Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk YOUBC rugby now and I'm going to heat
up to the beautiful Central Target, albeit a bit fresh
this morning, and catch up with Paul Allison.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning, Paul, Oh Craig, you wonder what he's on it?

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Yeah, I have to be fair next you wee bit
warm in the studio, Paul, but I've got a head
to the Egga Center, which you know here and Deneeden
is always very cold, even on a good day.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
All right, Well, there's a lot of white stuff around
in central Otago this morning. Is this sort of descended
south across the country and we saw it the weekend.
How much of an impact that had on the playing
conditions of the Bunnings MPC quite a few matches was
really difficult for players and spectators. And the numbers that
attended many of these games were pre sparse, indeed. But
it already started on Friday night at forsythe Bath, Dady,

(00:39):
And when Otago got that upset win against Auckland, against
many people's productions including mine, not mine, no, no, not yours.
You got that crystal ball.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
I am you're not a very good TB sports bit
of Paul, you know that. And I don't do very
big bets, but that one for some reason, my idiot,
you know, I don't know. IM back to Targa and
I won.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, well they worked really hard to do that. I
was so impressed with will Start. I think he's only
twenty years of age and he had to come up
against the kiriy Yuani and this young man he's got
some real promise and he worked really hard, as did
many of the Otago team. It wasn't a clinical performance,
but Auckland never really sparked up an Otago. They haven't
beaten Ukin since two thousand and eighty and got a
very very hard earned win. Makes it difficult for Auckland

(01:22):
now because they take on Canterbury next Saturday afternoon at
Eden Park at four point thirty five and then Nune
from two. They could go none from three and here's
a union that hasn't won the MPC for it for
some time and they're languishing down on thirteen spot at
the moment, so they need to reverse things pretty quickly
really if they want to force their way back up
the table. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Absolutely, I mean it's the great thing about you know,
MBC rugby a game the Tiger lost to Southam, but
it looked like actually that game they've been given the ultimatum,
if you don't front up physically, you might not front
be given opportunity next week. And they certainly hold in
put and we swept, not a very big crowd. But
then you have the other one. This is always a
big the battle of I suppose the top of the
South Island Canterbury taking on Tasman, but Tasman got the

(02:05):
bragging rights twenty two points to seven.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, they haven't won for a while against Canterbury seven
Ai really good early on and then Willie really so
good with his boot five penalty goals. They led by
thirteen to nil at half time at Trafalgar Park and
never really looked in danger of conceding that match to
their neighbors, the Crusader's neighbors. It's basically like a Crusaders
trial just about without the all blacks. And so that's

(02:28):
a good win for Tasman. Puts them now in fourth
spot on the table, unbeaten so far, and they do
look like they are going to be serious contenders this year.
Also on Saturday afternoon, Northland too good against Manowa to
at seven off Stadium in Fungar eight seventeen three at
half time for them, and that gives Northland also a
spot in the top eight, remembering they have quarter finals

(02:51):
this year as well. And it's interesting you look at
that table at the moment and seven of the teams
in the top eight all made it through last year
into the quarter finals. Sort of wonder whether or not
those early signs. They needed at least five wins out
of the ten games to get through last last year,
and I think that's probably you know, I need five
or six wins out of your ten to get through
this year. So another team that has started so so

(03:14):
well as they have plenty. They had that midweek win
and now they've got three from three after a hard
win against Harbor yesterday again in difficult conditions and they
got the spoils. Harbor picks up a bonus point. But
I've got to give mention to South and you talked
about them last week and they went up to Hawks
Bay on Saturday afternoon to take on the shield Holders

(03:35):
in McLain Park and they scored early and they looked good,
but they're handling met them down and they conceded a
try just before halftime which was really quite pretty had
a big impact on their on their chances, I believe,
and then they got within range, but they kept on
going for the seven points instead of taking the three,
and you can argue that if you want to win

(03:56):
the Shield, you've actually got to score more points in
the opposition as opposed to staying close. And then hawks
Bay got away with a late try to deny Southland
a bonus point which would have been valuable for the
chances this year. So it was a hard match for Southland.
They did contest really really well, but hawks Bay just
keep on keeping on and sitting second on the table,

