Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rodgers is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on
Gold Sport. Well, we don't often do this on the show,
but we are now talking AFL where the twenty twenty
four AFL Grand Final is coming this Saturday afternoon four
thirty New Zealand time out of the MCG. It'll be
the first non Victorian Grand Final since two thousand and

(00:22):
six and it'll put two of the most recent Grand
Final losers against each other. Sydney Swan's and the Brisbane
Lions are going to play for it all joining us
out of the Daily Telegraph and the Code Sports. Lachlan
McCurdy Morning, Lachlan.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Good morning. Yeah, thanks so much for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Oh, absolute pleasure. What's the buzz like in Melbourne at
the moment.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's it's fantastic. It's building so nicely to this game
because there's so many great narratives and not the most
being the one that you mentioned that these two sides
lost the most two recent Grand finals and there's a
lot of excitement to see which side kind of can
make it one and one on which side's going to
go in too.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
So even though there's no Victorian side, there is there
still a buzz in.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Melbourne, absolutely, and I think there's a genuine connection that
these two teams have probably played the best footy all
year that you've got. The Swans, who had that ten
game winning streak, have been on top of the table
and have played really well, and then in the second
half of the year the Lions are probably the form
side of the competition. So I think there's a general
acceptance that we're going to see some really good football

(01:22):
on Saturday afternoon, and I think that's what most people
are excited for.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Sydney Swans, as you said, the most dominant team all year,
ken they finally win a Grand Final after losing I
think the last three that they've played in.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, it's been a bit of agony for John Longmaier
and his side twenty fourteen, twenty sixteen and twenty twenty two.
They haven't gone to plan at all, unfortunately. But there's
a sense that this year feels different. This is a
more mature version of the team. They probably made it
a little bit early two years ago, but those same
young players have got that experience. I've got that five
from losing that Grand Final to really drive them this time.

(01:57):
And as we said, that they've been playing the football,
the most consistent football all year, and if they can
produce that this weekend, yeah, it's gonna be hard for
the lines to stop them.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
And on the other side, Brisboane lines are looking to
bury the demons of last year and when their first
flag I think in twenty one year, So what will
they need to do to make sure that they go
one better than they did last season?

Speaker 2 (02:19):
So the key against the Swans is really starting hard
and starting early, because if you can put some pressure
on and get that scoreboard pressure on, it can startle
the Swans a little bit. And I think the lines
are really good at that. They've got a dynamic midfield,
They've got some really quality players there, let alone two
time Brownlow medalists Lucky Neil. So if they can get
a few goals early and kind of shock the Swans

(02:40):
and bring up those sort of memories of twenty two
and some of those Grand Finals passed, that might be
the key for Chris Fagan's side.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
I imagine that Melbourne will be swamped by people from
Brisbane and people from Sydney pushing all the Victorians out.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Absolutely, the flights, the hotels, it's gone absolutely nuts in
Victoria this weekend because there's a rugby league final there
as well on the Friday night, so it's going to
be Sports Central, that's for sure. Bill Olives will be
on the one hundred thousand fans expected at the MCG
on Saturday, and there'd be.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
No buzz like it would there be at that ground
for one hundred thousand fans.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
It's just superb and the fact that you get an
international artist like Katie Perry in there as well for
a bit of pregame entertainment. You get the buzz of
these two amazing teams playing football in front of their
own fans. It's going to be something special and it's
not to be missed.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Yeah, the halftime show being a lot of talk about
the Katie Piri performance, about the song selection throughout the week.
Has that all been sorted?

Speaker 2 (03:37):
I think so. She should be doing a bit of
a dress rehearsal, a dress run over the next twenty
four hours or so. She'll get used to the MCG.
She's obviously played there recently in the T twenty World
Cup the Women's final a couple of years ago in
twenty twenty, so she knows the ground well. On how
to perform well, so I'm sure it would be a
lot of the classics and it'll bring a few crowd
members to their feet.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
And looking at both teams on the injury front of
both teams coming and pretty much full strength.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Well, it's going to be close. But there's a big
call looming for the Swans and there captain Callum mill
so he's had an injury cloud. He didn't play last
weekend against Port Adelaide because of a hamstring strain, but
he kind of got challenged by his coach that needs
to push through it. Trained at one hundred percent today
on Wednesday on Wednesday and he did. He was able
to push through that. So now it Thursday afternoon today

(04:22):
is when they're going to make the call on him.
And then on the other side of things for the
Lions that you've got Oscar mcinnerney. He injured his shoulder
twice against Geelong. He's been ruled out and Darcy fought
the bit of a Journeyman's going to come in for
his first game since about April. So that's going to
be a big call and probably where that the game
is going to be one if the Swans can find

(04:43):
a way to get on top around the stop witches
and at the ruck contest.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
So like to look into your crystal ball. Who are
you picking to when and why?

Speaker 2 (04:50):
I'm probably leaning just towards the Swan still at this stage,
I think it'll be closer than they're They're kind of
eighty one point and lost two years ago, that's for sure.
But they've been the most consistent team. They've been on
top for a reason, and I think they're well rested.
They haven't they've had that extra week after the Lions haven't,
and I think they'll just be too good on the day,
a bit too much energy and a bit too much
spark going forward.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Fantastic. It's going to be a great occasion. Lachlan, thanks
for joining us, and Joy.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
That's Lachlan McCurdy joining us out of Melbourne. The Daily
Telegraph and Code Sports report of the game starts at
four point thirty, and we've just heard that Callum Mills,
who he spoke about there, is actually out with a
hamstring injury, so that could make things a little bit
more interesting.
