Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's gun boots or rugby boots. The Country Sport
Breakfast has you covered on gold Sport your home of
live commentary.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
All Right Live Commentary. Saturday Night out of Eden Park
was the All Black match against England and the All Blacks.
Of course, the thirty year unbeaten run at the Garden
of Enn remains intact and put nervous for a while
there after. Twenty four to seventeen went over England on
Saturday Night, joining us part of our commentary team. Former
All Black and now commentator as well.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Frank Ones Morning, Frank, good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Did you enjoy that role as a commentator?
Speaker 1 (00:33):
I did? I did? Actually, you know, I've put a
long time out of the game, to be honest, but
you know I said, I I mumbled my works a
little bit and I think I've got a couple of
names wrong too. You know, I'll lease my way back
into it.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Apparently the team he gave you a passer. You're okay, mate,
you get you get to call another day. So let's
talk about the match in Bowden Barrett. First off, he
was incredible. Can you see him being the X playoff
off the bench going forward? Or do we do we
need body Barrett in the starting lineup.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Gee, that could go either way actually that you know
the answer to them. He's obviously you know, he's on
one hundred and twenty plus test matches, so he's got
all the experience in the world. I don't think I
don't think he'd be you know, certainly out of place.
He come on, he pres proven, but you know many
times before he's come off the bench in the spark,
(01:29):
you know, something and spark to revival, you know, or
even one game for us. So I think he'd put
into into either role easily enough. You know, the pride
in him probably wants to start. But you know, I
think I think it's horses for courses, to be honest,
And would you start.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Him at in a tenor of fifteen Jersey as well?
I mean, he's pretty.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Good, isn't he He is. He's very good. I've always
preferred him as a as a fifteen. Actually, you know,
he used to, especially when he was younger, a little
bit younger, and you know, he would he'd he'd come
into the back line, he'd inject, you know, he had
he had all the pace in the world and the
vision and you know, I think he just got a
few more opportunities, you know, out in the open when
(02:11):
he was a fullback. It's you know, up there's a
lot of traffic around, we'll say, when you're up closer
to the you know, to the Fords. So maybe he
just didn't didn't have as many opportunities at ten as
he said at fifteen. But me personally I like him
at fifteen. Although in saying that, Will Jordan's about to
come back, so you know.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
So it's quite good. We've got we've got some choices,
haven't we really, which is.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Great, Yeah, exactly. Choices are always good.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, absolutely, all right. So one glaring issue from the
game on Saturday, and you probably know I'm going to
bring it up the lineouts. I haven't seen the old
black lineout like that for a long long time. What
do you put it down to?
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Well, yeah, well that's the problem. You know, I'm not
an expert in lineout, but you know, it was it
can be a million things, It can be a million
different things. You know, was it the throw? Was it
the timing of the jump? Was it the communication? You know?
And you've got to give credit to Marrow with Toji,
you know, who had he also hit the game of
his life, you know, and he was disrupting everything. So
(03:09):
you know, there's so many things that it could be.
But you know, and you can't blame you can't blame
Cody Taylor because he's again he's played you know, almost
one hundred tiers matches as well, so you know, he's
maybe had the wobbles every now and then, but it
hasn't been a problem throughout his career. So you know,
I'm sure they'll be putting a whole lot of emphasis
(03:29):
on that during during the week and then they'll figure
it out. But you know, I don't have an answer.
It could be a million things.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah, absolutely, they'll certainly be working on it, that's for sure.
We had a deby talented Cortez Retima All Black number
twelve hundred and fourteen. What did you make of his
twenty minute cameo?
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Well, awesome, awesome. I think he came on just before
Burden Bear It. But you know, he he's slotted and
just you know, just like that, and I think he
provided initially the energy, you know, the balls faster, the
you know, the clearance of the ball from you know,
from the rucks and malls and the like. Was a
lot snappier, and you know, he just provides a you know,
(04:09):
another threat. So you know, I think that was the
guy that sort of opened things up a little bit,
and then Body came on and you know and kind
of finish it off. You know, I think he can
be very proud of of, you know, what he's done.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Looking back at the game with Frank Bunce, was there
a point in that game, Frank that you thought that
that thirty years streak at Eden Park was going to
come to an end?
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Yes, yes, there was.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Really.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
I was actually going to I was actually going to
say something, but I looked up at the clock and
there was only about ten or fifteen fifteen minutes say
gone in the second half, So I thought, well, it's
a little bit early. I like, you know, I was
going to make the court. I don't think we're going
to win this game. But then I looked up and
I thought too early to call that, So I'll keep
my mouth shut.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
You've got to take your head off to the English, though,
don't you. I mean, they came to play and they've
play brilliantly.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Oh yeah, yeah, from you know, from where they were
prior to the World Cup. You know, they were in
a shambles back then and to where they are now.
You know, they're one of the top teams in the
world again, and you know English rugby is never really
down for that long. So these guys in particular, and
they've got a young team, they've got some they've got
some stars and real stars there in the making out
(05:24):
in the backs as well as I think the loosewards
mostly and and then a couple of the type forwards
were you know Oji especially, Yeah, the.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
World class standout. I mean, he was just absolutely brilliant.
So two tests sprank into the Scott Robertson era. What
have you made of the start of the new era
of all black rugby?
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Well shaky. I heard Scott Robertson gave himself a past
mark and I think I think that's fear. But you know,
I think also that that group, because you know, the
coaching and management group, a whole lot is you. So
you know, there's a lot to learn and and it's
been said a million times, you know, for test match
rugby is is a step above and you know, a
(06:09):
step above again super rugby. So I think they're finding out,
you know, exactly what it takes but two wins against
a very very good English team. You've got to say
that that we're pointed in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
And of course we jump on a plane today. He
had to say, diego to pay play Fiji. I guess
that'll experiment a bit with the A B side over there,
don't you think.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, I think you know, you've got to give You've
got to give some of the other squad members some time.
You know, it's it's all good doing all the training,
but you need to run out on the field and
and Fiji, you know, they've they've improved the hell of
a lot over the over the years, a lot more consistent.
You know, they're going to provide a whole different challenge.
So yeah, yeah, he'll use a squad, but you know
(06:52):
he's going to be expecting, expecting more, you know, from them.
We've got to move on. We've got to you know,
we got past the challenging now we've got to, you know,
if we're going to make sure that we're up for
everything else.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Absolutely well, Frank, it's great to have you on the
commentary team along with with Pinney and Elliott Smith mate.
So we'll be listening out for more calls from you.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Fantastic beautiful now yeah now, my challenge is to get
the Fijian team list and start practicing.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
You got a week. You've got a week to do it, mate,
You've got a week to do it.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
The players, they better not name their team on Friday
afternoon or anything.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Good on you, Frank, have a good way, Frank Buns
joining us and of course we'll have a commentary of
that match too with the All Blacks and Fiji
