Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the Country Sport Breakfast is proudly
brought to you by Access Solutions, elevating you and your
business to a higher level. Right, But a hon ko
tonkin when it comes to the All Blacks. The Capital
curses over for the Abs. After a strong thirty three
thirteen win over the Wallabies and that second Bledislow Cup
Test Saturday night, New Zealand's first win in Wellington since
(00:22):
twenty eighteen. We led nineteen thirteen at halftime after a
very strong start by Australia, but we held Australia school
less in the second half, as well as scoring the
first points in the final twenty minutes of the game too.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
For the All Blacks and six Tests, so Elliott Smith
joins us this morning.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Elliott, good morning, Good morning, bka.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Pass mark for the All Blacks.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
You think I think out of that test? Absolutely? Look,
I think it was dominant, especially once the first twenty
or so minutes are out of the way. Dominant probably
without being critical, is how I without being clinical rather
is how I would describe that performance. Similar to the
game in Sydney, it felt like maybe a try away
(01:03):
from breaking the damn wide open. They could have done
it early in the second half that ample opportunity to
do so, didn't quite prehaps rack up the score that
maybe they would have hoped. But if you look at it,
five tries to one wins, a really good defensive standard
times throughout that match, and some pretty good attack as well.
It was I could a step forward with the All Blacks.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
I loved how the Wallaby started though that first teen
to fifteen minutes.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
They looked good, didn't.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
They They did. There was a lot of intent there
and put the All Blacks under pressure and showed a
couple of different things, a couple of Joe Schmidt's sort
of hallmarks, changing the point of attack. On a number
of occasions, we drop off passes from Tennielatupo and Angus
Bell to sort of try and confuse the defensive line
(01:51):
a little bit, and it worked on occasion that switch
play they used to out of a strum when it
looked like they were stacked down to the open side
and to be down blind. That was classic Joe Schmith.
And they had the All Blacks on the racket a
couple of points but for a grounding and the end
goal could have been maybe a couple of tries up
but probably didn't take their opportunities early on and up
(02:14):
and got one reward for it, but probably not enough
to put enough pressure on the All Blacks. Having said that,
if they go in at half time with the lead,
as they very well could have, it might well have
been a different contest. But that descending by the All
Black on half time to go for the try, go
for the corner, and go in for the kill and
take the lead, I thought was a big turning point
(02:34):
in the game.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
The Abs are forced to make twice as many tackles
as the Wallabies in the first halft, so that was
a good one for All Black defense.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
It was, yeah, And looking at those stats here it
was roughly one hundred to fifty that halftime the All
Blacks had made one hundred Australia just fifty. But by
the end of the game we were looking at it
in our commentary booth and I think it evened up
to about one hundred and seventy roughly each life full time,
so Australia had been forced to make the vicinity of
(03:04):
one hundred and twenty odd tackles and the second spell
the All Blacks have been pretty pleased with their defense.
So you know, five tries to one, but Australia had
plenty of possession and that first spell and then towards
the end of the game as well, they were knocking
on the door of the All Black line couldn't get
over and the All Blacks were able to defend through
that passage of play as well, So that will give
(03:26):
them a lot of confidence. That felt like they were
pretty in sync from a defensive system and getting out
making those tackles on the line again without too many infringements.
They consider it a fete in the first spell after halftime,
this one was a lot better. So I think on
that basis, you've got to give the All Blacks credit.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Let's talk about some individuals.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Big talking point heading into that test was Body Barrett
starting at teen over over Damien Mackenzie. So how do
you think body went?
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I thought it was pretty good. Look, I don't think
it's necessarily answered that question definitively, but what I did
like was the paytions that Boden Barrett had around the
park and didn't seem to try to overplay his hands
throughout it. I thought he was comfortable in the role,
just orchestrated things, was quite comfortable changing things around and
(04:16):
didn't feel like he had to pull all the strings,
but just pulled enough in the back line to set
things up throughout the game. So I thought that was
a pretty good performance from Boden Barrett and certainly gives
Scott Robertson food for thought without entirely sort of taking
the mantle of Damien McKenzie. But there's certainly a conversation
that will be ongoing as they head north of these
(04:39):
the five match end of the until So Boden Barrett,
I think can be pretty pleased with his performance. It
wasn't necessarily a statement performance, but it was a pretty
good one I thought from Boden Barrett. And you know,
as I said that, that question now remains live around
at the Beast Maker the all Blacks is at ten
and fifteen and the d coming off the bench.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yeah, I mean at fifteen Will, I mean he was
pretty impressive, wasn't he? Is he? Do you think he's
locked in the fifteen Jersey look?
