Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the Latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
On the show as we always do on a Thursday morning,
and catch up with Michael Cooper. Good morning, Michael, Hope
you are well.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Good Moonnye.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Brian all is well indeed fantastic. Well, last week we
chose three affordable white wines and a bubbly, so we
thought this week maybe we'll go to the red department.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Well, I think, as you know, as we mentioned last week,
there's no shortage of really good wines out there, and
so what's exciting is when you can pinpoint wine that
number one is delicious and number two you think it
almost over delivers in terms of the quality, is greater
than what you would normally get at its particular price point.
So these are what I think of has been great

(01:03):
value wines. They're not necessarily cheap wines, but they're wines
that you think, wow, you know, I would that was
great value and I'd buy it again.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Alrighty, Well, where do we start.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Well, let's start with a Rose Thornberry Hawks Bay Rose
twenty twenty three. It's price sharply. This rose is only
fifteen dollars.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
It's blended for Merlow and Mailbeck. It's bright pink, it's light,
medium bodied. It's got vibrant peach, strawberry and watermelon flavors.
They show very good delicacy and freshness. It's just off dry,
which makes it smooth. It's got liveli acidity. So it's
pretty much everything you'd want in the glass of rose.

(01:51):
And you can buy it for fifteen dollars.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, that's very very reasonable, wasn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah. Thornbree Hawks Bay Rose twenty twenty three. Now, one
of the reasons that a wine like that offers such
good value is it's part of the large company's output.
Thornbree is a brand that's owned by Villa Marias, so
it's part of that same Villa Maria s Valley Vital
Thornbree empire. And so what comes through is number one,

(02:17):
they know how to make wine. The number two you
get they've got the economies of scale off of big value.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Absolutely, all right, that's taking care of the rose.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
Which one's next, Well, let's go for Pino noir ever popular,
and this is a wine that surprised me because listeners
can buy it for I set the advertised for twenty
three dollars to say twenty seven, so round about the
twenty five dollar mark, which is fairly modest for a.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Very very good pino noir. In fact, I would argue
that this wine is as good as many pino noirs
that would be ten dollars high priced.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Jackson Estate Homestead Marlborough Pino Noir twenty twenty one. Now
it's great value. It's been matured in tanks and French
oak barrels, and I think that's part of what's probably
helped to get the price down is that they haven't
put it all into French oak barrels, you know, with
a high percentage maybe of new oak barrels. They've been

(03:14):
able to cut the costs of it by putting some
of the wine into into tanks. But it has retained
those nice, savory, complex flavors that we want in pino noar.
It's full bodied, it's got strong, right vibrant flavors and
cherries and plums and spices, and those flavors have got
excellent depth. It's also got celaring potentials. So if a

(03:38):
listener wanted to buy you know, a few and just
open won a year over the next three or four years.
That would work. Well, that's Jackson the State Homestead, Marlborough
Pino No. Twenty twenty one. Expect to pay about twenty
five dollars.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
All right, what's fixed?

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Well, okay, we all love Ossie reds and here's one
I think that's familiar, widely seen on supermarkets. It does
deliver the goods really well. Taylor's Estate Charras twenty twenty one.
You can buy it for eighteen dollars South Australian Red.
It's instantly likable, it's a great buy. It's dark, it's

(04:14):
full bodied, it's got strong, various spicy flavors. It's got
hints of black pepper and dark chocolate, jentle tannin. So
that means it's smooth, and it's got excellent debt. So
for an unexpectedly good value Ossie read, I recommend Taylor's
Estate Charras twenty twenty one.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Alright, alrighty number at number three this is.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
And look, the third read is the one that I
think is an absolute. It's stunner when it comes to value,
so good. I'm very tempted to go out and buy,
you know, a dozen myself. It's you can buy it
for the I think the least you'd find it for
would be sixteen dollars, the most about twenty dollars. At

(04:59):
twenty dollars, it's a great buy. At twenty five dollars,
it would be an excellent buy. This is Vital Reserve
Hawks Bay Merlow Cabinet, Sauvignon, twenty twenty. Now it's from
an excellent year. It's four years old. It's a wine
that you could drink between now and twenty thirty. It's
been aged for eighteen months in French oak barrels. It

(05:22):
was grown in the Gimblet Gravels, a prestigious district in
Hawk's Bay. It's full of youthful energy, deeply colored mouth filling.
It's got generous red berry and black currant flavors, spicy
and nutty notes adding complexity. It's a surprisingly refined red wine,
you know, for something that you can buy for under

(05:43):
twenty dollars. So that's Vital Reserve Hawks Bay Merlow Cabinet, Sauvignon,
twenty twenty, an absolute steel at sixteen to twenty dollars.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
I'm just written that one down. Next you might have
to go and try a bottle of that myself.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Money back guarantee.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Fantastic, Always great to chat. Let's do it again next week.
Thank you so much, good Bright so hell yeah, Michael Cooper,
I go to a wine man here on gold Sport
