Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, let's talk Heartland rugby and joining us from Rugby
Heartland dot co dot n z as Kevin here, Good morning, Kevin.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
How are you? Good morning? Yes, the world is a
wonderful place when Heartland begins, I.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Said, yesterday morning, I came in, I did the show, Kevin,
and I bought up the Heartland games and then I
couldn't believe how close they all were. It looked like
an astounding, outstanding first round and obviously the first one
that stands out. And I'm from Tamuru. But South Canterbury
taking on there. I suppose their rivals, they're sort of
Nemesis and fung But South Canabury continued that amazing winning streak.
(00:34):
Is it what it now? Thirty two games in the
Heartland Championship.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
One thousand I think now I've lost count. But yeah,
it was a battle of the Titans. Yes, South Canterbury
back to back to back champions and it was always
going to be a tough ask, but they went along
with a very settled squad. They had two debutes, one
(00:59):
young Chap at the age of nineteen and then some
new guy coming through the ranks called hooker Elliott at
the age of sty eight making his debut for South Canterbury.
I've heard he's pretty good, so yeah, outcoming record books
to find if that's the biggest gap between two players
(01:19):
making the debut. But yeah, no, Hiccer Elliott calls South
Canterbury home now, and yeah he pulled on the Green
and Blacks and came on with about ten to go.
So no, a huge game. And of course it was
an eighty second eighty third minute penalty that stole it.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Wangani.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
He looked like they were in control, but no, they
just faltered it at last. But in South Canterbury they
just know how to dig themselves out of the grave.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, I think it was. He's playing
up in McKenzie and he up in the Philly region.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
He's playing for mckensey Club. Yeah, he married the last
from al Albany apparently, and now he calls that home
and he's been running around the sheep pad up there
or down there in McKenzie country.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Absolutely, Also the Battle of the Red and Whites and
some way with West Coast thirty eight Pobby Bay twenty nine,
West Coast. I mean they had a good year last year,
didn't they?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
They did, And I mean, I did drop a couple
of games, but I did pick this one myself and
it was a great occasion. A penalty try pretty much
gave it to West Coast once all the stats came out.
There was about the only game we didn't see life
coverage of. But no, they got up the West Coast
(02:34):
a back in their traditional red and white hood. Yes,
awesome to see a great, great occasion there, And of
course it was also Jesse mccraye's fiftieth game for West Coast,
but more importantly it was the one and only Troy
Tafe's one hundredth game for West Coast, one hundred and
seventh first class game all up. But he only becomes
the second West Coast centurion now behind Malardy Murdo on
(02:56):
one hundred and one games. So a couple more games
and he'll be the most cat West Coaster. So congratulations
to Troy and has fan. But big win. They had
about eight new caps in the team, a lot of
retirements from that championship side from last year. But moving forward, Yeah,
it'll be interesting to see how the new team joel together.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
He's a question for you, how many all Blecks have
come out of the West Coast.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
You know eight?
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Oh? Is it is that many?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah? I can't remember all their names. But there was
Jack Steele. Oh yeah, there was eight.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
I thought there was one or two and I know
one of them because he's my great uncle west Bill Mum.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Well he was actually out of.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Bully, Yeah, the Buller sort of things. Yeah, yeah, right, Actually,
I'll be shot by. I thought he played for the
West Coast as well. But I'll get I'll get corrected.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Don't worry.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
Don't want to keep well in West Coast the same.
Let's keep going. I'll take myself out of the hole.
Mc kennerby. You never know what you to get out
of mc kenny. I have to think it depended on
some of the imports that come down from christ Gitch.
