Speaker 1 (00:00):
Emma Newborn and Amelia Dunbar are a comedy duo with
a point to prove. They've been touring wall shots and
dog comedy for decades and determined to prove naves say
is wrong. After being turned down for film funding due
to perceive lack of audience, Emma and Amlia are gracing
stages across New Zealand with your new live show The
Bitches Box. Had to get a bit of funding behind

(00:20):
them for the film they're trying to complete, which will
appear to Farmers, Grows, dog lovers, Kiwis and anyone who
appreciates offbeat back, crazy and terrifically bonkers comedy. And I'm
joined by Emma and Amelia. Now, good morning, ladies. How
are you going?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Good morning, Well.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Entertainment, I just I've just got some notes here. You're
in Hamilton over the weekend, I suppose. First, well, how's
the show going?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Oh so good. We had such a lovelier We had
such a lovely evening on Saturday in Hamilton, checking off
the tour. Yeah, it's just so fun. This is the
first time we're sort of bringing this new show to
IRV audiences, slightly more urban audiences, so it's interesting to
see the response. It's been awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Tell us a wee bit about how Butcher's Boxes came about.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
It was actually a chance meeting over a decade ago
between Emma and me when we were in Auckland. We
were sort of thrown together at this artist collective for
strangers and we had to come up with a ten
minute piece of entertainment and we did a sketch on
to Butcher's Locks up in the Butcher's Box and then

(01:31):
it kind of grew from there and we've done This
is actually our fourth show. This is yeah, the Butcher's
Box Episode four, and yeah, who knew that there was
such a life in dog comedy?

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Absolutely tell us a little bit about the funding or
the turning down of the funding and what the rationale was.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, so.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, the feedback that we got that there was a
perceived lack of audience. So a little bit of history
on the film is that we've shot half of it,
so we got sixty percent of it in the can
and it's set on a farm and it tells the
story about these two Jack Russell dogs who get taken
to Ashburton to get their balls chopped off. So we

(02:16):
shot half of it because we realized that people weren't
really getting the fact that we were playing dogs and
what that would look like on screen. And then we
went and asked for some money to finish the film
and were turned down because they didn't think that there
would be an audience for that kind of story or
that kind of film, which was a little bit hard
to take, especially because at the time we were in

(02:39):
the middle of a cyclone release tour, touring around Northland
and Platafati and the Wide Rapper, and we were like
just selling out night after night after night. So we
were like, well, we know that's not true. We know
that there is an audience for this film that just
might not look like your usual kind of audience.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Is there a case a media where you know, I
suppose you know, naivete is probably I won't use the
word I was going to say, but you know you're
obviously being well received this a chat. It's also about
promotion and actually trying to prove them wrong. I mean,
I know you're trying to generate revenue, but it's showing
that actually know this these things and this sort of
comedy does sell absolutely.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
I mean, we wouldn't be doing this if we hadn't
had the support, you know, for for a decade. Yeah,
you know, it's just the nature of touring lives theory.
You need people, and so we know that. I mean,
what we really want to do with this film is
get to more people. I mean, we've got this incredibly
loyal and wonderful rural base, but we know that this

(03:41):
comedy translates not just to the farmers and growers. It's
it's you know, it's dog glovers, as we said, you
said in your opening, it's it's it's Kiwi's, it's people
who like offbeat comedy. It's Yeah, we just think it's
it's something that New Zealand and hopefully the world is
really going to enjoy. I mean, we've had some really
fantastic feedback from outside New Zealand already, so we just

(04:04):
we're desperate to get it done because it's something we
haven't seen for a long time, that sort of rural
I think we will kind of hang our hat on
the you know, the likes of s q Is, the
likes of fred Dack and Flats and that sort of thing,
and we just haven't seen that kind of irreverent, rural
based comedy for a long time and we're ready to
bring it back. But via the dogs.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Yeah, have we lost again? It's a question. I mean,
we all like to laugh, and we all need to laugh,
don't we. And we're in a world now where I
think we've become so PC that we we're afraid to
sometimes laugh at things. But have we sort of you know,
we've got to remember that actually we're trying to have entertainment.
It's good for our soul to be able to laugh
and have a joke in how to watch and enjoy

(04:48):
things that are slightly different.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, And I think this gives us Sorry,
I was just gonna say, I think I'm using the
vehicle of the dogs allows to avoid the delicacies of
you know, as you say, the PC sort of thing.
You know, dogs don't have a filter. Dogs follow impulses
and urges, and so we can get away with a

(05:10):
bit more. Although sort of as a reflection of the
people who are in then I.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Suppose absolutely, I've got to keep moving. But Emma, and
I mean, I wish you all the best on this
tour and I hope everything goes well. I hope you're
a great reception and thank you very much for joining
me this morning.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Lovely thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
There we go. Yep, so the Bitches boxes are in
our town tomorrow, Hastings on Saturday, and christ on Sunday.
I'll get more details so you can find out how
to get along and where their tour is going to
the
