Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's gun boots or rugby boots, the Country Sport
Breakfast has you covered on gold Sport your home of
live commentary.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
It was a busy old weekend for rugby right across
the weekend we had lots of commentary on gold Sport.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
We had it all.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
We had the All Blacks NPC and of course new
holder of the Ranfury Shield as well, so joining us
former All Black and one of the busiest voices in
rugby at the moment and straw.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Morning and how are you? You were everywhere mate on
the weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, isn't it wonderful? Probably some of the special parts
of the year for me to be able to sort
of travel around and watch some of these games. Just
an awesome competition. The NPC, we always talk about it
being the soul of New Zealand rugby and certainly Brasini
the end of the moment, isn't it Crater Wats.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Yeah, and some great games, but we'll talk about those shortly.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Let's go back to the big one for us on
the weekend, the All Black South Africa. Almost the exact
same thing as last week, the All Blacks fading in
the last twenty What do you put that down undo.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
It was literally I mean it was almost a rinse
and repeat, wasn't it until what we saw the things
that we sort of applauded last week around sort of
being way more competitive. We got up in the South
Abrion's face. We won a lot of the collisions we
could test in that line out of time. Our scrum was good,
and you know, for large moments of the game, you
know we actually had control ability. We didn't score a try,

(01:24):
but we certainly put on enough pressure to sort of
to get those penalties. But then you know, just at
that back end, you know, for some reason that's sort
of twelve to fifteen minutes, we really struggle to sort
of take control of the game in terms of its management.
And I mean you normally put that down to your
game drivers, but you know, the South African team just
have an uncanny knack of if they're close enough, they

(01:48):
know they're going to get across the top for a
number of different reasons, and of course it happened again.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
When we look at the South Africans number one, we've
got to take into account. We they are the world champions,
they have a very very good side, they're very strong,
aren't they? Whereas we're we're blooding in some new players.
So it's sort of a transition time for the Abs,
isn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, this isn't it. And I mean a lot of
the discussions we've heard over the last few days it's about,
you know, let's be patient, you know, it afford some
time to this particular group. The thing for mine is,
you know, as you are blooding new players and building
your squad, I would really like to see soon. And
I know there's a few injuries there a team that's

(02:31):
kind of there's our starting fifteen, there's our test fifteen,
and build the rest around. And I'm not really seeing
that right now. So you'd like to think in this.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
It's a I guess in a way it's a building time.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Do you think for the All Blacks bringing in young
players like Wallas the Titi who I think played very
very well.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
I think they scored him pretty highly, didn't they.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
I mean he's a powerful player, isn't he. He's done that,
you know the last two years he's played, been very
physical and he is one of those young players you
you speak about. You know, then it's good enough to
be in a starting group, but also he's he's powerful
off the bench.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Is it time to sound the alarm with Scott Robinson
or again is he pacing himself as well? She would
just take a deep breath. I mean, you know, I
feel that the days of where the all blacks were
dominant is kind of over. A lot of teams have
now sort of come up to our level.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Do you think that.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, that's a shame, isn't it. And you know we
kind of sit back and think, yeah, that's that's hard
to take. But look, let's be realistic and you know,
at this give this group a little bit more time.
You know, we'd have to start seeing some real positive
signs and obviously converting more of these Test matches and
winning more of them. But yeah, I think it's just
a little bit of sit back for a bit longer

(03:45):
and hope things turn around.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah. Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
I want to touch on the Wallabies as well. Could
you believe that result on Sunday morning? I mean they
were up twenty three early in the match and going
down to Argentina sixty seven twenty seven, So what the
hell happened?

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Oh? The transformation from their lead to getting belted by you.
I think they gave up sixty four points to this
Argentiny team. I mean, it's unheard of from Australians. I mean,
I know Joe well, he's a very good coach. I mean,
it's just something that you don't normally see. Really disappointing
for Australian fans. I think about all of us because

