Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary. We're talking the America's Cup
now on the Country and we have made it to
the Challenger Series Final day one, or more importantly the
Louis Verton Cup and that famous quote to win the

(00:21):
America's Cup first, you have to win the Louis Verton Cup,
either at Italy's Luna Rossiprada Perelli or Great Britain's Inn.
The Ospritannia will challenge Team New Zealand for the Old
Mug next month, with the two the last team challengers
standing out of the semifinals for the Louis Vauton Cup.
First race around midnight New Zealand time this evening. Joining

(00:44):
us out of Bus Salona is sailing pundit and world
class sailor himself, Chris Stille Morning.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Chris you mine, how are you mate?

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Very well? Thank you? So the two heavyweights of world
sailing coming together. It's exciting, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
So there's definitely been a little bit of a buzz
start in the build around here in Barcelona, obviously with
the Youth America's Cup stuff going on at the moment,
which will come to a head tomorrow and on the
start of the moves on Final series, where we'll obviously
come to realize who the challenge is going to be
for the America's Cup.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's almost like a boxing match too, heavyweights Jimmy Spittle
up against Ben Ainsley. It doesn't get much better, does it.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
No.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
I mean, obviously there's a bit of history there between
Jimmy and Ben, who we're.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Two pretty big parts of that historic comeback.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Back in San Francisco when they were sailing together, but
now obviously very much on different pathways, sailing against each
other and two pretty strong personalities.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
I think we're going to be in a and for
a treat to see some pretty good racing over the
next few days.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
It's the best of thirteen Finals series. Do you think
this is too many races? I mean there's quite a lot, really,
isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Well, it spends how you're asking, I think in terms of.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
From a challengers pertective from the teams that are fighting
it out to get that spot to challenge the teams.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
I think the longer the series goes, the better because the.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
More chance they get to learn off one another and
develop and.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
And put their best foot forward.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
You know, whoever makes it to that final series in
the America's Cup I think will be pretty well polished
by the end of it. Yeah, for the defenders, team
is ill and I think the series can't.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Be fast enough. I'll be hoping for a whitewash whatever
way it goes.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
I think, which way do you see it going? I
mean they're both strong teams, Luna Rossi, Prada or Britannia.
Which one is the better one of them?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
I think the Italians have definitely always looked like the
strongest challenger, I guess sort of in the last year
or so in terms of where their test plant platform
got to and then obviously when they launched launched their raceboat.
They've always looked like a very sort of solid outfit.
And I think those two race yachts, you know, the Luderros,

(03:04):
the boat in the in the Emirates, seems Gillen boat.
Visually there looks like a lot of similarities. They're a
lot closer this time around than they were in.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
The last America's Cup.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
But one thing you sort of count denies that the
improvement the performance gains that the British have had over
the last few weeks, you know, since the preliminary regatta,
you know, where they were sort of struggling a little
bit for for paces, particularly in the lighter is to
obviously being in a position to win the win the

(03:32):
round robin and the lous Baton sort of challenge series,
and then obviously when the semi final as well. I
think on paper, I think they've certainly got the momentum,
but I think the conditions might play but pretty pretty
strong part in it. So you know, it looks like
breeze on tomorrow, which I think certainly will suit the.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
British, but if.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
We if we see some lighter ears, I think the
Italian boat might be might be a fit bit stronger
in those conditions as well. So I know that doesn't
give you much from sort of sitting on the fence there,
but I think if I had to pick someone, I
think on paper, I think the Italian's probably still the flight,
they would have the edge.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
But one thing that's probably going to it's probably going
to come.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Down to is just the development rate of the two
teams over the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
So I think we'll play a big part in it.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
You know, where they are tomorrow when we first get
to see them doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be
in the same position in a couple of weeks time.
So it's almost a race to develop as much as
is a race against the competitor.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
And I guess for Team New Zealand, they'll just be
sitting back, weren't they on the sideline, you know, watching
to see what developments the teams have made.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I mean it's it's pretty late in the game now,
so if you if you want to make any sort
of drastics of changes to your racet, it's extremely hard
to do. I mean, when when you're talking about building
new components and hardware that there's obviously a lead time
that comes with that. So you know, visually the boats
can't change too much at the stage in the game,

(05:03):
but they'll certainly be looking at, you know, which boats
are optimized in different conditions and where they think they might,
you know, put in terms of being strong and weak,
and there might be little tweaks that they can do
to sort of counteract what they see over over the
next couple of weeks for sure, And.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
These AC seventy five race boats. I mean, they're pretty
sharp looking boats. How much do they differ from the
boats raced in Auckland back in twenty twenty one.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
I think in terms of the performance, I mean, they're
obviously faster, but I think that all the teams have
gotten a lot better with the control systems, the way
that they operate the boats and the maneuvers has definitely
improved a significant amount. You know, one thing that's pretty
evident here in Barcelona that you haven't seen, you know,

(05:51):
when they're racing back in Auckland, for example, was the
sea staters. There's a lot more sort of random here.
It's almost like sailing in a washing machine. You get
way coming from you know, some quite funny angles in
relation to the wind. And so I think that puts
a lot of emphasis on the control systems, and it
puts a lot more importance on the trimmers of the

(06:11):
boat to be able to make sure the boat's sort
of a stable.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Platform that you can control.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
And I think we've seen that in a bunch of
the races previously. You know, teams have had big leads
but have got sort of unstable and maneuvers and all
of a sudden they come off the foil and there's
some big games and losses. So I think, you know,
over the next couple of weeks, we'll certainly see potentially,
you know, might not necessarily be the fast s boat

(06:36):
in a straight line, but it might be the boat
that has a better control system with the boiling aspect,
that might be the overall winner if we get some
sea state.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
We certainly pretty simple. First team to score seven points
secures the challenge. What's the buzz like on the ground
cross over there in Barcelona?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Yeah, I mean the city's definitely starting to live enough.
I've only been there for a couple of days, but yeah,
certainly around the round the team basis down here, there's
there's a very solid sailing presence.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
It's edimant.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
There's a lot of Kiwis and other supporters here for
the yachting around the place, with all the flags and
and what not around the team basis. But I think
it's only going to build over the next few weeks
for sure. Obviously we're still this is the lous beaton
Channel the series final, but the main.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
America's Cup still still weeks away.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
I think, particularly the Keiwi supporters will start start flocking
in numbers over the next few weeks, and I'm sure
by the time you get to the ex of American
Cup South, they'll be a pretty buzz in the city,
that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Fantasta Chris, Hey, thanks for joining us, mate. Enjoy the
racing starting midnight tonight. Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Cheers Mart, Thank you mate.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
That's Christille out of out of Barcelona, and the weather
forecast is showing some pretty as they've described it from
over there, some pretty sporty conditions for the opening two
races of the Cup scheduled for well from midnight tonight.
Is that first race, as I mentioned, with forecasts fifteen
to seventeen not sou westerlies. Two of the world's heavyweights

(08:08):
going head to head. I think it's very good. Actually
get exciting now when you think about it. So Ben
Ainsley versus Jimmy Spittell, who were once teammates back in
what twenty thirteen
