Speaker 2 (00:09):
Time to talk international rugby. Now on the show The
Big One, the second Test between the All Blacks and
England Saturday night out of the Garden of Eden at
Eden Park. Joining us on the CSB this morning, the
man calling the game live here on Goldsport, Elliott Smith.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Morning, Elliott, Good morning from Test Match City Bcat.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah. Absolutely. Actually, Gregor Paul wrote an article in The
Herald actually today and he reckons that the Razor era
only truly begins at the tent for the Test match
at Eden Park tomorrow. Would you agree with that?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah? And I thought it was an interesting piece from
Gregor around that and that's some compelling points. So I
guess that first Test of the year is always a
bit of nervous energy about him. There was certainly more
of that this year given all the changes and the
coaching staff and the captaincy and everything like that. But
it's the second Test when expectations you really set learn
and you're expected to win these matches, and that's where
(01:02):
the all active sort of come a little undone in
recent times, and perhaps you feel a little bit more
comfortable and you get into your systems and realize, actually,
you know this, Irish things pretty good. English team's pretty good.
The South African team, whoever it might be that second
tiest of that, it can be quite quite tricky for
the All Blacks and they're going to be on guard
against all of that tomorrow night at Eden Park.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I've got to admit that I was surprised in the
well there was the very few changes. Only too mate
Finley Christy will start at half back in place of TJ.
Perrenira is out of the squad with the injury in Cortez.
Radama moves to the bench as well. Were you surprised
at the lack of changes.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, I think I was. Look, I think you could
make an argument that there should be in a few
more tweaks or would have been nice to see a
few more tweaks to that team. I guess the teen
again had a feel like compelling performance last week, but
it wasn't perfect by any stricts of the imagination. But
they've given them the opportunity to go out and retify
some of those things that they got wrong, but also
(02:01):
build on the thinking they got right, and that's where
you look at someone like seven per Offester. You could
have made the argument that vote and Barratton is switching
him and a fallback for this test in particular might
have been better with his kicking game and the ability
that he's got there at the back and allow Petter
Feder to make some impact at Eden Park after having
a good starting match last week under the roof and
(02:22):
running a bit more internedent. We could have made that argument,
but have stuck with seven pair of Fetter. It's a
vote of confidence to the young man and giving him
for the opportunity there. Sent Penny Scene now has come
through the week after going off for an ha last week.
He may be a tweak there. You could have seen
a Jacobson or a Blackadder come through, but they've stuck
(02:42):
with the tested formula of last week and given these
players another opportunity. And I think you look at that
and go okay, well, we want to more from these players.
Where we saw a bit from them last week, we
want to see them go on with it last this
week and that's what Maku Scott Robertson has been focused
on this week. He felt there were opportunities last week
that they didn't take the onuses on those players and
(03:03):
take them tomorrow night. And I think there's a feeling
in the All Black scanders that's certainly before half time
last week they felt they were getting the ascendancy in
the Test match. They didn't quite convert a couple of
opportunities in the closing minutes before halftime, and they're ruined
the decision probably to play on a little bit and
think back to last week when they didn't pick the
ball out when they had position. Ultimately England get a
(03:24):
penalty and level the game upheading into half time. So
little decision making like that. They want to be better
at Tomorrow night for the giving largely the same squad
the opportunity to go out and do it.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Do you think we'll see much much different game plan
for Saturday night? I mean we struggled up with their
rush defense, didn't we.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Yeah, absolutely, and look the brains trust of the All Blacks,
Scott Hansen as their defense coach, but also the attack
Leo McDonald and Jason Halm will be tasked with finding
a ways around that and ways they can combat that.
Probably go a little bit deeply love themselves a little
bit more space, just to see where the space in
front of them might be. Potentially, I think they'll play
(04:03):
a little bit deeper tomorrow night, potentially at Eden Park.
Maybe we saw a lot of kicking, especially in the seconds,
so they may look to run it a little bit more.
That is fought with risks of course, and in chances
of turnovers as well. But we didn't see probably a
lot of England over the ball last week. I think
Maro Toji may I've got a steal or two, but
it was not really a key part of their game.
