Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the rugby field to the rotary shed.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Time to hit to the UK now on the show
Kid twice today, but this time we're going to Nottingham
ahead of the second Test for England Talks about Cricket.
Editor and presenter of the Follow On Cricket podcast, Johnny

(00:23):
Norman joins us.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Morning John, Yeah, good morning to you mate. Hope Aul's well.
Greetings from Nottingham where. Yeah, the second Test getting underway
at trent Bridge tomorrow is always it's one of my
favorite Test matches of the summer when Nottingham is given
a Test because it's one of the most picturesque grounds
in the country.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Always a good crowd as well.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
All we can hope for is a little bit more
of a contest than we got in that first Test
match between England and West Indies at Lord's which was
over well before the halfway point of the Test match.
Actually it was pretty poor. Fair as we bid. Farewell
to Jimmy Anderson.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, so there'll be no Jimmy Anderson. It'll see rather odd, really, won't.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
It will it will?

Speaker 1 (01:06):
He's been the mainstay of the side. Well, he made
his debut twenty one years ago. He was kind of
in and out of the side for about four or
five years, but pretty much ever since about two thousand
and eight he has been, if not the first name
on the eleven, certainly in and amongst it. So, yeah,
his first match since being forced to retire. He's still

(01:29):
with the team. He's a mentor now, so essentially he's
there for all the other bowlers to see counsel from,
which will be I mean, could you think of a
better bowler to get to learn a few tips from.
So he's got a new role. But yeah, it's going
to be a bit strange to see two completely new
bowlers take the new ball when you consider Stuart Broad

(01:50):
also retired last year.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
How's the weather looking, that's the important thing. You haven't
had a great summer?

Speaker 3 (01:55):
No we haven't. But guess what.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
My father in law arrives at from New Zealand in
London tomorrow at half past six, just as we are
getting a mini heat wave. Can you believe it? It's
actually going to be sunny for the next two or
three weeks. So what timing for him as he makes
a long trip over from Auckland fantastic. Alrighty well, I've

(02:18):
got to mention this that football is not coming home.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
How's it gone down?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Well?

Speaker 1 (02:24):
With a sense of resignation really, And I say that
with one eye to Gara Southgate, who's done exactly that
and stepped away from the from the big job. I
think that there was a feeling that England had rode
their luck a little bit. They hadn't exactly set the
tournament alive or a light. Rather, they'd on route to
the final, missed some of the big guns. They didn't

(02:47):
have to play France, didn't have to play Germany, didn't
have to play Portugal. And what always seems to happen
at these major tournaments is England essentially get knocked out
when they come up against the first really good side
that they have to face. So it's not quite the
desolation that we experienced four years ago.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Was it three years ago? Because the COVID.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Can't remember either way, When England were knocked out by
Italy on penalties, that was really seen as a missed opportunity.
This one slightly different because Spain with a better side
on the night and they've won every single one of
their games.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
You know, you can't really.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Argue with the style of play, the results and at
the end of the day the fact that they were
just too good for England on the night.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
And England are now looking for a new geffer and
with Gareth Southgate well resigning. Really so, who do you
think who's the hot top for England soccer manager?

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Well, I think that there's a lot of people in
this country who would absolutely love Jurgen Klopp to step in.
I think that's somewhat unrealistic. He's always been a club manager,
He's only just stepped away from one high profile job,
and the idea that he could do with England what
he did at Liverpool.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Is I don't know, somewhat fanciful.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
There's also the feeling that, you know, the captain or
raither the manager of the England team does need to
be English and if that is the case, and Eddie
Howe at Newcastle, I imagine the FA will be keen to
speak to him and then possibly Another name that's been
mentioned is Graham Potter, formerly of Brighton where he did
really well and Chelsea where he did less well. You know,

(04:26):
he's another name that has been mentioned in dispatches, so
early days. But yeah, the hunt for the new England
manager has just started.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Wasn't a great week in for England. Really, I should
mention the All Blacks and England that rugby test out
of Eden Park. England certainly played very well, didn't they.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Well they did, they did play well.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
I mean we spoke after the first Test where there
was a real feeling that they missed an opportunity, mainly
from the boot of Marcus Smith. This time round again
another missed opportunity leading in the second half, New Zealand
looking fallible. Line out's an absolute mess. And yet still
despite the fact that New Zealand didn't look anywhere near

(05:12):
as good as they have done it at points over
the last ten to fifteen years, the introduction of Boden
Barrap just changed the game, didn't it. And so yeah,
it will lose to nil, but it was so close.
So yeah, sense of frustration really because just like last week,
it just feels like we let one slip away.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Well, John, enjoy the cricket in Nottingham and we'll talk
again next week mate.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yeah, look forward to it, mate. You take care.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
