Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
A long time ago, way back.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Well, they drink nothing but custantine at the name.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Wonderful.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Oh with that jaunty little ballad from the Clancy Brothers.
That mean we're going to talk about beer. The man
that produces the beer magazine The Pursuit of Happiness. Michael
Donaldson joins this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Michael, Okay, Brian, how are we doing very well?
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Thank you? No, I believe today's feature brewery comes out
of christ Church, a bit of an institution down there.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
That's right. Yeah, I'm the Three Boys they're called, and
it's they've got a great little logo of three little
stick figures on there on the on the labels of
the beer of Three Boys. And look they've been around,
you know, I would hazard a guess, like nearly twenty years,
(01:04):
and they're very much part of the fabric of the
christ Church beer scene and just I guess christ Church culture.
If you go to christ Church, you'll see Three Boys
beers pouring all sorts of restaurants and bars, and they're
very focused on their local area, which is I think
is a really good thing. You know, like they're not
trying to be They're not trying to conquer the world.
(01:25):
They're just proud christ Church Brewery. And the thing that
I want to talk about with them is because the
weather has just gone so damned cold. I think it's everywhere,
even here in Auckland.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
You get that in winter though, you do get that
in winter, yeah apparently.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
And so I've got a real winter warmer for you.
So three boys make a beer called oyster stout, and
and you might think, yeah, right, it's not got oysters
in it, but in fact it does have bluff oysters
in it. The curious thing about oyster stout is, well,
according to the beer legend, a guy called Michael Jackson,
(02:11):
who is not the Michael Jackson who did this thing
and in dancing, But there was a British beer writer
called Michael Jackson, and he was known as the Beer Hunter,
and he researched a lot of old styles and he
reckoned that oyster stout was actually invented in New Zealand
down in Chicago.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
So well, would you surprise me?
Speaker 2 (02:34):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:34):
No.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And like the whole idea of putting shellfish into beer,
it's not that unusual. I don't know who thought of
it first, but you know, he yeah, but it's so
what you get is this really sort of delightful, you know,
sort of salted chocolate, salted caramel kind of flavor profile.
(02:58):
So you've got a lovely rich up with all those
kind of chocolate and coffee and caramel flavors and just
a little brainy note from the oysters, and it's remarkable.
You know, it's one of those things you think it
shouldn't work, but it's absolutely delicious.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So is that available? I mean you can obviously get
it in christ Church. Is it available around the country, Yeah,
it is.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
They're not everywhere, so as I say, they a few
years ago, Three Boys would have been a sort of
a national brand, but I think they saw the writing
on the wall of sort of freighting out of the
South Island and they sort of retrenched or withdrew a
little bit to focus on their local area. But you
(03:40):
still see them around the traps, definitely around the South Island.
But if you really want to try an oyster stout
with a lot of these breweries, jump on their web
store at three just google Three Boys and go to
the shop and I think it's about six dollars fifty
for a a wee bottle of it three thirty mili
(04:02):
bottle six and a half percent, and given the process
involved in making it, it's a pretty good price because
it's a fairly labor intensive business and they do it
every year, you know, So they get the oysters in
sort of you know, April May and start broom with
it and it comes out about this time of year,
(04:23):
so it's an annual release. So it's well worth exploring
if you want to test your taste buds a little bit.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Absolutely so look out for three boys and their oyster stout.
That's one nice one, Michael, good to catch up. Let's
do it again next week.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
All right, Bright, the furious bar that punches, pumped the
hole in the wall and well, oh wonder you can
be shown
