we're a hop, skip and jump away from New Zealand.
So I've already got the sparring partner sort of lined
up back home and looking forward to it. It's a
big event. It's going to be live on his own,
so yeah, this is huge.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Yeah, it's going to be absolutely messive. You don't have
any fights between now and September fourteenth at all.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
No, unless my wife gets angry at me for keep leaving.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
So Olas, will you base yourself all the time? That's
with your campus? Is that right?

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah? Yeah, I like to. I changed it up a
few years ago. I was actually two years ago. I
found my trainer, Eric Brown, and I just like it
was this a change for me. You sort of get
out of your comfort zone. It brings back those butterflies
when you walk in the gym. You like the new
boy in the gym, so I really enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Well that's fantastic. Well, it's going to be the headline
fight and we wish you all the best of luck.
September fourteenth, the Auckland's Viaductor Vincent So Blake, thank you
for joining.

Speaker 3 (05:40):

Speaker 1 (05:47):

Blake Capparello.

Speaker 2 (05:52):

Speaker 1 (05:54):

we go Blake Copparello again. Stucky we start David Nicker,