(04:22):
you know, we all have a vested interest with our
brothers across the tentment. But that was horrible in the end,
and the Premiers really did play well in front of
their home fans.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
And of course next up it's the All Blacks and
Australia in a couple of weeks from now in Wellington.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Well yeah, a couple of wounded soldiers playing each other
at the back end of a competition, isn't it. So
you know, a lot to play for, which is great.
And of course we always have a lot of spice
when we play against the Australians as well. So I'm
really looking forward to those two tests because I think
both teams will you have the astrategies around how to
beat each other, so it should be a good contest.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
And I think the other interesting one is going to
be South Africa meeting Argentina, because Argentina have been the
dark horses in this competition.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Haven't they.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, they are one of those teams over the last
three or four years that are extremely physical and can
match every team that they play against. It's just they
tend to come a little bit unrebel but unstuck in
games where they just try and force the pace a
little bit that Latin no way. They play pretty free,
you know. So the South Africans will test them, but yeah,
they can match them in so many facets of the game,

(05:28):
so there'll be another intriguing contest.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
I'm picking that the Argentinians will beat South Africa and
one of those test matches.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Mate, Well, I mean you're probably not alone there, and
you know, maybe you get a rock onto the tab
if I guess you've got. But that cares for Christmas?

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Hey, let's talk in PC because you were involved with
commentary on a lot of those games, and we'll start
with that Shield game in Napier final, second final, second
penalty got Tasman over the line.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
How good was that?

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yeah? Was a freakish game. Was it a wonderful atmosphere
in the train park? The weather was beautiful, the track
was suburb. Tatherman dominated that first half. They really came
out clinical away they played it was it was impressive.
And then of course it's a Salt Bay team. They
just had a mental fortitude to get back in games.
They haven't started well all season, but they got back
into the game in a second half. And of course

(06:20):
the try by Protheroe and then a freakis conversion by
Danny Tala from corner. You know, I mean he's not
even the regular goalkicker and he kicked took two sideline conversions,
so there's another piece to the game. And then of
course as they were trying to close down the game,
that man again, Tava Tava Nawai. You know, he's he
is an absolute freak. He just got over the ball

(06:43):
and it was really interesting. K I was in the
commentary and all I looked at when the penalty was
given was I looked at Patata and he just pointed
to the post. The young man. He just said, I'll
take the post, give me the ball, I'll take the kick,
and he nails it from fifty. Unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Damien McKenzie couldn't do that on the weekend, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yeah, we left a few points out. They didn't eats
probably did too, but you know that doesn't help when
you're trying to win these games against South Africa.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
No absolutely.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
And the other game that went down to the wire,
and you would have been fascinated with that one. Auckland
snapping the losing streak of the season getting ahead of
North Harbor.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
The Battle of the Bridge.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Yeah, it was another intriguing contest. I think it's seventy
points and a battle of the Bridge. They always have
a lane of spice down there, those two teams, and
of course what chance fight at the Becky And I
know Brnall will be pretty disappointed with all that played out,
but so one. Yeah, some wonderful tries and there was
another great day of footy and a good advertisement for

(07:43):
a checking rugby against two you know old foes.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Yeah, there was some good stuff on the weekend.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yesterday you were on the call for the Taranaki Waycato
match and again a try in the last moment.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
But I thought the ball was forward. Was it a
forward pass?

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Yeah? I think big Mark Kelly sorry, the producer was
saying the same thing. It was interesting. It sort of
looked like it was okay initially, but then when they
slowed down a couple of times, it looked like it
did come forward out of their hand. But wasn't it
amazing that Podrov he's come back to join the group.
He's one of the older statesmen of that Tanhaky team.
You know, hit the peace of mind to just sort
of shift into a bit of space and then that

(08:20):
razzle dazzle down that sideline. That Kadanhaky team, you know
they're going to be tough to beat. You know, they've
they've also got the ability to strike and score late.
You know. Another great game though too in the excellent
conditions where the condition five.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Rounds into the MPC. Who are you picking to win
it all? Because it's it's pretty tight.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
They're really Wellington unbeaten at the top.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Yeah, I mean it's the two undefeated teams. You know,
looked good for my I thought Tasman actually had a
good chance of getting the shield and they obviously proved that.
But also Wellington they've had a good team and a
good program building for the last two or three years.
And of course they've got an excellent roster there, the
wonderful young players, but also some real steal with some
of the old elder statements, so that those two teams

(09:04):
are probably still But but you know, the great thing
a be able to simply see is you know, white
cattle could get up by a plenty of played some
good rugby as well, or they are still in the mix.
I mean Auckland if they make the eight. You wouldn't
want to play the one the eight, would you if
that's that built to meet him? So, uh, you know,
lots of teams still in the match and that's what
we love.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Yeah, absolutely high end. So let you recover from the weekend.
Good calls and thanks for joining.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
