Joining us on the show this morning. Josh Geary winning
the Charles Tour Mount Open on the weekend after a
sensational final round sixty four to escape the chasing teenager
Robbie Turnbull. Thirty nine year old Gary what a twelve
under two shots clear of Turnbull to become the winningest
Charles Tour player, and he joins us on the show
this morning. Morning, Josh, congratulations, mate, morning here, thanks a lot,

(00:33):
Sorry to give out your age, thirty nine years old.
You're getting up there now.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, got a bit quiet with but yeah, I am
speaking up there. It's amazing whe the years ago.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
What a fantastic round that final round sixty four? What
worked so well for you?

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Well, actually sixty six, I mean sixty four does sound better.
But I played nicely just Teddy Grant was very solid
and I had a couple of nice puts near the
end that went in the Yeah, one of those days
where everything was sort of going how it should have really,
So sometimes golf feels a bit easier than what it
should do.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I imagine, you know, you'd know the mount course fairly well, yeah,
I did.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
I grew up playing there. But also with the Black Teeth,
it's been switched out a bit longer, and the way
the greens were set up were very hard and fast
and fantastic, so it was a different to how I
recall it. A lot of trees gone now, but it
was playing very well.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
And of course in the course of the weekend as well,
did everything go away like it did yesterday or was
it a struggle in the early stages?

Speaker 1 (01:37):
I com played really well from TV green the whole
whole event. The first day had a bit of a
nightmare on the greens and didn't make much and it
was pretty solid all week to be honest, it wasn't. Yeah,
nothing really was outstanding, but it was nothing too bad either,
So just a really solid week, which was which was
nice for a change.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
And as I mentioned in our little intro, there the
winningest winningest player on the Child's Tour. That's pretty good too.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, absolutely take that. Yeah, it's pretty kill for sure.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
So the next tournament on the tour is the Tarong
Open at the Tarong of Golf Club, a tournament that
you you head into is defending champion. So what is
it about these Tarong of courses and Mount courses that
you've just played there so much?

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Yeah, I don't know. I guess there's a bit of
local knowledge for sure. It's nice to have your friends
and families that support helps as well, and they always
pop out my local events. Yeah, and I think that
course not does does half over the years. And yeah,
it's a bit of familiar familiarity, I guess with the places,
so it definitely goes a long way.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
They're quite different, the Mount course compared to the Tarong
of course. What's the difference in them for you?

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean Mount a bit more forgiving, I guess.
Off the Tea Town is very tight, but it's also
very you know, get the ball if you're playing well.
But there's a lot more out of bounds and play
and potential penalty strokes. But it's probably a lower scoring
course to be a lot of birdies to be had,
which will take some good putting I think next week.
So yeah, it's always the course that guys can shoot

(03:06):
low numbers on, so it's quite an exciting watch.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
You'd be pretty impressed by that. The youngsters coming through,
like teenager Robbie Turnbull. He was just behind you, wasn't he.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah. I played with Robbing all all four days. It
played very solid, very impressive. So he's about one. Everything
he's played in the last a few months and he's
going really well. Yeah, there's guys are said as you're
getting younger and better, so it's really cool to see and.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Looking at your season all told, how's it been.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
I've heard most of the winter off to the other so
pretty quiet at home. First year. I haven't really traveled
outside the countries for the winter, but coming up it
was good up until the eight fool before the break
and then coming out we've got some bigger anton Ozzi,
which the top off a nice year.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
I was just mentioning that you're the winningest player on
the Charles Tour, so you're passing actually Michael Henry, so
that's pretty special.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Really yeah, absolutely good the lateral age to rack up.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Well Josh again, congratulations and all the very very best
for the for the next the Childs Tour one in
Tarana this coming weekend. Awesome, thanks for the mate, absolute pleasure, Josh.
Gary superb final round, as you mentioned, a sixty six,
although we'll give him a sixty four whatever, So a
fantastic result for him. So yeah, The Charles Tour continues

(04:25):
in the Bay of Plenty. This is coming weekend
