Speaker 1 (00:00):
Motorsport on the Country Sport Breakfast powered by CRC five
five six made right here in New Zealand.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
We're talking motorsport now on the show where the IndyCar
Series comes to an end this coming weekend on the
speedway at Nashville Nashville Super Speedway. Joining us on the
show this morning, the man sitting in third in the championship,
fifty points off leader and the last winner of the
last round, Key We Scott McLachlin, soon to be a dad. Morning,
Scottie Man, look very very well. More important, more importantly,

(00:32):
how are you doing?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Good?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Good? Excited? You know, last race of the season coming
up this week and in a really good spot from
from how we're feeling going into it, and car has
been really good and we've had a really good.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Run the last a month or so. So yeah, I
can't believe at the end of the year, but it
is and soon going to be a baby season for
me and my wife, So it's all happening.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, that's exciting for you. Really, your first little is ju.
When's the baby jew?

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, baby's due October thirteen. It was that she's measured
a couple of weeks earlier. It looks like so it
might be on for a pretty exciting end of September.
So we'll see. But yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure. Hopefully
everything goes well, that's the main thing. And yeah, she's
all healthy.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yeah, absolutely, We our thoughts that go out to you. Actually, well,
this race this weekend not on the streets of Nashville.
I've always enjoyed watching the racing in Nashville, but you're
on the oval there. Are you a fan of the
move from the street circuit to the oval?

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, I mean it's we did what we could to
keep the race in Nashville. There's a little bit of
a problem with some construction. They're building a new NFL
study in there, so trying to get downtown and logistically
it was just too hard, so movement to the oval.
I mean, I'm a fan because I've felt like we've
been really good the last few races and been good

(01:55):
on ovals, and I feel really good about everything. So yeah,
we'll see. It's a place I've never I've actually never
stepped foot in the place in the track, so this
will be the first time I've been there, and same
for a lot of people. The first time that we've
been there, so yeah, see if we can sort of
you know, start off, to start off on the first trip.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
There, right, you seem to have mastered the ovals coming
off Milwaukee where you had a great win. In fact,
it was fantastic for New Zealand. We had Kiwi's first
and sick and so obviously you're getting to like the
ovals a bit now.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah, it's something to get a really good feel for
like what I want and what I need from the car,
which is so important, and then having the confidence to
put the car where it needs to be positioned to
make moves and be aggressive at the right times and
seeing the race sort of unfold ahead. It is really important.
But it all comes down the experience, and that's why,
you know, people like Will Power and Scotty Dixon and

(02:48):
then the guys that I've been around for years, you know,
they always find themselves out the front of an oval
race because they just know where to put the car.
They know where to be aggressive. We're not to be
aggressive at different points of the race, and I'm slowly
learning that I've got a long way to go, but yeah,
I'm really I'm really enjoying it. And it's been a
lot of fun, you know, learn a whole different type
of racing that I never really have done before.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
You seem to have the car pace. I mean, I've
been looking at the stats and you've led more laps
than anyone else in the series by a hell of
a lot.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Really, Yeah, that's a that's a bit a sweet stat
for me, because you know, obviously you want to you
want to finish the job. But you know, we've been
every race this year. I think we've been close to
leading our lap and I think, you know, that's that's
just progress for us, and we'll just keep working at it.
But you know, I, yeah, I feel really really comfortable
in the sport right now. So I've got a really

(03:37):
keen understanding of what i want from the car and
when I go to each track because most of the
tracks have been to before now and that that's a
huge difference and it's only going to help me in
the future. And there's no doubt in my mind that
if it's not this year, you know, at least the
years to come we can we can challenge for five
hundred wins and and championships as well.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Do you think this is the season? Perhaps it maybe
got away from you. I mean, if it wasn't for
that DQ go way back to I think it was
Race one where you had thirty six points taken away
from you. There was a couple of unlucky crashes with teammates.
It could have been a different story, couldn't it.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah, for sure. Man, Like it's you know, a couple
of things that have happened throughout the you know, throughout
the week or throughout the year. Sorry, I've been pretty
it's stung a little bit, but you know that's just
the part and past of a championship season. It's so
long and you just can't give away things when you
know they're in your hands. And I learned that the
hard way, and you can't. But I've also learned that

(04:32):
in supercars as well. And you know, the first few
seasons that I had in supercars were tough, and then
eventually it all sort of clicks where you just know
you've got to bite the bullet and take positions. You know,
make a seventh place to sixth place or sixth place
the first place, and you know, figure it out. And
you know, that's something you learn all the way. And
regardless of how many when we won three championships in Australia.

