Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's gum boots or rugby boots.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
The Country Sport Breakfast has your covered on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary twelve minutes away from eight o'clock,
catching up with Scott McLaughlin out of Indie Cars after
eight this morning. But right now, this event is bigger
than Ben hur I've been going now twenty one years.
As I mentioned, back in two thousand and four when
the AMS Game started in the Bay, there were seventeen schools,

(00:23):
seven hundred and sixty competitors. This year, Kelly Shushka, what
was at thirteen thousand plus athletes?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Oh yeah, just under thirteen thousand athletes, three hundred and
ninety seven schools this year, Brian.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
You had the official opening on Sunday, And it doesn't
get much bigger when you can even have the Prime
Minister there to officially open the games as well, does it?

Speaker 1 (00:45):
No, I does. It was such a privilege to have
him ad Minister centered there as well, So yeah, feel
very privileged that they were able to open the games
for us.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
The fantastic event is the fact that many many of
our Olympic athletes to this day have been Ames Games
athletes in the past. Even my producer marked at water
polo and basketball.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
There, oh, fantastics.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
But you've had a few Olympians turn up in the
course of the last four days.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Yeah, we have. We had a really great turnout of
guest speakers at the opening ceremony this year, which was fantastic.
Some of our gold medal Black fans, Sam Lane from
the Black Sticks, Simon Cochran who's one of our champion
ultra runners, Julian David was there as well, and Sam
Lane was here yesterday hanging out with some of the

(01:37):
kids at hockey. But yeah, we had a few more
surprises during the week which is really exciting. So grateful
for their time.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
When it all started back twenty one years ago, I
think there were just a few sporting codes football, netball,
hockey and cross country. How many sporting codes Thet's stone round.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Yeah we're at twenty seven this year. So yeah, two
year sporting codes this year. Surfing and orienteering two things
savage yesterday and orienteering kicks off today. So really excited
to have them as a part of our Aims Games family.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Is the surf looking good?

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Oh look it's a little bit flat, but but yeah,
they did well yesterday, still enough for this age group,
which is fantastic, and a few contingency days of our
sleeves if it doesn't quite go our way.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
And we've got overseas teams and one that's impressed me
out of Fiji as a Fijian rugby sevens team. Now
seven's kicked off yesterday. How are they getting on?

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah, but not doing too badly. I think what they
bring to the game is their incredible hard and soul.
They've got a fantastic spirit out there on the field.
And again, it's such a privilege to have been here,
all of our international schools that have had quite a
journey to get here, both both in terms of miles
but also in terms of that fundraising journey that they've
had to undertake as a school.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
And there's quite a bit going on in the pool
across the next few days, isn't there swimming and also
water a pollo.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yes, yeah, yeah, we've got a really big contingent of
water polo players in swimmers this year as well. So yeah,
the pools around the town are definitely the place to be.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
I mean, you're using I guess every conceivable facility in
the bay really aren't you for all these events.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
We are and look, it's a testament to our community.
I think how welcoming they are for us to come
in and use the facilities for a week. But yeah,
we are held at twenty nine different venues across Torono
in the western the eighteen two fantastic.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
It's great for the kids, even golf for them at
to Pooky Golf Club.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah. Absolutely, Yeah, a few golf courses in the.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Next this week, fantastic, Kelly, any any major issues so
far O than going to plan.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Oh, look nothing, You've ordered good weather for me. So yeah,
we're in a much better place than real we were
this time last year when I was talking to in
Torrential rain.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Stunning forecast today, nineteen fine, tomorrow, pretty good on Thursday.
It all wraps up a bit cloudy Friday, so I
think you can charge on into the week knowing it's
going to be pretty good.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Mate, Well done, fantastic, Thank you, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Oh, absolute pleasure and good luck. It's an incredible event.
I mentioned the number of athletes over thirteen thousand. The
Olympic Games in Paris had ten thousand and seven hundred.
It's an interesting comparison isn't it
