It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport,
your home of live commentary.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're talking about international football this morning. We caught up
with Sam Darry with the All Blacks, but it's not
just international rugby. Round five of Bunning's MPC gets underway tonight.
Bay Plenty Steamers host the one or two Turbos out
of Rotoro International Stadium five past seven kickoff. We'll have
a commentary here on gold Sport. Joining us on the
show this morning, Turbo's head coach Mike Rogers. Morning, Mike, Yeah,
(00:33):
very well, thank you. Right, let's talk about the turbos.
Not from four to start the season. But the scores
really haven't gone your guys done you guys any justice
have they? I mean you've been in with a chance
in most of those games.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, I think mother says one game we're a really
poor fishing too tough, but well Richard gained significantly over
the last three and we've been a hit for long
periods of the last two games against Wellington and Hawks
Bay who are a couple of the top teams, but
may just really feel for the players, because they're putting
it all out there and we're just not quite getting
it over the line, but really proud of our growth.
(01:10):
At the same time, it's.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
A tough old season really when you think about it,
I mean, you've got to fit ten games into nine weeks.
So how are the boys feeling? I mean, are you
dealing with injuries?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
We're a bit over the last until three weeks. I
think we've got twelve or thirteen guys out at the moment.
It certainly doesn't help, but it's part of the course
with this competition. That's why they have an extended squad
intended some wider training group guys and stuff like that.
So I think when we consider it from probably the
purpose of the competition is development. We're just getting an
(01:43):
opportunity to develop a few more guys this year.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
You're up against the Bay in Rota Ua tonight. What
will you need to do to stop the steamer's side,
you know, beating you.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
I made that really good team, started off the season
with a custener all with three wins, and I've come
up short with lust couple. But I don't outstanding back
line of the guys looking running the day Occaud of
Trastley Orcada exceptionally good players, so I think we wish
to really take them right out front, and if we
can get a little bit of a sendence there, I
think we'll keep ourselves in the game. But it's certainly
(02:18):
the certainly a challenge for tonight and.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Mike, it's a full circle moment for you in a
way because you're a former assistant coach for the Steamers
under Clayton Clayton McMillan back in twenty nineteen. I guess
that that adds a little bit of more interest in
the match for you, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, and I coached the majority of the players that
are and the Steamers either in the end of nineteen
tmps baton with the Steamers and the players that I
have a huge amount of admiration for and really enjoy
my catre with them. I'm so that it'll be cool
to about to catch up with them and Yeah, suddenly, yeah,
I guess that's it's cool. We go full circle and
(02:54):
the probably wouldn't be much better than packing one up
on a couple of guys that actually coached to Lapytunga
and John Dodd, who are now coaching the team.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
But we'll see how we get on and travel wise,
do you guys come up by bus from Palmers to
North Audio fly up?
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Another team traveled up yesterday, so we're rived done or
through about four o'clock yesterday afternoon, have the night together,
lucky day. It's always a bit of a slog waiting
around for a seven o'clock kickoff, but that's certainly much
better than traveling up in the bus on the day
of the game, so we're fortunate for it. And then
we back home straight after the game, so be a
(03:32):
bit of a.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Late one in the start of rugby in the Mono
two region. Mike, do you have the cattle coming through
the clubs in high school ranks or do you have
to nab a few players from around the country.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Really good question. So we're really fortunate in that Fielding
High school and Pammy Boys are to schools in the country.
So the Fielding actually beat Pame to make it through
to the top four which kicks off today and parmis
the more and we've got players coming through that or
is certainly a bit of a gap probably about our
five year period where there wasn't a whole lot of
(04:05):
development going on. And because of that, we've had a
couple of players from outside, but we've got some of
the Beshan Kevin in the country and Manota with four
both on his own twenties this year four last year.
We'll have a couple of the news old secondary schools
this year. So the future is bright and it's just
a matter of staying the course in terms of trying
to develop a local team through our high schools and
(04:26):
academy program and we're starting to be the fruit of
that now. But yeah, tefinitely playing a long game.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
What do you think about it. The legendary Sam Whitelocke
came out of that region, so enough there's a few
Will Sam white Luck's out there to be great.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
A yeah, absolutely, and there's been plenty others who have
unfortunately left the region able to chase again screen of pastures.
And I see our rollers really around giving those players
a bible alternative to stay in the region. And the
two boats need to start winning effectively, because you know,
winning teams get players and to see for every teams
and ultimately that's what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Good of you to join us this morning, go well tonight,
said wrote to international stadium.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Thanks so much, she's a really appreciate interest.
Speaker 1 (05:07):

of that match kickoff five past seven tonight with Malcolm
Jordan with the call here on gold Sport
