Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well it is time to talk motorsport now, and of
course the Italian Grand Prix and a blast from the
past from me from another time, another place, Eric Thompson, Good.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Morning, Eric, How are you right? God?

Speaker 1 (00:14):
This is like hopping back on the bike chatting to you. Yeah, fantastic.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I was really tough and the Louis said that you're on.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Yeah, yeah, no, good to chat. We've always had. I
love the motorsport, love your knowledge. Let's look at this gee,
the rise of Rise and rise of McLaren of Lake.
Can he give us sort of a bit of insight
as to how that and why that's happening.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
I think a light has to do with Zach Brown,
the new CEO, who's very much hands on. I mean,
he comes from a bit of a motorsport background. He's
used to race, so he has a bit of an
understanding there. But he just took McClaren and came in
and just really shook everything up. He also has a
marketing and management background and he's just himself and everything

(01:02):
at it. And there was the saga when they got
Oscar Pastri to join Lando Norris and how Richiardo wasn't
performing two or three years ago, so they sort of
paid him out, got two real young guns and you know,
everything's working out now, But at the time it was
a bit of a punt amish roll of the dice.
Two young fellas. You know, normally they have an experienced

(01:23):
old dog in there, a bit of a veteran and
a young guy. But Jack Brown said, no, these guys
are brilliant. Will both put them together. And they've constantly
updated the car, constantly pushed the envelope and they've just
got it right. And now you know, those two drivers
are working quite well together. There's a little bit of
tension there between the two of them, especially after Lando

(01:45):
was told to pull over and let past part. But
then again, I think what was really how the long
term vision of Zack Brown and his team and the
engineers as they said to Lando that if you want
to win a world title, you need a teammate to
support you, and I think he said they were very,
very poignant, and that's what's happening now and they are

(02:08):
so resurgent, and but look too, Ferrari. This weekend they've
got lots of upgrades for their home Grand Prix. That's
always going to be fun.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
So when you say, upgrades for Ferrari. Just give us
a brief sort of synopsis of what that might look like.
What might they do.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Oh, they're just bringing something, you know, improved the arrow package,
maybe a little bit of geometry changes. You know, there's
nothing major, but just during the season. They sometimes come out,
especially to people. Mind you, Red Bull, we're backwards at
the Dutch Grand Prix with you know, their tweets, the
staffings car. But no, they're just you know, just to
try and get a bit more speed out of it.

(02:44):
There might be a few software tweaks, you know, the
engine management system tweaks, and just to try and get
that little bit of extra speed. For Monzo, which is
a really high speed track, Monsor you're going to have
to have a big set of then you know what
there to hold a flat around there. But you know,
so that'll be that, that'll look good.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, Okay, so we can expect a bit more from Ferrari.
Obviously McLaren really has sorted themselves out. What about max
for staff and Red Bull? I mean, is seventy point
McLaren behind by seventy points? Is I mean, is that
likely that they might bowl to close that gap?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Well, you know mathematically, you know that phrase, everybody rolls
out in every sport. Mathematically, of course it's possible, but
the staff would would have to have two DNF as
a nil.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Plus yes, no points, and Norris to probably win six
out of the eight races left to go for him
to win the title, because seventy points is a big,
big gap.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
And you know, if the staff would just tootles around
and finishes fourth and fifth in every single race from
now on, he'll win the title. But to me, hamis
the most interesting thing is the Constructors Championship. Yes, now
all the teams go if our driver wins the championship.
I love that, another big bat shiny trophy for the cabinet.

(04:03):
But for them, they don't get any money out of that.
It's the Constructors Championship where they get tens upon tens
of millions of dollars in prize money. And now that
gap at one stage was seventy odd points, it's now
down to thirty points eight rounds ago, and it is
absolutely possible. The way McLaren are going is their usurp

(04:27):
red bull in the Constructors Championship because Perez.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Is not performing.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
No, no, it's just dropped right away, hasn't he?

Speaker 2 (04:36):
He absolutely has that service stappened out on his own.
He's not going to pick up enough points for the
Constructor's Championship unless Perez plays his wingman. And that's where
McClaren are so good, is that Norris and Piastre are
fighting in the top three. You know that either ones
either winning, the others finishing second or third or vice versa.

(04:56):
So that way McCown are just eating up the Constructor's points.
So I think there'll be a bit of tension in
the Red Book camp, and I reckon they're going to
try and chuck the kitchen sink and the water and
the worktop surface and the fridge this weekend.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Looking forward to it, Eric, I got a lot just
before you go. I love that when you said about
the mathematically because the one that always used to get
me is at one of our quite a few Rugby
league fans back in the old TV three days and
they'd say to me, and I'd read the script and
it would say it's a Musk win game for the Warriors,
and I'd read it about eight weeks in a row.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
I was sort of alluding to that.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yes, yeah, mathematical change exactly. Great stuff. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
One more thing if I made yes, fans of the
sport and your listeners to watch out for is two
is the new driver Calipino for Williams. They've ken Logan sergeant,
so there's a new guy coming in never racing the
formul one race again, sort of doing okay and F
two he's going to get a baptist the fire, so
I think that will be interesting to watch.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Keevin one. That's Calipino, isn't it that? So it is
is coming for william Ye yes.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Young Argentina Argentinian that Williams has signed up to the
place sergeant for the rest of the season.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Great stuff, Thank you very much. That is Eric Thompson.
He man, if there's anything that's not known about minorsport,
he will find it out. Great to have Eric here
