Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the Country.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Sport Breakfast is proudly brought to you by Access Solutions,
elevating you and your business to a higher level.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Thursday morning, on the show, We're going to catch him
before he catches the big bird and crosses the ditch
for the very tasty Test match, the Betterslow Cup Test
number one Saturday night. It'll be afternoon over there, Gregor
Paul joins us this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Morning, Gregor, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
This is going to be an absolute ripper, more so
coach versus coach, Scottie Robertson versus Joe Schmidt.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, look, you built it up quite nicely there. There
is a definite element to that, particularly pecant I supposed
by the fact that you know, Joe Shmid was with
Phil Blacks last year. There's probably an alternative universe where
he potentially could have applied have been the head coach
because you know he has been a head coach of
Ireland for a long time, but you know he chose

(00:57):
not to. He was picked up immediately by the Waldis
And so you've got these two guys, well, one with
a lot of international experience, one with not very much,
and he's the one with the Wallabies at the moment.
And while he probably hasn't had a huge impact yet,
you know, with the Wallabies, I think, you know, it's
a long term project before I think we're going to

(01:17):
start to see results come out and then, but there
will probably be some kind of influence on view in
Sydney on Saturday. I would imagine we've led.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
A lot of intellectual property cross the Testment, not just
Joe Schmid and the Wallabies, I mean the forward coach
Scott what's his name, Stuugh Kron is there as well.
That's concerning too.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yep, yep. And look he's bringing it's not so much
what he's he's not bringing anything directly out of the
All Blacks with them. The way that Joel probably is
that he is bringing a lot of a lot of
rugby intelligence into the Australian system. And look, to be honest,
they probably need it and I don't think anyone would
be grudge them that that. You know, they've got a

(01:59):
kiwi who you know, who's got experience at tottening forwards
up and getting them to scrummage. Well, well yeah, I
think we can all celebrate that because it's been a
perennial weakness for the Ords vis and if they can
get that part of the game right, which they haven't
really for oh, I don't know forever, then you know,
we can start to get a contest going again.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
There was a time when we were top of the world.
Nowadays New Zealand rugby really is underperforming, and you wrote
a wonderful article in the Herald about you know, our
recent success is the under twenties finishing third in the
Junior Championship, the sevens, the mean sevens dumped out of
the Olympics, the Black Ferns and so on. So we're
not topic of the world anymore, are we?

Speaker 2 (02:42):
But you're not. Maybe that's an inevitable part of professionalism.
You open the doors to those countries with greater financial
resources to use them and potentially use their economic might
to build better and more sustainable rugby systems. I don't
know that's what's happened, or whether it's just a poor

(03:04):
period for New Zealand that I don't know what the
answers could be. Super rugby is a that week the
country was shut off during COVID, you know, locked out
ideas at locked out people, as I had an impact.
I'm not sure it's Look, it's the results are there
in black and white. The reasons why you're underperforming, well,
they're a little bit great, but somebody needs to get

(03:25):
into that and needs to work out you know why
that's happening.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Do you feel as though both teams, the Wallabies and
the Old Blacks are sort of they're blooding in new players,
they're experimenting a little bit for the future more so
than now.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Well, I'd say something about the Old Blecks is that
when you place for the old legs, so if you
look at the history of the Old Lecks, you're not
allowed to do that. That's not part of the gig here.
The All Blacks don't get a chance to build a
narrative about rebuilding or life stuff. We lost a lot
of players after the World Cup, and that's been the truth,
you know, for the professional age. But no coach has

(04:01):
been able to come in and say, hey, look, chaps,
would you mind awfully if we lost a whole heap
of games for the next couple of years because we've
got some young players that we need to get you
ready for test match rugby. That's that's just simply not
how it works. So when you're the Old Blacks, you
need to win. You know, no matter what age of
players are, what experience they've got, you need to win

(04:23):
and there is no rebuilding face. So I think I've
made my answer pretty clear to that. Will they like
the Wallabies, Maybe it's different over there, maybe they've got
a bit of leeway and time. You know that it
can be afforded to them. But for New Zealand, you
win now and you develop your team for the World Cup.
At the same time.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
It's interesting both teams coming off losses, the Old Blakes
to South Africa and the Wallabies more importantly that huge
loss to Argentina. So they'll want to turn that round.
So I can I can see it being a lot
tighter this Test match. What about you?

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yeah, like I think so, And probably an admiration for
the Wallabies over there. Goodness knows how happened, But I
don't think that's a true reflection of where they're at.
They'll they'll be targeting the Old Blacks because they'll want
to play well because it's you know, it's the Old Blacks.
There'll be a good pride in Sydney. The sun will
be out and they're under a bit. You know, they're
under a bit of obligation to play better than they

(05:16):
did the last time, so I think I think that
will bring them up to the boil a little bit best.
I don't see them capitulating them the same way that
they did before. So yeah, look, there is a bit
of quality in that Wallabyy team. Some of the backs
are not too bad. That loose forwards are pretty good.
They've got a couple of big locks. They're not awful.
But yeah, they're going to have to play well to

(05:38):
keep it competitive and I think that they will.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
They're going to look forward to your call along with
Elliott Smith on Saturday night, New Zealand time of that match.
So I have a great trip over the ditch and
we'll we'll talk next week.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
We'll do Gregor.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Paul joining me here this morning on gold Sport the
Country Sport Breakfast and as I mentioned, we'll have a
live commentary on on gold Sport. He'll be sitting alongside
Elliot Smith in the commentary box. It kicks off at
accorded to six just note that time other unusual time really,
but it's an afternoon game over in Australia. So the
rugby championship might be in tatters. Really, we're not going

(06:15):
to win that one, and we've lost the Freedom Cup,
but we need to retain the Bleederslow Cup. I'm picking
it could be a very close game out of Sydney
on Saturday night, not far away. I'm excited, and of
course the naming of the All Black team too. That
happens at nine o'clock this morning. The All Black team
will be named and I'm picking a few changes as well.