Speaker 3 (05:05):
I think so. I think there was his best test
before at fullback. Will Jordan looked more comfortable than he
has and I think he's grown into the role over
the last few Test matches. Got an unexpected opportunity in
Sydney last week with Voden Barrett's out injured. I thought
he had a good Test that night and again built
on that in the Capital. The big test will be
(05:27):
those matches to come later in the year where he'll
be put under a lot more pressure, probably than what
the Wallabies were able to do. But his ability to
just find gaps and find the weak shoulders and step through,
you know. He seems to have that ability at fullback
and it reminds me a little bit of when Ben
Smith was on the right wing for the All Black
(05:49):
then transitioned into fullback, very very good right wings. He
might see some of his best rugby coment fullback in
the coming years as well. I think that decision, that
conversation might now be over when it comes to a
first choice All Black team.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
And one of the finds of the international season so
far for the Abs has been Wallace a Titi. Have
we finally found the man that will wear the number
six jersey for the next few years?
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Well yeah, I think so. He has been impressive. Has
any saymans that easton Cape Town with Ethan Blackett are
out injured and has made every poster winner since then
and has built on his performances. You know, was good
on with born hands in Cape Town, perhaps not so
good defensively mister few tackles that night missus Ewart in
(06:34):
Sydney last week. I think it was just one didn't
as any and Wellington on the weekend and with Paul
in hand, he is a real breath around the park,
seems to break the first tackle more often than not,
a lot of carries. I think it was a game
high eighteen on the weekend. Loves having the ball in
his hands. So I think that it's been the selection
(06:55):
of the season for mine from Scott Robinson, unherlded to
an extent head and good performances were a Chiefs in
the back end of the season, but remember I only
played Teachs development so early on in their campaign before
being called in to the top team. It has been
some rise but for Wallace to TV it was interesting
to hear as well Scott Robertson say yesterday that it's
getting to the point now in rugby where it doesn't
(07:16):
really matter what loose boards number you have on your back, six,
seven or eight. It's all about being on the edges
or being in the middle. And you know he was
the TV's playing six, but he could play eight. But
it may not necessarily matter at all, what number easing
what in fact?
Speaker 1 (07:32):
And of course that's the Rugby Championship now done and
auster we finished a second behind South Africa who whopped
u the Pumas. But so how would you grade Scott
Robinson's first rugby Championship so far?
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Look, I think probably give it a six, maybe six
and a half out of ten if I was being generous.
I think three all Blacks wins, three all Blacks losses
as a fifty percent record, that's not good enough for
the All Black But we saw at the end and
yes it was a poor Wallaby scene or a rebuilding
Wallaby scene, were some positive signs. What will Scott robertson rue?
(08:12):
I think it's the miss opportunities from both South African
Test matches, especially they could have won both matches, really
should have won, especially at Alice Park from ten points up.
They've got to be better thee Hopefully the lessons have
been learned. So I think a path mark given it
fifty percent, but not too much more than that. And
(08:32):
hopefully those signs of that building towards the end of
the campaign continues as the All Black Kiad and more.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yeah, they head to the Northern Hemisphere. What's the departure date.
It's only a couple of weeks from now.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Isn't it.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, a couple of weeks away from now. They're naming
the squad next Monday afternoon, so there'll be a the
All Black Squad of thirty six for the end of
the year tour, plus some names as well, twenty nine
for the All Blacks fifteen to it. They're going to
play months that end Georgia in the in Europe, so
(09:04):
you'll be a bit of cross over between those squads,
so it'll be interesting to see just who makes it.
You know, they took a Rugby Championship squad of thirty
six into that, so whether there's any changes to that
squad or whether they cross some of those players over
to the All Blacks have seen that neat game time
will be interesting. Some players will get MPC game time
in the coming days as well. Will be interested to
(09:27):
see whether some of those problems that are boosted for
Ramberly shield challenges and the like. So that's the process
from now, but you used to squad out October the seventh,
and then they depart I think a week or so
after that.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
And Ellie, you've got the call this afternoon at three
o'clock or Black Ferns kick off their WXV one campaign
against Ireland out of Canada.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
What do you expect out of the Black Ferns.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, this is an interesting one again silent the team.
They've only played twice previously, one win, one loss. Has
been a few years since they've met. I think a
couple of weeks back we saw the All Blacks the
Black Fans against England to twicken him. There were some
positive signs in that performance, even in defeat for the
Black Fans came back into it. It could have blonde out
of twenty four meals down. It didn't say and they're
(10:11):
responded well and they've got another try. It would have
been a very very interesting finish. What I want to
see for the Black Fans is the continued build of
their kicking game. It's not where it needs to be
at the moment, especially the way that you know the
top teams like England and France are able to kick.
So this afternoon presents a good opportunity for that and
then some players coming back in getting their their chances
(10:33):
after coming off the bench or not being the twenty
three against England. With England to come again next week
in the WXV, a chance for those players to back
they claim the selection for next Monday Mornings match. So look,
I want to see a clay performance from the Black
Funs and what building on. You know, what were some
promising signs in that gamest England a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Well listen out for your cool three o'clock kick off
