Farmers are being encouraged to install crush protection devices (CPDs) on their quad bikes to
help reduce harm on farm with the launch of the Safer Rides new incentive programme.
From 2019 to 2023, there were 22 quad bike-related fatalities in New Zealand, most involving
rollovers and steep grades.
Now, Safer Farms, Rabobank, ANZCO Foods, LIC, Craigmore Sustainables and PGG Wrightson
have teamed up with retailers Trax Equipment and Quadbar to offer a discount of up to 75 per
cent for the CPDs.
The devices provide space underneath an upturned quad bike by spreading the weight of the
bike and either creating space for survival or allowing the bike to roll off the occupant.
The incentive programme is being led by Safer Farms, the industry-led organisation dedicated to
leading and inspiring a safer farm culture throughout New Zealand, to ultimately prevent injury
and fatality on farm

For it's gum boots or rugby boots.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
The Country Sport Breakfast has yet covered on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary. Well, the past year has
been one of our deadliest yet for ATV related fatalities
on farms in New Zealand, with the majority involving rollovers. Well,
farmers are being encouraged now to install crush protection devices

(00:22):
cpds as they're called on their quad bikes and there's
been an incentive launched to help farmers do that, joining
us a wide en app of farmer and farm without Harm.
Ambassador Lyndy and Nelson.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Morning, Lindy, good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
You've launched this incentive, so tell me all about it please.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Well, we've launched it with our partners rabobank, Ensco, Lic,
Craigmore and PGG Write Since plus the two retailers who
make this clips, and by partnering with these people we've
been able to offer half the cost will be covered
by them. So it's phenomenally exciting when opened my spreadsheet

(01:04):
this morning to see the uptake of these vouchers, Almost
half of them are gone and the overwhelming and that
they're saying cost has definitely been a barrier farmers value safety,
but cost has been prohibited, particularly for us. She can
bee farmers. The first two ups that went yesterday break

(01:26):
my heart. Two farmers. One had lost a father and
another one had lost two close community members. So this
stuff matters, and it matters to us as farmers, and
this is a fantastic initiative to get these crush protection
devices out there on farm and people having a little
bit of peace of mind when they.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Come home at night, because as I mentioned last year,
the past year was our deadly as she had in
fact in since twenty nineteen to twenty twenty three something
like twenty two quad related fatalities in New Zealand. That
is just a lot on, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
It's huge And unfortunately this share looks like it's going
to be our deadliest yet. So I think we're sitting
around at twelve already, so that it's sobering. It's it's
very sobering. We know in terms of accidents and incidences,
the more stress we have will increase your chance by
thirty percent, and there's a lot of stress out there.

(02:23):
So we want farmers if they fail to fail safely.
And the old view of safety was always sort of
pay more attention, you know. So we're human and we
make mistakes, and our cars are kitted with some great
safety devices. Unfortunately we don't have those on quad bikes.
So this is a way to reduce the risk in

(02:46):
the event of a rollover, create a space to survival
and get home to your family.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
And it's really really encouraging to know that the uptake already,
as you mentioned, has been, has been quite phenomenal.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yep. And I think that's you know, we've been trying
just tell stories of farmers and I think that is
absolutely helped. This is such an easy way, you know,
you click on to the website, click on to receive
your coupon, and there's choice and as somes, we like choice.
And I know when we installed them with our team,

(03:18):
we set the team down, we gave them some options
and you know, they picked a variety of ones to
think about what would suit them, the dogs, all of
those type of things, and I think that's important.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
So there are a variety of these role the CBDs
that you can actually attach the bikes, aren't there.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
There's two main manufacturers in New Zealand and they have
a variety, I guess of different designs. So you know,
one is you know the big hoop, the lifeguard that
goes right around the top. You know, we have one
of those on our farm. But we also have one
of the I think they have the quante bar or something.
So you know, it's good to have that choice and

(04:04):
think about it. But you know, it's interesting some of
the from them being brought by wives or partners that
go my husband works alone. I'm at home worried. I'm
going to have a little bit of peace of mind.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Now, Yeah, because squad bikes, I mean, they're an amazing
They're an amazing workhorse on the farms, aren't they aren't they?
So they should be safe for the farmers to use.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
You've hit the down on the head there. Amazing workhorse.
And if I think in my time of farming, you know,
you three hundred was sort of that was a massive machine.
Now you have you know, bikes that around could be
eight hundred kgs and they are workhorses. So they're just
not transportation. And I think that's the key point is

(04:49):
that they are this big piece of kurt a lot.
So how do we do that without risk to our life?

Speaker 2 (04:58):
So if farmers want apply for the CPD discount code.
Where do they go, Linda.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
They go to the farm with our harm our website
and there is a landing page there. Click on it
and you're straight in and then you click on your
coupon and that.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Gives you what one hundred percent, there's one hundred discount vouchers.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
For the skin, one hundred discount vouchers and up to
four hundred dollars off depending on what you know. So
that's that's less than half if your depending on what
you're choosing. And it's it's great that the industry has
come together got some money there. You know, some of
these are farmers, some of these are our suppliers. They
value our lives and I think that's a great story.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Linda, you're doing a great job. Thank you so.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Much for that pleasure. Thanks very much, Nation Chat.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
And it's great to have Rubber Bank on board along
with Ansko Food's, Lac Craigmore Sustainabilities and PGG Rights and
who've got right in behind this, along with the retailer's
Tracks Equipment and Quadbar to offer a discount of up
to seventy five percent for the for the CPD. So
that's an amazing discount as well, So let's get all

(06:09):
those quad bikes fitted with those devices.