(04:25):
So trying to find ways around that. And I think
that's not just England's. They're playing against every team an
international rugby at the moment, you know, to feel like
that maybe apart from a couple of teams Wallabies Argentina.
You know, the space on the rugby park at the
moment is very very limited and teams are desperate to
find that little yard of space that may exist, and
(04:48):
the defensive systems are so coordinated now compared to what
they used to be, that space is at a premium
on the park. And then it's look at all black. They're
not the only team searching for those answers and trying
to find a way around it. But they've got to
find a way to crack because I've called two tries
in the first half last week none of the second half,
and sixteen points isn't often going to be enough to
win your Test match.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
On the other side of the pitch, England coach Steve Borthwick,
he's just made one change in his fifteen as well,
Harlikin's prop Finn Baxter is going to make his first
England start. So Borthwick also has the faith in his squad,
doesn't he He does?
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Here ye youngster coming in to start. He came off
the bench last week for a debut, now makes his
start and look, I think this is an opportunity for
troll Lomax to try and make a little bit of
statement against the run on debut tom tomorrow night. The
All Black strum worked really well last week. I know
the English have raised a few questions seeing some of
the media late last night around Ethan the group's scrummaging technique.
(05:45):
So Nick Barry will be watching on with that, having
sort of been put under his nose by the England
coach Steve Borthwick over the last couple of days or
at least probably today when they have their referees meeting.
So it's something for to watch out bord tomorrow night,
as have the scrums where if you All Black certainly
got dominant there last week and now England's saying hang
(06:06):
on a couple of those potentially illegal. So the battle
upfront is going to be fascinating tomorrow night. England's very
very young props as have mentioned, have been back in
his early twenties and not often pops play international rugby
that early to Mighty Williams on the All Black side
of things, which are nil. The All Black sort of
a couple of young props as well, but practice chance
for throll the Macks up against them to make a
(06:26):
little bit of a statement tomorrow night to live head
on tight ends and perhaps get some early penalities there.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Thirty years thirty years since the last All Blacks lost
at Eden Park ninety four, falling to a twenty three
twenty loss to France. Can you see that streak coming
to an end tomorrow?
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Oh? Look, possibly on the basis of what we saw
last week one point a narrow margin between the two
sides and England certainly gave it all. You'd hope that
the All Blacks would be better full bat and some
of those things we talked about around the rush defense
and improvements made there that they could you know, score
a few more points and perhaps win by more than
(07:08):
a point. But a point is a point and as
win as a win from perspective. So whichever way they
do it tomorrow night, I think they'll be satisfied to
go to and oh if they possibly can, England will
fancy their chances and that they can rick buy a
couple of those things we talk about the All Blacks
needing to take their opportunities. There were certainly more for
England out there. They left eight points on the park
(07:28):
off the team from Marcus Smith, so there's certain opportunities there.
So look, you know, there's probably a chance of ending
that record tomorrow night, is as many other teams have
tried to too, and they've made a point this week
of saying it's the All Blacks record to protect, and
they've trying to put the pressure way back on the
All Blacks in terms of that even park record rather
than talking about it being who do against visiting sites
(07:48):
but still I think they'd be quite satisfaction if they
can crack that thirty year record tomorrow night. The certainly
chance is doing so they improve so to the All Blacks,
and that's what makes us second test tomorrow night's so fascinating,
doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
And no doubt England will be inspired by their football
team at the Euros.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Yeah, they're watching that in our team room yesterday, I'm informed,
and celebrating the winner over the Midlands. So we'll be
started wanting to get that weekend off to a start
ahead of the final whats some thirty six hours or
thereabouts after it. So the wready talked about that, you know,
wanting to make the perfect weekend for English sport. I'm
sure Bill Blacks will try and know why that as
(08:28):
much they can and make sure it's just perhaps the
football team where it's coming home.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Fantastic Elliott, thanks for getting up nice and early and
chatting to us today, and have a good call tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
It should be k looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Elliot Smith joining us here and of course live commentary
here on Gold Sport and iHeartRadio from six. The build
up starts from six tomorrow night for all that action
