Cooking Bunnings a warehouse ENDPC now on the Country Sport,
Breakfast on Gold Sport. We've got some midwek footy to
look forward to tonight, whyktow and Northland finishing up round
four sixth versus eleven on the table of course. A
live commentary here on Gold Sport from seven o'clock tonight,
joining us out of the Northland TANAFA head coach Dale
McCard Morningdale, morning mate, you very well, thank you storm week.

(00:32):
I guess it's always a difficult week for teams like Northland.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, very tishirit EPs and we'll be running a few
given a few boys an opportunity that haven't had an
opportunity this season, so look that you've got to You're
only as good as the depth of your squad. So yeah,
you're going to see a few new names out there
and they're a pretty excited group, so looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
You've got your hands for because you've actually sort of
doing something a little different this year with your with
your players, aren't you.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Yes, we're running like two different fifteen So the boys
that played against Southland. Just about none of that starting
fifteen are involved and they've had the whole so we
got a nine day turnaround for that team. So they've
had a couple of days off and then come in
yesterday and trained to banks this team and then they've
got an install tomorrow for counties and we had captains

(01:21):
run today for the other fifteen and yeah, so it's
a bit different. It's something that I learned when I
was at my one in Pacifica and year one we
had three storm backs and over six weeks we did
exactly the same thing that worked out really well.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Well, let's hope it does for you tonight. So before
we talk about tonight's game, that's I know, we should
address last weekend's game against Southland. Up twenty six to
seven at the break, but going down thirty one twenty
six to Southland. I mean, what happened there?

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Oh look mate, we sat and watch the review and
credit to Southland. They come back. Everything in the first
half we touched turned of goals. Yeah, all our plays
we've been through, all our line out strikes, all our maps,
all our special pays and everything we touched worked. Then
we go out in the second half and we created
some really good opportunities but didn't take them. And then

(02:11):
on the other side of the coins is that a
couple of the kicked south and put them behind us.
It was like the ball was remote controlled. It found
perfectly for the situation at the time. And credit to
them they took their opportunities. And we've reviewed it and
we had four really good opportunities at any stage in
that game. If we'd taken one of those, that would

(02:32):
have changed the momentum. Wee bit. We missed a penalty
out in front, we missed a try scoring opportunity and
went through, and we had a three on one, lost
the ball trying to offload too early. And so those
little things are the good thing about this compt. As
we discussed as a group, the seven other coaching groups
are pretty disappointed with the weekend when you look at

(02:52):
a few of the other results and a few of
the other teams are expected to win or lose or
so look at the good thing is mate, it's a
great content. You're not on, you'll get partnersed. And we
went on and we didn't do well enough in that
second half. And as I said, at the South and
they were never going to lie down like they did
against Taranaki. Started slow, come back really strong. So you'a
we got to take that one on the channel and

(03:14):
move on almost mate. Yeah, we can't dwell on it.
We've got to get on with it.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Absolutely, is their talent up there in the North, I
mean the sides of the two sides that you're running
as their penny coming through from club ranks up north
for you.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Oh look, there's a lot of good young talent, but
we've probably haven't really done a good job of growing
the talent around the mental skills, you know, being how
would you put learning to be a professional. And we've
got some really talented young men. So tomorrow you're going
to see some eighteen and nineteen year olds that are
very talented, but they are along. They need to do

(03:50):
a lot of work around the technical and tactical aspects.
And my part of me coming and was I'm going
to grow and nurture some of these young lads because
they're going to be at talent in years to come.
They're going to be fifty to sixty kappas and they're
going to be pretty special. They just need to be
given an opportunity, and I'm probably about a year eighteen
months too earlier with them, but like, I'd rather develop

(04:12):
them and give them an opportunity then go to someone
I'm probably who's not going to be around for long.
And you know that's just a balancing act. You know,
you win some, you lose some. But look, I believe
that in the long term, given these young Northern players
an opportunity, it's going to pay offerus. So I'll be

(04:32):
proven right or wrong, but I'll go with my plan.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
FMG Stadium against the Mulu tonight with the cow bells ringing.
So what are the Mulus do well that you'll have
to look out for?

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Look, mate, they play a pretty simple game. Big strong
forwards get over a game line, game line, they don't
get too stress. They just carry move the ball carrier.
And then they've got a back three and outside backs
that can just rip you the bits from anywhere. So
look they play. When I say a simple game, it's
just very direct, big powerful forwards get over the game line.

(05:04):
And then the guys like Marby and their wingers and
that they just any sniff of any opportunities will they
get in behind you. They just play really fast and
really quick and they get excited. So look they're a
very good side. We're under no illusions. But you know,
on your day, if we're on a game, we'll be
We'll give them a good challenge.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
For you personally. Day a bit of a full circle
moment and you're coaching career. Back twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen,
you were an assistant for the telepan. Now you're leading
the side. So how special is it for you to
be back leading the province.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Oh, it was always an area that Kelly and I
loved living in back then. So we obviously from christ
Church and then come up to Northland and then we
left and then were sort of I sort of got
to the stage where it was, you know, I'd done
Tonga and I'd done mine at Pacivica, and after the
World Cup it was like, well what are we going
to do and it was sort of well, probably the

(05:56):
only option for we go back to Canterbury or we'd
go to Northland. And then the opportunity to come to
go to Northland. So we are pretty happy about that.
It's a beautiful plus to love them. Yeah, So we're
enjoying the nice warm weather and it's pretty.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Good and pretty seafood up there too, mate.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Oh mate, yeah, I can see the boat ramp from
the house and I love my fishing so as far
as lifestyle goes, and I've got a golf course out
the other side of the house, so pretty pretty cool lifestyle.
And yeah, we just really enjoyed life at the moment.
So that's good.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Fantastic day living the dream. Good luck for tonight against
Whitadaw and thanks for joining us.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Good man, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Thank you, Dale McLeod, the head coach for Northland. That
game kicks off five past seven tonight live Comradgeary here