But they got a good win thirty twenty seven over
king Country.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
They certainly did, and they to me they are a
dark horses here. They're looking solid. They've been very quiet
and sitting in the background for the last couple of
years and then they just get away with everything. I've
got MD Canbury for my top four this year, and
I did pick them to get up over king Country,
but King Country event pained really well and they had
(04:27):
a great pre season, went over Ten Valley, which was
no mean feat at a super rugby game curtain raiser,
and yeah they got up really well. But then King
Country dropped a few preseason games. I'm thinking, oh, this
is going to be a bit tough, but they held
their own and even though they went down by three points,
(04:48):
King Country still got a couple of bonus points out
of that game. So that's a big fillip to them
because you know, bonus points are going to count this
year and they but they got the five tries and
South mccanfrey had to sort of do it with the
boot to get home thirty points to twenty seven. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Absolutely again often the Heartland rugby will say is on
from the dead. Is the strength of us in the
South Elde on North Otago. But fortunately for the Armor
A team they went down to Horrorford A Company sixteen
points to fourteen A close one.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah, it was an nasty game to watch, but yeah,
no North Otago. I actually had Horrifanua. Maybe I don't
know it's clumb from the Wellington region, but I had
Harrafaneua to win this. I was quite shocked to see
the odds there Harrafaneua paying like four point fifteen head
to head and North Otago were paying a dollar fourteen.
So my thoughts were, get on harrofaneuver with the a
(05:43):
Maltese and yeah, and they didn't, you know, they didn't
put what's the word million four disappoint but they did
have to wait again another injury time penalty to get
up sixteen fourteen. The halftime score there fourteen to ten.
So it shows how a bit of a dalla match
it was at the number two ground in Omaru, because
(06:05):
I've chopped down the old grand stand there at Omaru,
and a partner in crime of yours, mister Smith, was
very upset when he heard they pulled down the grand
stand at Omaru.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
You're right about William John Mumm. He played for Buller.
So I'll get kicked out of the family and round
it out. Wirifor Bush took on TAM's Valley Teams Valley
two good thirty seven.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah, Now this was a close game and the score
blew out in the last five minutes. Wirepple were actually
up twenty four to thirteen going into the last five
ten minutes and then they just ran out of the steam.
Just at the last moment to go down to Tams.
So teams are still flying high. Of course you've missed
the big game of the whole weekend, haven't you worried? Well,
(06:51):
a little team called Buller traveled up to Ruetoria, took
a game which everyone thought, Oh, this going to be
tough for the Buller boys, and they walk away with
their runner only Bill Osborne to honor. It was about
three or four minutes to go, they were leading ten eight,
(07:13):
and then with a minute to go, Nuddy PLO's Coast
got a penalty right in front eleven ten and I thought, oh,
they're going to lose it because they got beaten in
Golden Point last year. Buller twenty three twenty by East
Coast down at Westport. Well, they returned to favors, didn't
they. They went about a thousand phases and got a penalty
about twenty five thirty meters out right in front, and
(07:35):
Andrew Wells slotted it to bring home the Bill Osborne
to honor. After a year and a half living in
Uncle Bill living in Rhertoria, He's on his way to Westport.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
I can't done that. I'm going to be kicked out
of my family, both sides, because.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
I know well the both sides of my.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Family are from Buller. But I am correct that bill
mum did play for West Coast Buller five matches. So
that's where I got up. But to say that I've lived,
I thought they must have had the buy or they
didn't play for some reason. Put it down. But because
actually win South Canbury play against Buller, Kevin, they play
for the Strawn Shield or Memorial Shield, and that's my granddad.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Oh that's very interesting because this week if King Country
full of Defender shield at the shield the bill osbond Tonga,
their next defense will be against a team called the
West Coast on the original marked and my calendar on
the seventh of September in Victoria Square in Westport. And
(08:39):
not only would it be for the bill Osborne, it
will also be for the Rundell Cup. And at the moment,
after twenty thousand games's there's only West Coast are ahead
by one game and the point offerential point zero one.
In one hundred and twenty years of playing rugby against
each other.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
I got to keep moving. Thanks very much for time, Kevin.
Thanks for your expertise in the heartlet Championship. We'll better
get to a break fourteen minutes to nine,
