Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on
Gold Sport, Out of.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Farm Advisors and Eggs Safe New Zealand. Jim Finlay joining us. Morning.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Jim, Good morning, Brian.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Very important weekend. This weekend, daylight saving gets underweight. A
lot of farmers don't like that, do they.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Not to start with, but it's pretty harsh on them,
you know. They just start to get into being able
to get out to milk the cows in the morning,
at the weave, at the sunshine around, and then all
of a sudden it's dark again for a few months.
But once they get used to sort of being able
to get home and have a barbecue with the kids
in the afternoon, it's not too bad. Oh.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
It's the same with radio announces. Really, you know, suddenly
we get knocked around a bit too.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Really, that's right to do some early starts.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah, absolutely, So this coming weekend, and I guess that
signals that almost the arrival of summer. So I guess
soil temperatures will start to warm up. We've had some
crazy weather lately, haven't we.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Well, we certainly have. We normally get a pretty nasty
spell at the sort of the end of the first
week in September, and it's about ten days late this year,
but you know, it does happen at this time. It's
that sort of spring time of the year, isn't it,
And it all happens. But we've had some extremely good
soil temperatures. You know, they've been up sort of fourteen
degrees celsius, which is really just sort of two degrees

(01:12):
higher than what it normally is at this time of
the year, and of course that's one of the things
that sort of spurs along the pasture growth. And we've
had some amazing grass growth. And I went for I
had to go and do a job up at Maramarua yesterday,
and so you know, you get around a fair bit
of the country and you can just see the stuff
that side. It's being made and the grass is sort
of waving in the wind, and it really the countryside

(01:33):
looks really magnificent.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Well, that's great for ra the schedil. So let's have
a look and see how things have come out the
last week.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Right, we will run through that very quickly. If we
look at our eighteen kg yxlam. The schedule is in
the North Island seven dollars fifteen a kg in the
south is seven dollars ten The twenty one KGMX muttin
is three dollars in the north and three dollars in
the south. Our P two steer the two seventy to
two ninety five kg steers six seventy five in the
north and thirty five in the south. Our bona cow

(02:02):
the one sixty to one ninety five kg cow is
five dollars in the north and four forty five in
the south. The two seventy to two ninety five kg
ball of six fifty in the north and five point
eighty in the south. And our sixty kg venison is
eight eighty five in the north and eight seventy five
in the south. Bryan and it was.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Quite pleasing, I guess during last week's were dairy price
is just a little lyft.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Yes, we were quite boyd about that. Some had been
talking of quite a decent sort of lyft because it
could be the last buying shipment to go off before
Ramadan over in the Middle Eastern areas there. But yeah,
we had a point eight of a percent left and
it's really supporting the current increases in the farm gate
price for milk and our whole milk powder is up

(02:44):
one and a half percent. It's up to three thy
four hundred and forty eight US a ton. The skim
milk padder is up two point two percent, and the
tet of cheese up to two point nine percent. But
the big one was the mozzarella this time it went
up four point five percent. But yeah, I think that
they're very good and sort of very solid sort of prices. Brian,
your weekly rant.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
This week's a real beauty. I mean it came out,
it was official we're in a technical recession. But Rabobank
released its Farmer Confidence report last week and that's looking
pretty positive.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Absolutely. The big thing is that, you know, it really
looks to me as though the farmers again will be
leading the country out of recession. About the end of
twenty twenty one, that got down to a negative twenty
five percent the farmer confidence and at the moment has
come up to plus three percent, which is a huge,
big shift. You know, that's a twenty eight percent turnaround.
And that's across all three main agricultural sectors, you know,

(03:33):
the dairy, the sheep and beef and the horticulture.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
That's really really good. Indeed, the beef prices are looking
pretty good, aren't they.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Oh, the beef prices are quite comfortable at the moment,
and there's been quite a move into beef away from
the sheep because the sheep prices have been very, very difficult.
If we look at them back in October twenty and
twenty two, they got down to eight dollars and eight
cents of kilogram FOB whereas as I sorry that they

(04:00):
dropped down from twenty twelve sorry, twelve dollars sixty three
year kilogram in October twenty two down to eight dollars
and eight cents in December twenty three. So you know,
there's been quite a big drop. That's a sort of
a fifty percent drop almost, and it's it's quite massive,
and it's had a huge impact on the sheep industry
and that's why there's probably a million less lambs going
to be harvested this year.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Then there we go, all right, Jim, nice to, Nice
to catch up, mate, have a great week, and we'll
talk again next week.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Good Thank you, Brian, and goodbye to the listeners.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
