Speaker 3 (00:06):
After the political capital of the US survey. Now Jason
Walls is over there with our New Zealand Prime minister
joins us this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Morning Jason, good morning. How are you very very well?

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Thank you? More importantly, how you It's been a busy
time over there for Chris Luckson, really, isn't.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
It it has? He's just wrapped up NATO.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
So NATO is over for the leaders, although there'll be
a few various different spits and pieces happening in the
next couple of hours, most notably Joe Biraden's press conference
is happening six thirty local time here, so just in
a couple of hours time.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
But this is it's for Chris Luckson.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
He's packed up from Washington and heading to San Francisco
in a couple of hours.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
He chaired the Indo Pacific for meeting. What was that
one about?

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah, it's so.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
New Zealand obviously is not a member of NATO. NATO
is the North Atlantic Alliance between the thirty two countries
that essentially the goal is if you attack one of them,
you attack one of them, and that has become a
lot more relevant these days with Russia. But obviously New
Zealand can't be involved in that because went on the
North Atlantic. So we're part of the Indo Pacific Four,

(01:14):
which is New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
South Korea who basically have a.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Very good working relationship with the NATO Alliance, and New
Zealand chairs that forum. We're chairing it this year with
those countries. And what that meant was that Chris Luxen
was the one that opened the meeting today and had
some initial comments before passing them off to others. And
it was a very interesting meeting because Vladimir Zelenski, who
is the President of Ukraine, came to the meeting and

(01:39):
Chris Luxen heaped a bunch of praise on him, saying
that his leadership had been excellent, and then said that
New Zealand is well there with them in this fight
against Russia and it's doing all it can and actually
called out not just Russia, but North Korea and interestingly China.
He called out China for doing what it has been
doing to arm the Russians in this conflict. So it

(02:00):
was a very brazen, very determined and very focused reference
to the People's Republic of China, which will no doubt
be ruffling a few feathers back home.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Was there any reaction to Luxon calling out China like
that and supporting the Russian invasion, Well.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
We haven't seen it.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Yes, I mean Chris Luckson has argued what he says
privately to what he says publicly about China. He says
to them privately as well, so they likely already know
that he has said these sort of things. However, that's
not the point. More of the point is where he
said it. He said it at NATO. So it really
does seem like there is this cozying up of New
Zealand to these Western allies at their expense of getting

(02:41):
closer to China, which obviously we're very economically reliant on China,
so they might see this as a bit of a
threat New Zealand using the sort of language.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Chris Laxton also has been pressing the fish with all
the world leaders. The new British Prime Minister was there.
I think he spade a even a time with Joe
with that. Joe Biden didn't he.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, he got a couple of moments of FaceTime with
Joe Biden, the emed him at the White House, where
the pair talked about how much Joe Biden liked New
Zealand essentially, so we couldn't glean much out of that.
And then today before the big leaders meeting in NATO,
they did have a bit of a chat and they
posted a photo on face on Facebook and Twitter of
Chris Luxon shaking a very frail looking Joe Biden's hand.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
What's the feeling in DC over Joe Biden? I mean,
will do you think? Do you think he'll he will
stay on as the candidate?

Speaker 1 (03:36):
No, I don't. I don't think he will.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
And it's basically the short answer is the only thing
people are talking about now is his age and how
ineffective he was in that first debate. And since we've
been over here, we've had Nancy Pelosi who has refused
to come out and openly endorse him for staying in
the race, and even more damaging, I think George Clooney
coming out with an op ed in the New York
Times telling him to stand down. And then when you've

(03:59):
got the you know you've got former Batman's telling you
that it's time to hang up your hat. I think
it's probably time that you start assessing the political landscape.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
So you're climbing on a big bird now and flying
to San Francisco. How long is the Prime minister over there?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
For the Prime Minister is just there for a day,
So we get there later tonight, stay there tonight, have
a day of programs tomorrow, and then the media contingency
flies home. And then Chris Luckson is off. I think
he's got a couple of days off before he comes
to New Zealand, but his schedule is quite packed. He's
meeting with Gavin Newsom, who is the California governor, who

(04:33):
is off is somebody that has often tipped as the
next Democratic nominee for president. So if things go belly
up for Joe Biden, tomorrow's meeting with Kevin Newsom might
become quite important.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
All right, well, Jason will get you board the plane now.
I know you're at the airport. Thank you for joining us, mate.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
All good, I'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
