Speaker 1 (00:00):
Motorsport on the Country Sport Breakfast powered by CRC five
five six made right here in New Zealand. Time to
talk motorsport on the show now and one of the
busiest men I think in the world of motorsport, not
just here in New Zealand, is rally driver and part
time team manager Hayden Padden, who joins us this morning. Hayden,

(00:21):
Good morning morning Brian. Last time we spoke, you just
returned from the penultimate round of the European Rally Championship
in Wales. You'd won that one comprehensively and you were
in doubt as to whether you would make it to
the final round, which is coming up in a couple
of weeks from now. What's the story.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
There are, yo, put it again and make sure we
get over there. It was obviously important that we get
over there to try and wrap up the championship and
we didn't have quite enough on the bag to take
the risk of not going. So through people in Europe
and the team and hand the motorsport, they're able to
find some budgets and then you know, we've just said

(00:59):
to basically get point where John and I get ourselves
over there and they'll make the rest possible.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
And this is going to be quite a challenging event
because you go into the event with what a twenty
plus point lead, but you need to finish reasonably high up, don't.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
You you know, irrelevant of what media Francesci does. So
even if he won the rally, then we need a
top six to secure the championship. So that'll be the
mindset that we go with, will be to just basically
focus on what we're doing, and that's obviously to be
in the top six. But I'm saying that, you know,
we had a similar sort of calculation last year, and

(01:31):
there is nothing worse than driving rallies when you know,
you know you're aiming for a certain result, rather than
to drive and flat out and home for a win.
So it sounds simple on paper, but the challenge is
certainly going to be real.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
And the event isn't really on your favorite service. It's
time ac the whole event, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
I look, I don't mind Tarmaic, but is autumn in Poland,
so the likelihood of it being wet and leaves on
the on the road, so when you get you know
a lot of pollution on a wet Tarmic road, it
becomes quite tisy, so but hey, here's the same conditions
for everyone. We just have to adapt at least, I
guess we have a little bit of room for our
margin that you know, we don't need to be pushing

(02:11):
and taking massive risks, so it'd be a matter of
evaluating the conditions on the day.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Do you know the roads there at all?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
No, never done. I've done Pole many times, but only
even as a gravel rally, so I'm never on timing.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
And of course you'll be back off the Bay of
Pretty rally which is coming up this weekend as well,
all on gravel. So you're a busy wee boy, really,
aren't you.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
It's been a pretty hectic year to be fair, so
I thought last year was busy, but she has probably
even top that. But you know, I love it, you know,
I'm so lucky and fortunate. They have so many good
people around us. So you know, obviously I've seen here
in New Zeale and they're very busy. So even when
we're on the other side of the world, they getting
cars ready for our next events in New Zealand and
also for our customers. So yeah, obviously we're in full

(02:55):
swing of the New Zealand Championship at the moment, and
obviously by playing this week him and then the course,
we've got fung Aray the final around in November, so
there's still plenty events. Even after Poland and.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
The Daybreaker rally. You had a comprehensive one there over
six and a half minutes. That was a big one
for you.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Are you had a good rally. You know, the weather
probably played in their hands with their road position and things,
so we made the most of that. But you know,
I think this week is a different ket or fish.
You know, the roads are quite different sort of sort
of flow and nature to them compared to Daybreaker and
also a slightly different surface. So yep, we all start
from scratching on this weekend and you know we're the

(03:32):
ones doing the chasing in the championship, so you know,
we can't afford to be losing any points and we're
just going to keep doing this weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
And a couple of weeks ago you did the Ashley
Forest Rarey Sprint in the car that you won Rally
Argentine were back I think in twenty sixteen, So what
was that like to drive again? Oh?

Speaker 2 (03:50):
It was a very special week, to be honest, from
the time the car turned up on the Monday before
the event, and then of course us doing some preparation
on it, getting it ready and then using it Ashley,
it was. Yeah, it was one of those pinch yourself
moments and the fact that you know, they even realize
that car was back in New Zealand, just the memories
that we're connected with that car and then driving it
again sort of felt like an old glove and saying

(04:11):
that pretty nerve wrecking as well, because he didn't want
to scratch thet damage it and you know, most normal
people would probably put a car like that into a museum,
but you know, for me, you know, you've got to
enjoy it and we want to show people the car
in action. So yeah, pretty pressure to have it here
and hopefully we can do some more stuff with it.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
And Slowan Cox pushed your heart. I mean it was
only points something of a second behind, wasn't he.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah. No, sing always does a good job. You know,
we love the battles that we have a sloan on
these hill Camp events, which is obviously a different sort
of formats and that's what we love about it. You know,
you can bring what you want car wise, you know,
massive power heero. Yeah, that's why we love these sort
of events as well. So yeah, we're looking forward to
more battles with slow and going forward and it certainly
makes it, you know, quite exciting event for fans and

(04:56):
for ourselves.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
I know that w S winning Honda now is on display.
Is it on display? And your workshop in Cromwell?

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, yeah, space down in Cromwell, so yep. Puts the
car cover over it and hopefully not too much dust scattering.
So yeah, we'll get out from tom to time, but
will be quite it'll be quite unique when it does
come out.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
And not only you know, are you driving rally cars?
Last weekend you were at the Real pun A Circuit
in christ Church with a car that your team had built.
But you were the water boy for the driver, weren't you.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah. I had to put myself to you somehow. But yeah,
we've got a few different programs going on within the
circuit racing and the rallying. As a team, we're trying
to grow and we want to you know, we're trying
to do more in the circuit racing side as well
as well as rally So yeah, Pell will ends up
winning the one hour and Duro and the sandow TCR
And we've already got a good group of guys running
that program, so I don't want to come along getting away.

(05:49):
I'll just come along to support and help out where again.
And as it turns out that was doing the water Boys.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah, and a good result for pell On it, so
well done. We wish you the very very best of
luck for Rally Bay of Plenty and then onward to Poland.
So thanks very much Hayden for joining us.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Oh, thanks very much.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
That's Hayden Patten joining me here on the show here
on gold Sport the Country Sport, a brickf
