Edit's a specialist beer magazine called The Pursuit of Happiness.
Michael Donaldson joins us morning.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Michael, Okay, Brian, how are we doing very well?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Thank you. We're heading to Ranfurly Shield Territory today and
that is Sonny Nelson and talking about a brewery there.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah, like amazing that Tasman had to Ranfurly Shield. I
remember living in Marlborough in the seventies when they won
it and that was a big deal back then.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Well it still is a big deal. In fact, it's
the first time Tasman have ever won it. But it
might be a tough ask defending it. They've got Wellington
on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yes, yes, well you got to love it while you've
got it.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
The region around Nelson they quite famous for producing some
fine vas, aren't they.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah they are. Well, you know, like it's the hot
growing capital of New Zealand, so I think you know
this that element comes into it. But it's it's always
been an historic kind of home for brewing. And for
a while they had the tagline the craft Brewing Capital
of New Zealand, and they had a little bit of
a head to hit with Wellington, who call themselves the

(01:44):
craft beer Capital. Slightly different terminology because at the time
Nelson had a lot of brewery but they had a population.
They did have a large number. I think they've been
sort of overtaken by the Central Okago region these particularly
one a brewery per population, but it's still it's the

(02:06):
heart of beer in New Zealand, I think Nelson. So yeah.
And the brewery I wanted to talk about is called
Eddie Line. And for anyone who I guess kayaks or
goes on the water, they'll know what an Eddie Line
looks like, that sort of swirl of water. But they've

(02:27):
got a really interesting background because for a while in
the world, there existed two Eddie Line breweries, one in
Colorado in America and one in Nelson, and they were
owned by the same people. And there's a couple called
Mick and Molly Hayne the Camp and they're Americans. They

(02:48):
came out here many years ago and they had a brewery.
They started in New Mexico, of all places, moved to Colorado.
They had a brewery called Eddie Line. They came out
here and they thought, well, we'll start Eddie Line in
New Zealand. And so for a while there was well
there's still are so there's another one in America, but
they don't own it anymore. They sold that to sort

(03:08):
of put the money into developing the one here in
New Zealand. So it's and they've been in the business
for a pretty pretty long time now, and they do
great beers. They win lots of awards. They're incredibly popular.
And you know, I think the other thing they have
they started out with a sort of a pizza place,

(03:32):
and there is still it gets more confusing rhymes. There
is still a sort of an Eddye Line pizza place
in just outside of Richmond, in the Richmond area, but
the Eddieline brewery people moved out of there and set
up their own production brewer in a separate place. And

(03:54):
now they have a restaurant that serves sort of classic
kind of New Mexican. There's lots of tacos, nacho's, that
kind of thing, because they know the cuisine from that area.
That's where they're from. So it's a it's a really
good experience, I have to say, Edieline. So if people
are in the Melton area, they should look them out,

(04:14):
look out for them. And the beer I wanted to
mention is called crank Yanker crank yanka, Yeah, as in
you are yanking on the cranks of your petals while
you're mountain biking. Okay, Yeah, And it takes its name
because I think where they were in Colorado, there were

(04:36):
lots of mountain bike trails around them. Yep. So the
I don't know how who came up with the name
crank Yanker, but I think it was the idea, like,
you know, you're going up these steep hills in Colorado
and you really have to yank on the cranks. Yeah.
And it's an i PA and it just won a
gold medal at the recent New Zealand Bear Awards. It's

(04:58):
a it's been around for many year. It's a classically strong, sturdy,
reliable American style I p A. So for people who
like that kind of nice, hoppy bitter, just really enjoyable
Friday Saturday night beer, I reckon cranky Anka.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
There we go.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah, Eddieline and Nelson get there for some tacos.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Fantastic sounds real good. Michael, Hey, always great to catch up.
Let's do it again next week. Thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
All right, Brian cheers