(04:18):
one beaten so far, so they're looking good. Wellington, well
they had to come from way way back against Taranaki
who won last year. Again that finally against Hawks Bay,
Taranaki led by nineteen to five and dreadful conditions. Well
what do we know? It is Jerry Collins Stadium at
Pira Ruver Park. But Wellington twenty one unanswered points and
really really awful conditions Julians av touching down twice and

(04:42):
Wellington get the spoils twenty six to nineteen pick up
a bonus point as well, so they are one of
the four undefeated teams along with Bayer Plenty, Hawks, Bay
and Tasman. And then in the last and then Whitecadow
against County's manacout picking up the win. Counties Menicaw getting
a bonus close at half time nineteen seventeen to White

(05:03):
Cat only one try in the second half. But really
you look back on this round you'll think, well, Auckland
getting beaten, probably the upset Hawk's Bay hanging onto the
shield and the weather conditions having a major impact throughout.
And then you look to next weekend Otago take on
Bay have Plenty who are unbeaten. That Sunday afternoon we
talked about the match on Saturday Auckland against Canterbury Friday

(05:25):
night the shields on the line against Northland who are
doing pretty well with their win as well. So that's
an interesting mix that we've got in the MPC and
the Bunnings after just two complete rounds.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, I'll throw some stones we can from
the deep South. I mean, what's going on with rugby
in the North. I mean thirteenth place. You've got Auckland,
twelfth Counties, Monacau and Live in North Harborporl. There's things
and the whales are falling off up top.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Maybe it's post Olympic blues or is it that storm
that's racing through the country and making things difficult. It'll
be interesting to see whether or not the crowds do
pick up, because we know that the MPC is under pressure,
is post Olympic blues where everyone's been so captivated with that.
We had the All Blacks match against Argentina and Eden Park,
even that wasn't a complete sellout, so you just sort

(06:09):
of wonder whether this competition might take a few weeks
to sort of get a bit of momentum going. I
think there was twelve hundred at forsythe Bar Stadium according
to the official numbers, which seemed like a large percentage
of those probably sat in the corporate box. And that's
an Auckland match. Sure it was Friday afternoon, but you
just have to question whether or not this competition with
those numbers playing in Maine stadiums Okay, Pirua Stadium or

(06:32):
Parua Park where at the Wellington took the match. You
might see more of that into the future as well.
We'll just have to wait and see what all pans
out in this format. In this competition.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, you and I have talked to link on my
Saturday morning show where you're on every week, and you know,
from the target point of view, you know, you've got Wanaky,
You've got Alexander, you've got Queenstown. We talk about this.
You know, the NPC is about community and engaging your community,
and you know, sometimes these we just got to maybe
the ego has got to be dropped in these big
stadium just don't suit the purpose at the moment, you know,

(07:02):
and we've got to realize where it is. But I
know people you know in the Leeds a good example.
You've invested a lot of money. You've got to be
able to use these things.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Yeah, you do. But also I wonder whether or not
we've got to go back in time. And I don't
like sounding like I'm sort of dusting off the dust
here and going back to the old times, but wondering
whether you do have your Match of the day and
you line up a couple of windows only for MPC
at the weekend, and you play some games concurrently, and
not all of them will receive full television broadcast rights,

(07:30):
and that will probably allow the games to be taken
to some of the smaller venues where you don't have
to have the same outside broadcast facilities to be able
to cater for it, and that might bring back your community.
We take it to areas which haven't seen those games
in the past, and that might be a formula that
might be adopted. And he used to come, who knows, well,
wait and see.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Wait and see. You go out and do your race walking,
do your practice.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, look good, good on your craig. I knew that
the some unemployed comedians around New Zealand, and you probably
just joined them.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
And they all say say you should never have private
jokes on here. But I'll let the listeners know what
we mean. I've got to get to an air break.
Appreciate your time, Paul. We have a great date you
toos they warm Just a wee disclaimer you Paul not
a big fan of race walking, not because of racewalking,
but because it's illegal. Everyone's running, And he sent me
some angry texts when it was going on in the Olympics.
So and then Paul actually had a story where he

(08:19):
actually did it himself and actually ran. He actually did
running as part of the race walking. So that's a
bit of the Peck story