(04:55):
I felt like I had a lot of experience, but
it's just a whole different type of racing. I've got
to learn and and get comfortable with and it'll come.
But yeah, for sure that you know, we've had to
speed to win the championship this year, but it may not.
We may just fall short under some circumstances and to bummer.
But at the same time, we learn from them and
I'll just get better. I know that for sure.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
And halfway through the season you changed to the new
hybrid POWD unit would seemed a little bit unusual. Have
you enjoyed that extra challenge and adjusting to that.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Yeah, I really have. I've enjoyed it more than I
thought I would, be honest, Like it's initially I was
a little daunted by, like you know, man, there's gonna
be a lot to learn and figure out. But I've
really enjoyed. Like you know, the nuances are like working
out like you know where I you know what where
I pushed the button to use the hybrid? How do
I regenerate the battery so I can use it? You know,

(05:47):
there's so many different things that we're doing, plus on
top of that, you're trying to say fuel, you're trying
to go fast. You know, you push the path to
worry about. There's so many little things now that are
on the lap that you've got to do manually, and
that's you know, it's put a little bit of a
challenge for people that you know, if people can't do it,
you know, you've got to learn pretty quickly otherwise you're
going to fall away. And I've managed to sort of

(06:07):
pick it up pretty quick. And that's I work really
hard on it too to understand it and know what
I want from it. And I've really enjoyed that.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Alex Plow leads the championship. If if he doesn't start,
you could in theory win the championship. I noticed on
on X today you actually invited him around for for
a meal food poison. You might put him out.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Mate, Yeah, no, I said, you know, I never want that.
But obviously, if there's a bad fish, that's just you know,
the risky he takes. But nah, he's a good guy,
Alex's and he's an incredible race card. Rather but just
having a bit of fun because obviously there's a there's
a very small chance that we can do this, but

(06:48):
you know, at the end of the day, you know,
if he starts the race, we're out of the championship.
So you know, we're just having a bit of a
joke on there. But ultimately anything can happen. I still
believe on a inn it like you know, like Alex
Nearly didn't start the race last race, so it's you know,
it could happen. But a guy like that, in a
team like that, it's hard to believe.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
And Scotty, the season finishes pretty early compared to the
other series. If you asked the Boss for a chance
of maybe doing Bathurst in coming years, yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
I mean it's for sure I'll be watching Bathist this year,
probably with a baby in my lap. But you know,
I think, you know, it's yeah, that was a period
of my life where you know, I really enjoyed. I
don't know, I haven't really I think one day, for sure,
I'd love to come back. But yeah, I haven't really
sort of bothered RP with a question yet because I'm

(07:38):
really focused on what I'm doing here and then maybe
one day we can go back there.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Absolutely, Scotty, I wish you all the very very best
for the season ending race. This coming weekend and all
the best you and Kylie for the for the little
one on its way next month as well. Thanks for
joining us.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Mate, Thanks man, I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Scott McLaughlan out of the US. So that race is
at five o'clock on Monday morning's Cot Dickson actually came
back from being and third place in the championship to
win it, so it is possible. When I was talking
about Scottie and Alex Palau on x SO, this is
what Scott mcgloughlin said to Alex Palau. He said, Hey, Alex,
wanted to invite you over for dinner this week. I'm

(08:15):
making sushi from scratch. Don't worry though, My fish guys
are legit. And Alex Palau came back cool, send me
the location, and then again Alex Pilau returned. After careful consideration,
I regret to inform you that I must respectfully decline
your offer, Scott mcgloch But of fun and games going
on they see the racing's great and well done to

(08:38):
Scotti mcglochlan doing so well this season
