It is eighteen after one of very good morning to
you as we begin our Paris Olympics coverage right here
on Gold Sport and iHeartRadio the games of the thirty
third Olympiad. Around ten thousand, five hundred athletes from around
the globe have descended on Paris and other parts of
(01:12):
France as well, and throw Tahitian for good measure as well.
For the once in a four year cycle that culminates
with the Olympic Games, a chance to win gold, silver
and bronze. We've got a great commentary team lined up
for you to join us over the next two and
a half weeks to bring you every heart stopping moment,
(01:34):

on Gold Sport and iHeartRadio. We begin our coverage with
the sevens very shortly. The opening game featuring Australia and
some more in the men's competition is about eleven minutes away.
The feature of our coverage this morning three am the
New Zealand Olliwhites men's football in action against Guinea from
(01:58):
three in Nice. And we also have the New Zealand
men's sevens team in action at both four am against
Japan and seven point thirty against South Africa nineteen after
one on Gold Sport and iHeartRadio. Very much looking forward
to your company through the week small hours over the
next couple of weeks. Let's set the scene though, first
and foremost, get an idea of Paris on the ground.
(02:22):
Let's head to our reporter, New Zealand Heralds Michael Burgess. Michael,
if you be so kind, set the scene for us
house Paris.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Oh, it's been fantastic Earlier, I mean there has been
a bit of ambivalence about from the locals about this games,
but as always happens, now that we're two days away,
there's just excitement. The newspapers are full of covers that
are the front page of all the papers is all
about the Olympics. There's DuPont on the cover, there's the
football players, there's all these predictions about how good France
is going to go in this games. The weather's great,
(02:54):
so it feels like, you know, I think this is
going to be amazing Olympics and it is a perfect
city to have it. I love the venues. I think
it's going to be really good games for New Zealand,
and I feel like the excitement is building.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
The other thing to.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Note is that they're in contrast to say Rio or Tokyo.
There are so many fans and tourists here. You know,
they're talking about Paris about two million people. They're talking
about another eight nine million people coming during the Olympics.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
So there's just people everywhere.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
And I think that will add something quite special that
we didn't really see and we've probably been seen since London.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Indeed, with that though become it comes obviously increased interest,
but also increased security. What's the vibe like on the
ground in terms of that.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
It's probably the most I've ever seen to be honest,
Like I was in Beijing and there was a lot
of security, and they're pretty stern security, the old Chinese police.
And I've seen security so the Russian World Cup and
Qatar was tough at times or there, but this is
the most I've ever seen, you know, arrive at the
(04:00):
airport and there's police there with I mean you've seen
it to early, with machine guns with their fingers on
the trigger. I went for a war class night, I
walked past seven or eight army guys who looked all
about under twenty five, all the machine guns.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
There's police everywhere.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Even when I went in my jet Lag state for
a bit of a run slash walk the other morning
past this park and there's two army guys guarding all
the park entrances, again with guns. So they're just not
taking any chances. But I'm finding it, like you feel
quite safe because the police and the army they're very
friendly if you're friendly to them.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
So you know, I think, I think it's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
The other thing you'd say, but Paris is they're kind
of used to it because they had those terrible incidents
about was it ten to fifteen years ago, so you know,
it is high security, but it's not something that you
feel is suffocating.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
That's good to hear.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Obviously, football and New Zealand's seven's campaign get underway a
couple of days before the opening serum. Only you gout
with the New Zealand men's seven steam well, both of
the seven teams a couple of days ago. It's the
men who get underway first, of course, So what sense
did you get from there about their readiness to take
on this challenge and perhaps so win a first gold
medal for the men.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
I felt there was some quite quite confidence, I really did.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
I like what Tamasi Tuma was saying the coach, and
I just like the fact this team, like every New
Zealand ten, they've got a really nice mix of flair.
They've got pace and they've got physicality, so they've got
different ways to play. They've got a lot of respect
for their opponents. And the coach and players made the
point unlike the you know, if you look at the
(05:37):
woman's draws or the women's competition a bit different, but
the men's is very deep. You know, you got Argentina
or an amazing team, you got Ireland, you got South Africa,
the ones for me to watch out of France though,
because I think the point needs to be made that
the last two Olympics, of course we had Brazil the
host nation and then Japan. Now we've got a gun
(06:00):
team at home and the French.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
If you see the.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Newspapers today, they're going crazy about the fact that du
Pont is in the team.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
He's seen as the savior.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
This is redemption for French rugby and there is so
much excitement out there that.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
They are favorites here.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
They are favorites to win gold because of him now,
and that's what journalists are saying, that's what locals are saying.
So I think it's going to make the competition so
good because to play the host nation in the pack
stadium is going to be fantastic.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
But I would not write off the New Zealanders.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
I think they're a very good team and if they
just get some momentum, I think there's definitely a chance
of a podium.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Incredible amount of drama going on in the football world
as well with the football fans, but it's the men
who take to the field a bit later on this
morning against Guinnea. What do you expect from the New Zealand.
The Ollie Whites.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Don't go well.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
It's a younger team, it's even younger that we saw
in Tokyo. But remember in Tokyo they made quite a statement.
They won their first game. They qualify for the quarterfinals
for the first time. I like the look of this team.
I think Basley's going to go with a very attacking lineup.
They know this is the game. They need a positive result.
This is this is the big one. Guiney will be
good though. They beat Argentina the other day, so any
(07:14):
team who beats Argentina at this level is good. But
the idea, idea would be a win today and then
you try and jag a result against France or the
USA and you're into the quarterfinals. So yeah, I think
the Olie Whites there's a quiet determination. They don't have
Chris Wood, but I really like the look of Ben Wayne.
I like the midfield they could have. They've got a
solid defense. I've got Alex porson and goal. So I
(07:37):
think they will do well in Paris.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
And before we let you go, Michael Burgess, how's the
food been so far? Have you had is cargo? What
have your samples?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
I did sample one is cargo. Yeah it was. It
was Okay.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
There's been a lot of sort of eating on the run,
but I've probably had too many pastries. They are quite
sensational and just yeah, the food is the food. The
food's good, really enjoying, but mainly enjoying to be honest, Elliot.
(08:15):
It's my first time in Paris, and I just think
the city is incredible. You walk around every corner and
it's like everything you imagine in a movie or a
movie or TV you've seen. You know, it's just the cafes,
the bars, the local sipping their coffees, the style. It's
just an incredible city. So that side of it makes
it quite special.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Well, soak it all up. Look forward to your reports
on the New Zealand here all down with us here
on gold Sport over the next a couple of weeks
from Paris. So, Michael Burgess, thanks for your time.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Oh thank you, Elliott.
